BSA - Grand Championship Preview

The following preview was written by the BSA team representative.

The BSA has recently completed our 12th in game season and we are just months from our 5th anniversary in real time. We are now on our 4th game engine, 2nd commish and still retain 9 original franchises and owners. The league prides itself on GM activity. 90% of all GM's have their own team-centric Twitter handle, several GM's run blogs to track their Press Releases and even have our podcast that has run over 120 episodes. Our league is set in real life North America with teams from Mexico, Canada and the United States but all of our players are from a fictional universe.

The initial goal for building this team was to have a good contact team with dominant relief pitching. After getting some good base players there, fill in with decent/cheap starting pitching and a couple of power guys. Being at Fenway Park, right handed power is key. Teck, Marshall and Martinez fit this bill. Also, left handed hitter who can shoot the gap helps with the expansive right field. De La Cruz, Davis and Phang can do this. To fill out the lineup, some fast/defensive players are there to provide late defense and pinch running opportunities. And finally, add one guy off the bench who can hit a 9th inning walk off over the Green Monster.

On the pitching side, being in a hitter park necessitates a groundball mentality. All the pitchers throw ground balls here. Hopefully, this limits the home run potential and keeps scores low, where we want them. Having more lefties would have been nice, but given the high price of any viable left handed talent, the decision was made to spend money getting better bats and better relief pitching. There are two lefty relievers, including the closer. A lefty closer can hopefully be a disadvantage to other teams hitting.

Projected starting lineup:

1. SS Ryan Guthrie
2. DH Jason Marshall
3. CF Ken Martínez
4. 2B José De La Cruz
5. 1B Frank Teck
6. RF Tin Phang
7. 3B Bill Davis
8. C Philip Harrison
9. LF Álex Tejada

Projected rotaion:

1. R Andy Goerts
2. R Juan González
3. R Jorge Rosado
4. R Dave Flanagan
5. R Cristóbal Vásquez

Projected middle relief:

R Matt Douglas
R Michael Burns
R Kevin Leonard
R Fred Barr

Projected set up:

L Alex Dias
R Carlos Torres

Closer
L Nathaniel Jensen

Keys to Winning:

1. Back end of the rotation - The last three starters must pull their wait and pitch quality starts. They have had good, young careers to this date, but must continue to dazzle. Control may be a slight issue with some of these guys. Jorge Rosado has some of the nastiest stuff in the league, but must keep his walks down. If he can develop his control a but more, he could be a top line starter. Cristóbal Vásquez still has some time to fix his control as well.

2. Relief pitching - On paper, the relief staff is down right nasty. A main goal of building this team was to get guys who can just finish the game and hold leads. Nathaniel Jensen is a young phenom who hopefully has what it takes to be closer. He is given the role to start the season, but Dias or Torres could step in with proven closer ability should he fail.

3. Lack of lefties doesn't hurt - There are only two lefties on the staff. Having a lefty closer may be a nice advantage after seeing the ball come in from the right all game. A lack of a lefty starter is slightly concerning, but hopefully this doesn't become a problem.

4. Play small ball - This team is full of players who can get on base. They won't hit the most home runs in the league, but should be able to be a top run scoring team by getting on base and moving guys around the bases. If the team struggles to get base hits, this may be a long season.

5. Get the early lead - With a strong relief staff, getting an early lead could vastly increase this team's chances of winning. Off the bench, look for Torres, Hurst and Tejada to be defensive replacements in a close game.

6. Keep doing what they are doing - If everyone keeps playing like they have been for the past few years, the BSA Stars are going to be a top team in the league.
