Busy day for Magpies as Cox signs and Torralda agrees contract extension
Cox expected to provide elite defensive infield backup

By Tim Curtain, 8:39PM, 15 Dec 50

The Des Moines Magpies had two items of good news for their fans today, as they announced the signing of free agent infielder Curt Cox and the agreement of a contract extension with first baseman Gonzalo Torralda.

Torralda, 24, is the latest key young player for the Magpies to agree a deal which will see him avoid the arbitration process at the end of the 2051 season. He established himself as a key part of the Magpies’ offense this campaign, delivering a .737 OPS with 18 home runs, although manager Johannes Kepler has used him almost exclusively against right-handed pitching. The contract is worth $7.5m per year.

Cox, 32, is a 9-year SCL veteran who has previously donned the uniforms of Atlanta, Baton Rouge and Annapolis. He is primarily a defensive specialist, and is equally adept at all the infield positions. But he isn’t hopeless with the bat either, putting up a .673 OPS as a bit-part player for the Mustangs this season. He joins a plethora of major league-standard middle infielders on the Magpies’ minor league roster. Magpies sources tell SCL At-Bat that Cox is likely to see major league action this coming season if the team’s defense falls short of GM Billy DePodesta’s high expectations. He has signed a 1-year deal worth a reported $900,000.

GM’s notebook

- All my planned offseason moves are now completed.
- My coaching staff are reporting concerns that Gianni Hagenaars in CF is struggling at the pate in offseason practice, and are suggesting that is a position that I might wish to upgrade. Other teams clearly think so, too, as I keep getting offered trades for a new CF (all of which I’ve turned down).
- I will be on the lookout for an opportunity to acquire a cheap young CF, but I don’t expect to do any business.
- Our payroll for 2051 is $92.5m. The contract extensions agreed with Gonzalo Torralda, Tom Hart and Jesús Benítez were all below their arbitration estimates, and have effectively largely solved our budget pressure for 2052. Our projection for 2052 is now down to $111m. Robinson Ortíz, Curt Cox and António Fernández all have contracts expiring after the coming season, and not renewing them would get our payroll back below Chris Rueda’s imposed $100m maximum.

Magpies acquire shortstop prospect Hendricks from Sharks

By Maggie Pye | 8 Jan | 12,712 comments

Billy DePodesta has agreed a trade with the Lansing Sharks which has landed the Magpies promising teenage shortstop Shane Hendricks. In exchange, the Sharks have acquired two of the Magpies’ glut of infielders, infielder Juan MacNamara and pacy 21-year-old shortstop Zacharie Garneau.

Hendricks was the Sharks’ first round draft choice in 2049 and was named the SCL’s #80 prospect at the start of last season. He projects to be a good all-round hitter at the plate, with superb speed round the bases. On defense, he specialises at the shortstop position and has exceptional range. He is at least two years away from being ready for the major leagues.

DePodesta has effectively given up two current major league-standard infielders to get Hendricks’s potential. MacNamara, 27, joined the Magpies from Annapolis in November 2045 in DePodesta’s very first trade as general manager. Despite several spells on the team’s 25-man roster over the past three seasons, he never managed to establish himself as a regular player. His talent has never been in question, however, and the perpetually win-now Sharks ar expected to begin the season with installed MacNamara as their everyday SS. Insiders say the deal came about quickly after Lansing contacted the Magpies about MacNamara’s availability, suspecting, correctly, that the earlier signing of free agent infielder Curt Cox had made MacNamara surplus to requirements in Iowa.

Bismarck sign free agent outfielder Limón

Posted by Smokey Appstore | Jan 23 | 8:57AM

It was the news that Magpies fans were dreading, yet at the same time fully expecting. Not only has Enrique Limón’s departure from their team been confirmed today, but he has signed with a direct divisional rival of the Magpies, the Bismarck Coyotes.

The Magpies made no effort to retain Limón this winter, knowing he would attract a salary on the open market far beyond their ability to pay. Although his contract with Bismarck is worth $19m annually, below the $27m salary he began the offseason demanding, it is still for 4 years and worth $76m overall. Fan-favourite Limón was fantastic for the Magpies last season, hitting .300 with 18 HR and 86 RBIs. Bismarck want him to be their starting centre fielder. They finished 3 games outside the Western League wildcard places last year, and getting Limón signals their intent to close that gap and make the playoffs for the first time since back in 2042.

The good news in this for the Magpies is that the team will obtain in compensation the Coyotes’ first round draft pick in June, and an additional pick in the first supplementary round. The Magpies’ already well-stocked farm system will obtain several further top young talents.

Cantrell signs lucrative $104m contract to help Olympia rebuilding project

Posted by Dylan Perspective | Jan 25 | 3:32PM

The Olympia Wolfhounds have today announced the signing of free agent starting pitcher Kevin Cantrell on a 5-year contract worth a reported $104m. Cantrell, who turns 31 next month, previously enjoyed 4 hugely successful seasons with the Des Moines Magpies, leading the team into the postseason in each year, and posting a 52-44 record for the club overall. In his career to date, he has an 85-69 record with a 3.10 ERA. The Wolfhounds are hoping he will retain that level of performance throughout the lifetime of his whopping new contract.

With the worst record in the entire SCL last season (58-104), the Wolfhounds’ first round draft pick in this June’s player draft is protected. In compensation for losing Cantrell, therefore, the Magpies will gain a pick in the first supplementary round and receive Olympia’s third round pick.

Veteran starter Watkins joins Magpies on one-year deal

By Maggie Pye | 13 Feb | 169 comments

The Magpies announced this morning that they have agreed a one-year contract with 29-year-old starting pitcher Pat Watkins, valued at $2.0m. Watkins was the 14th overall pick in the 2039 draft by Santa Fe, and also played for the Montgomery Cruisers. He was a member of the Cruisers’ rotation when they won the SCL Cup Final Series in 2048. He went 10-16 with a 5.37 ERA last season for the Outlaws. Sources familiar with the Magpies’ thinking say that the front office had become concerned about a lack of experienced pitching depth in the organisation, and Watkins on a one-year agreement is an affordable solution to that problem. He will start the year on the Magpies’ minor league roster.

Pre-season preview, part one: Pitchers
Posted by Eleanor Helterskelter, @EllyHS

The Magpies’ league-leading pitching staff were excellent across the board last season. Most of the team are returning for the 2051 campaign, but the departure of free agent Kevin Cantrell is a big loss to the rotation. Cory Adams impressed out of the bullpen and in two or three spot starts, and is tasked with becoming the fifth full-time starter this year. Israel Padilla will be looking to build on a super year, and Robinson Ortíz will want to resume his fine form over the closing stages of the season.

The bullpen is the SCL’s best. Ken James and Jesús Benítez had shockers in the Western League wildcard game defeat, but remain two of the league’s premier relievers. 2049 draftees Walt Davidson and David Gaines both had terrific first seasons in the big leagues. Lefty Marv Lewis, a probable starter in future seasons, is promoted to begin the year in the pen. The organisation has ludicrous levels of pitching depth, with the likes of free agent Pat Watkins, Robert Terry, Robinson Ramírez and Jesús Zamora all candidates to make the roster in the event of injuries.

The Magpies certainly have the pitching to make the playoffs for a sixth consecutive year under GM Billy DePodesta. The big question mark with this roster is over whether the talented offense can score runs consistently enough, as we will discuss in part two of our preview tomorrow.

Pre-season preview, part two: Position players
Posted by Eleanor Helterskelter, @EllyHS

As you would expect on a roster operating under a stringent payroll limit, the Magpies offense is extremely young. At age 29, backup outfielders Terry Lawrence and António Fernández are the veterans on the team.

But there is lots of talent there. Designated hitter Jeffrey White is a 3-time all-star and was the WL Outstanding Hitter award winner in 2047. Enrique Limón has departed as a free agent for division rivals Bismarck but the club’s top position prospect Rob Crawford will step into his shoes at left field. Pedro Soto and Ángel Ochoa will share lead-off duties. Ángel Márquez at third base had a down year last year, but is hyper-talented. And Gonzalo Torralda has matured into a patient hitter and a hard out for the other team to get.

Many Magpies fans are excited to see what newly-promoted and much-hyped infielder Reynaldo González will do in the major leagues. He tore up the minor leagues over the second half of last season, and has won the role as principal backup infielder from Nick Baker. Should González find the step up difficult, there is plenty of quality waiting to take his place, including Baker, Yoshino Kubota and last year’s top draft pick Alex Becker.

Where the lineup struggled last term, and will be looking to improve on this year, is consistency. All too often in 2050 they scored at will when they got on top of the opposition, but failed to produce runs in critical situations in tight games. If they can repeat last year’s level of production, but at a more even pace through the 162-game season, the Magpies will be a contender for a postseason berth despite being in the incredibly strong North Division. Should the Limón-less offense find runs hard to come by, the Magpies’ season will not continue beyond September.

White is top Magpies earner at $16m for 2051 season
Leaked memo shows club’s total player payroll is SCL’s lowest again and is $95m for 2051

By Buster Oldknee, 4:12PM, 23 Mar 51

Designated hitter Jeffrey White is the highest earning player for the Des Moines Magpies this year, pocketing $16m in what is the third year of his current 4-year contract. This was revealed in a leaked internal memo obtained by SCL At-Bat earlier today. The club have not confirmed the accuracy of the memo’s contents, saying that they never comment on allegedly leaked confidential information, but equally have not denied the memo is genuine. The memo also confirmed that the club’s total annualised player paybill for the 2051 season is just under $95m, again the lowest in the entire SCL by a considerable margin.

The memo also confirms the highest earning Magpies players this year are as follows:

DH Jeffrey White - $16.0m
3B Ángel Márquez - $15.0m
RF Pedro Soto - $13.0m
SP Robinson Ortíz - $9.5m
SP Wesley Weaver - $7.5m
C Ernesto Solís - $5.5m
CL Ken James - $4.2m
2B Ángel Ochoa - $4.0m
CF Gianni Hagenaars - $3.7m
LF Terry Lawrence - $2.3m

14 members of the active roster are on the $535,000 SCL salary minimum.

Offseason round-up

Posted by Henry Rubberjohn | Mar 26 | 4:42PM

- The first major trade of the offseason came during the winter meetings, when Lansing traded all-star infielder Roberto Caro to Richmond in exchange for reliever Clifford Long and fringe outfield prospect Kevin Randall. Richmond are the clear winners of that exchange.
- In a curious move, Hartford traded excellent young first baseman Albert Fuentes to Santa Fe, receiving infielder Jacques Tanguay, formerly of Des Moines, and prospect Ismael Martínez in return. Hartford fans are up in arms, as Fuentes was expected to man first base for the team for years to come.
- Jeff Harrington, the 29yo all-star outfielder, was the first big free agent signing of the winter, joining Olympia for a good value $17.7m/yr over 4 years. The Wolfhounds are coming off a disastrous 58-win season and Harrington will significantly improve them.
- The Wolfhounds added to their rebuilding efforts by signing former Magpies starting pitcher Kevin Cantrell on a monster 5-year, $104m deal. Cantrell is an excellent pitcher but Olympia look to have slightly overpaid.
- Trenton signed former Lansing starter Chris Faulkner to a 4-year deal worth just under $20m per annum. Faulkner is a 2-time all-star but his walk rate was up last year and he has a fragile injury reputation, so this could end badly for the Colts.
- Albany put their money behind their push for the playoffs in 2051 by signing former Denver and Des Moines DH Michael O’Quinn to a 4-year deal worth $84m in total. They are gambling on the 32-year-old bouncing back from a below-par 2050 season.
- Former Outstanding Hitter Rich Nelson, 34, signed for Denver for 3 years at $17m per season. This looks like a shrewd move by the Snox Sox, as Nelson remains an extremely productive batter.
- Popular outfielder Enrique Limón signed with the Bismarck Coyotes for 4 years and $76m. This looks a good move for the Coyotes, who are aiming to end an 8-year postseason drought.
- The Sacramento Stingrays came to terms on a deal with veteran starting pitcher Lance Marshall. The $21.5m/yr that the Rays will pay the former all-star over 3 years is a big commitment to a 35-year-old.

From: Achilles Guesswork, Chief Scout
To: Billy DePodesta

Des Moines Magpies Scouting Department
ANNUAL PROSPECT SUMMARY REPORT

The club has placed a record 13 players on Baseball News Network’s Top 100 SCL prospects list, which was published today. Our top ranked prospect is Ricardo Vargas, who is ranked #3 overall and is the highest rated pitcher. The biggest movers on the list are the two infielders we acquired by trade since last year, Pedro Medina and Shane Hendricks, who climbed over 30 places.

This obviously paints an incredibly good picture for the club’s future, especially in these financially stretched times. There are also other prospects who look to me like future major leaguers who do not feature on BNN’s list, including SP Jesús Zamora, MR Octávio Vásquez, LF José Rosas, MR Ronald French and MR Jason Jones.

The full list of 13 Magpies players on BNN’s list are:

#3 - SP Ricardo Vargas (+5)
#25 - SP/MR Marv Lewis (-1)
#41 - 3B Pedro Medina (+35)
#45 - SP Eduardo Castillo (+8)
#48 - SS Shane Hendricks (+32)
#57 - SP Ronald Williams (-8)
#72 - SP Roger Lambert (-17)
#73 - SP Robert Terry (-5)
#74 - 1B Darrel Rogers (+18)
#77 - CF Lance Frazier (+12)
#85 - SP Robinson Ramírez (-6)
#97 - MR Pablo Cruz (new entry)
#100 - C Blair Cunningham (new entry)

GM’s notebook - Series 1 and 2

Olympia 2-4 Magpies
Olympia 1-0 Magpies
Olympia 7-5 Magpies
Magpies 2-3 Sacramento
Magpies 3-5 Sacramento
Magpies 5-4 Sacramento

- Opening Day 2051 was an immediate rematch against Kevin Cantrell. Ángel Ochoa hit a 3-run homer before Cantrell could record an out. Tom Hart controlled the game the rest of the way, finishing 8 IP, 5 H, 2 ER. Rob Crawford was 0-3 on debut.
- Israel Padilla was superb in game two of the Olympia series (7.1 IP, 1 ER, 8 K), but the offense collected just 4 hits all day.
- Jesús Benítez’s first appearance of the season in the Olympia rubber game was not the post-wildcard game bounceback I was hoping for. He gave up 2 runs on 2 hits in 1+ IP, collecting a blown save and the loss in the process. We have to rebuild his confidence.
- Cory Adams’s first start as a full-time member of the rotation wasn’t too good, as he went 5.2 IP for 5 ER. Marv Lewis struck out the side in an inning of relief.
- Benítez got a 4-out save in the 5-4 win over Sacramento to round off the week. Hopefully that will help him a lot.

This week: 2-4
Record: 2-4, =3rd place, 2 GB from Madison

GM’s notebook - Series 3 and 4

Salem 7-3 Magpies
Salem 8-2 Magpies
Salem 2-4 Magpies
Magpies 6-4 St. Paul
Magpies 3-2 St. Paul
Magpies 4-1 St. Paul

- In the opening fixture versus the Ironclads, Jesús Benítez gave up 4 runs in the 8th to break a 3-3 tie and take his second loss of the year already.
- Bernardo Merrado’s first appearance of the season might generously be described as “rusty”: 0.2 IP, 3 H, 4 ER.
- Jeffrey White and Ernesto Solís both hit 2-3 as we salvaged the third game against Salem.
- Madison’s Tony Casas recorded his 250th career win. He’s 7th on the SCL all-time list and the leader among active players.
- The first game against St. Paul was won by Gonzalo Torralda’s 3-run HR in the top of the 9th off the Rockets’ young closer Kas Oskamp.
- Possibly a breakthrough at the plate for José Pereira? He drew 3 walks and smacked the game-winning HR in the 5th in the 3-2 victory in game two of the Rockets series.
- Two great performances from young players saw us complete the sweep. Israel Padilla (8 IP, 2 H, 1 ER, 2 BB, 6 K) was brilliant from the start, and Reynaldo González hit 3-4 with a double.
- The Rockets are not the basket-case team that they were last year, and sweeping them is an excellent result.

This week: 4-2
Record: 6-6, 3rd place, 2 GB from Madison

GM’s notebook - Series 5 and 6

Baton Rouge 10-3 Magpies
Baton Rouge 2-1 Magpies
Baton Rouge 2-5 Magpies
Magpies 10-5 Lansing
Magpies 2-6 Lansing
Magpies 8-3 Lansing

- Madison have agreed a contract extension with superstar hitter Julián Emery which will keep him at the club, and in our division, for three more years. Great...
- In game one versus the Deltas, all their scoring came off Robinson Ortíz and Walt Davidson in the 5th and 9th innings. All our scoring came from Jeffrey White’s 3-run homer in the 4th.
- Literally our entire offense in the final Baton Rouge game came in the first 0.1 IP as we racked up 5 runs off their starter Domingo Aguila. We didn’t have a baserunner the whole rest of the game but it didn’t matter. Cory Adams hurled 8 excellent innings for just 2 runs, and Ken James secured the save, his 5th of the season.
- Gonzalo Torralda (4-6, DBL) starred in the 10-5 win on day one in Lansing. Once the offense saw off ace Carlos Lara in the 6th inning, they destroyed their former team-mates Ben Appel and Jorge Cruz in the Sharks’ bullpen.
- Torralda got 4 more hits in the Sharks rubber game. White smashed a grand slam, and Ortíz had his best start of the year (7.1 IP, 2 ER).
- Our team ERA is 4.08, which is 11th out of 14 teams in the Western League. This is well below the performance level of previous seasons. Both our pitching and our defense have been under par so far.

This week: 3-3
Record: 9-9, 3rd place, 4 GB from Madison

GM’s notebook - Series 7 and 8

Bismarck 2-8 Magpies
Bismarck 5-4 Magpies
Bismarck 1-0 Magpies
Magpies 2-1 Austin
Magpies 6-5 Austin
Magpies 18-7 Austin

- Ángel Márquez led the way in the Bismarck opener, hitting 2-3, HR, DBL, BB.
- It’s been an excellent start to life as a Magpie for Rob Crawford. He hit 2-5 in the 5-4 defeat to the Coyotes to advance his batting average to .302.
- Bismarck won both the second and third games of the series in extra innings. Tom Hart’s 8 scoreless innings in the rubber fixture ended up being for nought.
- Pedro Soto had been batting below the Mendoza line, but 3-5 with his first HR of the year in the opening Austin game will hopefully snap him out of his funk.
- 37-year-old former Magpie Jim Dillman won Eastern League player of the week. He’s still going strong: he’s hitting .427 for Annapolis through the first 22 games.
- Former Magpies closer Júlio Martínez has agreed a 1-year contract extension with current club Albany. After only putting up a 4.12 ERA last year, he’ll earn $4.8m next year, a huge cut on the $13.7m he’s earning this year.
- I’m keeping an eye on Robinson Ortíz. He’s in the last year of his contract (and is our highest earning starting pitcher at $9.5m), but has a disappointing 4.72 FIP after 5 starts, only 2 of which have been QS’s. I need more from an experienced player like him.
- The offense was brilliant in the 18-7 mauling of the Tycoons that completed the sweep. Márquez hit 3-6, 2 HR; Crawford hit 3-5, HR, 2 DBL; Ángel Ochoa hit 4-5, DBL.

This week: 4-2
Record: 13-11, 3rd place, 3 GB from Madison

Traditionally strong bullpen a worry so far for DePodesta
Posted by Shawn Supersonic, @SonicBooooooom

Today, the second league rest day of the season, is usually the time that sample sizes start to take on a little more meaning and player performance can begin to be assessed. That’s not necessarily the case for relief pitchers, of course, but these first 24 games will have caused worry for Magpies GM Billy DePodesta about his bullpen.

During DePodesta’s tenure, pitching, and particularly bullpen pitching, has been a real strength of the major league club. The bullpen has led the Western League in overall ERA in each season. So far in 2051, however, it’s been a different story. The collective ERA is north of 4.40, and two relievers especially have found life tough: Jesús Benítez and Bernardo Merrado.

They are quality pitchers, and the Magpies front office is reported to be confident that both players will turn their season around. There is no question of either pitcher being sent down at this stage. Benítez, so fantastic last season, has been Johannes Kepler’s go-to reliever in non-save situations, but has been punished by opposing hitters. He has continued to strike out plenty, but has gotten hit, and hit hard. His malaise dates back to last season’s wildcard game, and he has clearly not recovered his confidence since. Merrado has only pitched half as many innings as Benítez so far, but has been equally plundered by batters. They are waiting on his fastball and, so far, are not missing out when they do.

It’s not all bad news, though. Closer Ken James has been exceptional. Rhys Nunn and rookie Marv Lewis have also been good so far, albeit from only 3 innings of work apiece. DePodesta will be hoping some of their good form rubs off on Benítez and Merrado.

GM’s notebook - Series 9 and 10

Santa Fe 2-7 Magpies
Santa Fe 2-6 Magpies
Santa Fe 0-7 Magpies
Magpies 0-1 Carson City
Magpies 3-7 Carson City
Magpies 8-1 Carson City

- Some great performances in the home opener against the Outlaws. Rob Crawford hit 3 doubles, Ángel Ochoa hit 4-4, Cory Adams put up a line of 7.1 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 2 BB, 6 K.
- Reynaldo González hit his first major league dinger in the 6-2 triumph in game two. It came during a 5-run 3rd inning.
- For once, we doled out some punishment to Santa Fe’s superstar pitcher Donnie Lee, milking him for 4 runs in the 2nd inning and 3 more in the 6th. Crawford capped a superb series but hitting 2 more doubles. Israel Padilla was awesome, throwing 8 innings of 6-hit ball with no walks.
- Ochoa won Western League player of the week after going 14-21 with 2 HR, 6 RBI and scoring 9 runs. He has a .966 OPS so far.
- Crawford won the award for WL rookie of the month in April. He hit .346 with 2 HR and 17 RBIs.
- A 3-3 day from dependable Jeffrey White couldn’t stop us losing the second game of the Carson City series. Wesley Weaver ran into trouble early on.
- White got 3 more hits, including a pair of doubles, in the final Rattlesnakes game. Rhys Nunn made a spot start and was excellent, throwing 7 inning for just a solitary run.

This week: 4-2
Record: 17-13, 3rd place, 3 GB from Madison
