Magpies send Givens to Tallahassee, pick up pitching prospect Alomar

By Maggie Pye | 22 Nov | 2,883 comments

After two-and-a-half excellent seasons, the Magpies have parted company with former Outstanding Pitcher winner Philip Givens. The 29-year-old, who put up a record of 48-17 with an ERA below 2.80 during his time in Des Moines, has been traded to the Tallahassee Islanders. The 2046 SCL champions, who slumped to last place in the South East Division this season, will have Givens pitching out of the #3 spot in the rotation as they look to bounce back and reach the postseason once again.

In return the Magpies received starting pitcher Aurelio Alomar and minor league catcher Juan Rodríguez. The 22-year-old right-hander Alomar was the 29th overall pick in last year’s amateur draft and was named the SCL’s #24 prospect at the start of the season. He has yet to feature in the major leagues, but club scouts seem confident that he is ready for the step up, and is projected to start the year as the Magpies’ #5 starter. He throws a fastball/curveball/splitter combination with good control. His greatest asset is his stamina and reputation from college play as an innings-eater able to go deep into games on a consistent basis. Rodríguez, 28, is a useful hitter but weak behind the plate. If he sees action in the big leagues it is likely to be as a designated hitter.

Magpies GM Billy DePodesta denied the move was solely motivated by financial concerns, saying the move was made to freshen up the roster and bring in younger faces. Behind the scenes, Magpies front office staff say that, while he had a good season, Givens’s velocity had declined the last couple of years and his stats were down on his stand-out 2047 season. They were concerned that he was entering his decline phase and decided to trade him before his value declined too far. Only time will tell whether Alomar represents good value in return for an established and quality major leaguer.

Rich joins Lansing as Magpies continue to cut salary commitments

Posted by Dave Big | Nov 30 | 4:20PM

Lansing and Des Moines today announced a 4-3 trade which saw the Magpies continue to reduce their player payroll for the coming season and the Sharks acquire three players likely to feature on their active roster. In a move that is sure to raise eyebrows among the fanbase, Magpies GM Billy DePodesta sent reliever Don Rich, infielder Felipe Ríos, minor league first baseman Patrick Clayton and veteran minor league starting pitcher Tim Becker to their close divisional rivals. In return, however, the Magpies received infield prospect Reynaldo González, and minor league pitchers Gil Byers and Josh Vogel.

González, 22, is the SCL #60 prospect and projects to develop into a powerful left-handed hitter. He favours third base, but has all the raw skills to play anywhere in the infield and on the left side of the outfield, but lacks experience and know-how in these positions at times. He will begin his Magpies career on the minor league roster and is expected to remain there for the entire 2049 season to continue his development, but club insiders say they expect him to challenge for a spot on the active roster the following year.

In Rich, Lansing have acquired a quality relief arm who will be looking to bounce back from a disappointing 2048 campaign which ended with him on the Magpies’ minor league roster. Rich and, surprisingly, Becker, have both been earmarked by the Sharks for spots in their 2049 bullpen. Ríos is expected to backup several of the infield positions and be a left-handed bat off the bench.
