Hal Newhouser of Detroit lead a solid team performance as the Tigers beat the Tampa Bay Rays 3-1 at Tropicana Field. The result was the expected one but the home fans still went home unhappy with their teams pitching performance.

All of the Detroit Tigers runs came in the top of the third as Scott Kazmir of the Rays lost control. He gave Bill Freehan a single before moving him to second on a wild pitch. He then hit Chet Lemon. Ty Cobb singled to load the bases. Kazmir then gave the Tigers their first run as Freehan came home on another wild pitch. A walk for Harry Heilmann loaded the bases again. Kazmir then gave Norm Cash a walk to bring home Chet Lemon. Ty Cobb was the last to score as he came home after tagging up on a Willie Horton flyout. There was another wild pitch from Kazmir in the inning but no more runs.

The Tampa Bay Rays got one back in the bottom of the sixth as Hal Newhouser was let down by his defenders. Melvin Upton was the one to benefit as he made base due to an error. A Single from Jason Bartlett then saw Melvin Upton move to third before running for home to beat the throw.

The game ended 3-1 in Detroit's favour.

Braves Need Extras to Top Giants

The game turned into a battle of the pitchers as both sides struggled to score. Tim Keefe and Jim Whitney were both at their best as the game went into extras to find a winner. It was the Braves that finally found the spark to take the game as they won the game 2-1 after 10 innings.

The Giants were the first to get on the scoreboard in the bottom of the 2nd. George Davis clipped a lovely double to right centre. This was followed up by Pablo Sandoval who also hit a double to bring home Davis for the first run of the game.

It took until the top of the 6th for the Atlanta Braves to get back on level terms. With 2 out and no one on base Joe Torre stepped up to the plate. He took a ball to assess the situation and then launched one 365 feet to gain his first home run of the year with a solo effort. This tied the game at 1-1.

The game went into extras and the 10th saw the Braves get the winning run. Brian Wilson was pitching for the Giants when he gave Darrell Evans a walk before he ran for second on a ground out from Freddie Freeman. Evans managed to move to third on a single from Sam Wise before running for home to beat the throw and give the lead to the Braves.

The Braves bought in Craig Kimbrell and Tom Hughes to finish the game in the bottom of the 10th.

The Kansas City Monarchs have decided to entrust the opening day game to Bullet Joe Rogan. Rogan has imported from 1925 and had a 129-72 record for the monarchs before today's game.

Even though both pitchers look solid the experts feel the Nationals batting will be far to strong for the Monarchs to handle and are giving the game to them on this basis.

Bullet Rogan proved just how effective he will be in this league as he twirled an excellent performance on the mound for the Monarchs. His efforts along with some solid batting saw the Monarchs blank the Nationals in a 5-0 win.

Up until the 5th inning it looked like the pitchers would dominate the game but the Monarchs bats had something else to say about that. The early part of the bottom of the 5th saw the Monarchs work over Martinez well with singles for Charlie Blackwell, Henry McHenry and Oscar Charleston that saw Blackwell home and McHenry on third and in range. Martinez then loaded the bases by hitting Willie Wells with a pitch. Up stepped Hurley McNair who clipped a couple of foul balls to get his eye in. He then launched one 392 feet for a grand slam and 4 runs to the Monarchs total that got the home fans on their feet with wild celebrations. This ended Martinez's day and gave the Monarchs a 5-0 lead that the Nationals would never challenge.

The game ended 5-0.

Bullet Joe Rogan was in imperious form as he picked up player of the game. His 8.1 innings of work saw him give up only 6 hits and 0 runs while striking out 14 Nationals players. This earned him the win.

Martinez of the Nationals got the loss.

Rogan spoke to the press after the game saying 'If we play like this we can win a lot of games.'

Angels Use Late Game Magic to Beat Twins

Name: Game Scoreline.PNG
Views: 18
Size: 32.3 KB

The Los Angeles Angels left it late but managed to find a way past the Minnesota Twins. In a pitchers game the score line remained low to allow the Angels to come back and take the game 2-1.

With both pitchers on top the fans had to wait until the top of the 5th before they saw a run scored. Bob Allison of the Twins made base with a single. He advanced to second when Cecil Travis was walked. Chuck Knoblauch hit into a fielders choice that sent Allison to third. Allison then came home on a Rod Carew single. This gave the Twins the lead.

The home fans were starting to worry that Walter Johnson was going to keep them out when their team finally found a spark. Doug DeCinces gained a single to get onto base before he then stole second base. Jim Fregosi then hit a solid single to see DeCinces to third before he decided to scamper home, beating the throw.

The Angels finally saw Johnson off in the bottom of the 8th and then used their batting skills against the relief pitching to score the winning run. Lance Parrish made base from a walk from Johnson before he left. Parrish then made it to third on a double by Fred Lynn before deciding to try and make home. He beat the throw to give the Angels the lead 2-1.

The 9th saw the Angels send Francisco Rodriguez in to close the game out which he managed to get the save.

With both line-ups looking solid if not spectacular the experts are having a tough time deciding which to go for. It looks like it could all hinge on 1 spectacular performance or a bad day for someone to determine who wins this game.

Dominant Performance by Johnson in Seattle Win

Size: 36.1 KB

Randy Johnson gave the home fans exactly what they came to see as he pitched an excellent game. He led the Seattle Mariners to a solid 5-1 win as they beat the Chicago White Sox on opening day.

The Mariners took an early lead as they scored the first run of the game in the bottom of the first. Bret Boone got his season going with a solid double to right field. He then moved to third on a fly out from Edgar Martinez before a single from Tom Paciorek bought him home.

The Chicago White Sox got back into the game in the top of the third as Johnson had a rare momentary lapse as he hit both Eddie Collins Sr. and Chet Lemon with a pitch. Dick Allen followed them in and doubled to bring Collins home.

The Mariners took until the 6th to get their batting on track again as Tom Paciorek took advantage of a slip in the field by the White Sox to make base. Leon Roberts followed him up and hit the 1-1 pitch sweetly from the centre of the bat to send the ball 395 feet and bring in a 2 run homer for the Mariners.

The Bottom of the 8th was the game breaking inning as the Mariners finally put enough daylight into the scoreline to take the win. Leon Roberts singled to get on base. Alex Rodriguez then doubled to bring Roberts to third before he decided to go for it and score without a throw being made. Ken Griffey Jr. followed Rodriguez up and placed a well timed single that allowed Rodriguez to round third and make it home.

This gave the game to the Mariners 5-1.

Randy Johnson was voted player of the day as his 8 innings of work saw him give up only 3 hits for 1 earned run. He picked up 12 strike outs along with the win though he did hit 2 batters.

Ed Walsh got the loss on 7.2 innings of 10 hit 3 run ball.

Randy Johnson spoke to the waiting press after the game. He said 'Winning the game is always the first objective.'

The first game of day 2 of the Greats League sees the Chicago Cubs continue their 4 game series at the New York Mets. The first game ended with a New York win 4-2. The Mets will be hoping for more of the same from today's game. The Cubs will be hoping a small improvement will help them to turn that round to a win for them. The Eagle Conference game will take place at 1PM EST at Citi Fields.

Today's game sees the Cubs give Mark Prior his first start of the season. Up to this point the 2003 import of Prior had a record of 6-6 as he is just starting out in his career.

The Mets are giving Tom 'Terrific' Seaver his first start on the mound for the year. The 1971 imported Seaver comes into the game with a record of 75-44.

The Experts felt that the Cubs were stronger with the bat than the Mets yesterday and that opinion has not changed. What they have done is factored in the inexperience of the Cubs pitcher and are now saying that the game is to close to call.

Today will see the 2 teams line-up as follows

Tight Tilt Goes to Mets, 4-3

Name: Game Scoreline.PNG
Views: 13
Size: 29.6 KB

The Experts were right to say the game was to close to call as the Mets won a tight affair 4-3. The difference maker was Tom Seaver as he put his experience to good use on the mound for a solid performance.

The Mets were the first to get on the scoreboard as they scored a single run in the bottom of the 3rd. David Wright took Mark Prior to a full 3-2 count including a couple of extra fouled balls before he found one he liked. He struck the 3-2 pitch sweetly out to left field and the fans cheered it all the way over its 384 feet for Wrights first home run of the season.

The Bottom of the 6th saw the Mets push the game open as Mark Prior finally tired. Howard Johnson singled to get on base. He then stole second and moved to third on a wild pitch before Tim Teufel brought him home on a single. Michael Conforto was up next and he took a strike to settle himself then launched one 389 feet to bring up the Mets second home run of the game and make the scoreline 4-0 as Teufel also came home. Mark Prior saw his game end at that point.

The Cubs finally got into the game in the top of the 8th as a tiring Tom Seaver finally gave them some hope. Bill Dahlen made base on a walk as did Ron Sato. Rick Wilkins then put a single into the outfield that was badly fielded. He ran to second as Dahlen came home to score and Sato moved to third. Rogers Hornsby managed to get the game close as he singled to allow Sato to score. Wilkins moved to third and then ran for home to make it 3 runs for the Cubs. The Mets got out of the inning with Noah Syndergaard taking over the pitching duties.

The Mets closed the game out in the 9th.

Player of the game honours went to Tom Seaver as he pitched an excellent 7.1 innings. He gave up 4 hits and 3 earned runs with 10 strikes and 4 walks during the game. He picked up the win. Armando Benitez got save number 2 of the year for the Mets. Mark Prior's 5.2 innings saw him get the loss.

Seaver spoke to the press after the game and said 'For the most part I made good pitches when I needed to.'

The Mets go to 2-0 while the Cubs fall back to 0-2.

The Tampa Bay Rays have given the ball to Chris Archer for game 2 of their season. Archer is imported from 2015 and his career record up to this point is 20-19.

The Experts are not expecting much from the Rays in the second game as their pitching looks weak. This means the Tigers should be at 2-0 came the end of the game.

Donovan 'Lights Out' in Detroit Win

Bill Donovan put up an excellent display in Detroits 3-0 win over the Tampa Bay Rays. The Tigers were never challenged as the Rays batting was kept out with some fine pitching and defence.

The Tigers got on the board early. Charlie Gehringer led off with a single. Harry Heilmann followed him with another single as Gehringer made it to third. Ty Cobb got the first RBI of the game as he bought Gehringer home on a single. Norm Cash then bought Heilmann home with another single. Archer managed to settle down after this and got out of the inning.

The game went very quiet after that as both pitching units settled into their work. It took until the 9th for the Tigers to confirm the win. Alan Trammell made base with a single. He then went to steal second which caused a fielding error so he moved to third. Chet Lemon then drove him home with a single to bring up the final score of 3-0.

There was only one choice for player of the day as Bill Donovan went 8 innings for 3 hits and 0 runs scored. He had 12 strikeouts and 1 walk. He got given the win.

After the game Donovan spoke to reports saying 'We are in a marathon not a sprint. But I like how we are playing right now.'

The Tigers have moved to 2-0 after this game while the Rays drop to 0-2
