06/16/1981 - Braves Trip Mets in Extras

The Braves grabbed a win, 4-3, at Shea Stadium, overcoming a fine effort from New York pitcher Pete Falcone. Falcone went 8.1 innings and allowed 3 earned runs. The winner was Al Hrabosky in relief. His record improves to 2-2. Dyar Miller took the loss. The last-place Braves are now 26-35, the Mets 28-32.

The most important at-bat for Atlanta came in the top of the 14th inning. With two out, Chris Chambliss reached on an error by the 3B, driving in 1 run, putting Atlanta up, 4-3.

"It was terrific getting this win," Chambliss said. "We put in a lot of work to do it."

06/20/1981 - Kingman, Mets Beat Braves, 12-4

The New York Mets defeated the Atlanta Braves, 12-4, in NL action at Atlanta-Fulton County Stadium. Dave Kingman received player of the game honors. The 11-year veteran went 3-5 with a home run, 2 singles, and a walk, while adding 4 RBI and scoring once. At 29-35, the Mets are currently last in the NL East Division.

Ron Hodges aided the New York cause with a run-scoring double in the top of the seventh. For the game, the catcher was 3 for 6 with a double and 2 singles.

"We maximized our offense today," said New York skipper . "That makes everyone's life easier."

06/25/1981 - Expos Get Close Win Over Mets

The Montreal Expos scored a 3-2 win versus the New York Mets at Stade Olympique. Montreal pitcher Charlie Lea nabbed top player honors in the tight contest. The winning streak has now reached 5 games for Montreal.

Had Gary Carter not delivered a key base hit in the bottom of the eighth, the outcome might have been different. Instead, with two down and runners on 1st and 2nd, Carter hit a 2-run double. That made the score 3-1, in favor of the Expos.

The St. Louis Cardinals defeated the New York Mets, 7-3. Earning player of the game honors was shortstop Garry Templeton, who went 3-5 with 3 singles. He drove in 2 runs and scored once. Joaquin Andujar earned the win for St. Louis. He lasted 8 innings, allowing 3 earned runs on 10 hits, while striking out 1. With the win, he raised his record to 2-2. Bruce Sutter was credited with the save. He has now successfully converted 13 of 15 save opportunities.

Sixto Lezcano, who is tied for 9th in the NL in RBI with 38, chipped in for St. Louis with a 2-run home run in the top of the first. For the game, the right fielder had 2 hits in 5 at-bats with 1 home run, 1 single, 1 run scored, and 3 RBI.

07/01/1981 - Falcone Toys with Chicago

Pete Falcone put a hex on the Chicago Cubs in a sparkling 2-0 shutout performance, mesmerizing them on a 3-hit gem.

"I felt good physically," he said after the game. "Everything's comfortable. You should pitch well when that's the case."

The Cubs were anything but comfortable against the 27-year-old New York Mets hurler, who fanned 10 and gave up 2 walks.

"Falcone used his changeup very well, very effectively," said opposing manager . "He threw it in hitter's counts."

This year Falcone has compiled a 4-5 record with a 3.88 ERA in 16 starts.

07/03/1981 - Mets Fall Short, 5-4, at Pittsburgh

The Pittsburgh Pirates picked up a win at Three Rivers Stadium, knocking off the New York Mets, 5-4. On the mound for Pittsburgh was right-hander Pascual Perez, who played a pivotal role in the win. Perez picked up the win for Pittsburgh, going 8 innings. He gave up 3 runs on 8 hits. He now sports a record of 8-2. The Pirates bumped their record to 38-35 with this latest triumph.

The Pirates got a big at-bat from third baseman Bill Madlock. For the game, Madlock was 1 for 3 with a double and a walk. He drove in 3 runs. In the bottom of the second, with the bases loaded, he stroked a bases-clearing double. His 11th double of the season gave Pittsburgh a 5-3 lead.

07/05/1981 - Victory Pushes Pirates Record to 40-35

New York first baseman Dave Kingman had a terrific game, but it still wasn't enough to get his team a win. Kingman was 2-5 with a home run and a double, while scoring 2 runs and driving in 5, even as Pittsburgh beat the Mets, 11-7. Kingman was named the player of the game despite the loss. John Candelaria got credit for the win, improving to 7-4. He allowed 4 runs on 6 hits in 5 innings. Pittsburgh now has a 3-game win streak.

Omar Moreno, who is tied for 4th in the NL in runs scored with 50, aided the Pittsburgh cause with a 2-run double in the bottom of the second. For the game, the center fielder went 3-5 with a double and 2 singles, while scoring 3 runs and driving in 2.

"We came out aggressive," said Pirates manager . "We came out swinging the bats."

07/10/1981 - Kingman Gets 400th Home Run

New York first baseman Dave Kingman pounded a home run during the Mets 3-2 loss to Philadelphia yesterday. Despite the defeat, the long ball was a significant achievement and raised his career home run total to 400.

"Some hitters never live up to the hype," said his manager. "Dave has definitely lived up to his. He's hammered the heck out of the ball year after year."

The New York star went 1 hit for 4 at-bats during the game, scoring 1 run and had 1 run batted in.

Lifetime Kingman has played in 1534 games, batted .247 with 400 home runs and 1446 base hits.

Both teams had their chances, but the New York Mets eventually prevailed at Veterans Stadium.

The New York Mets defeated the Philadelphia Phillies, 7-6, at Veterans Stadium today. Leading the charge for New York was first baseman Dave Kingman. He went 3-4 with a home run, 2 singles, a walk, and was hit by a pitch, while scoring 2 runs and driving in 3. Dyar Miller picked up the win in relief, improving his record to 2-1. Mark W Davis was tagged with the loss.

Lee Mazzilli had a nice at-bat for the Mets with no one out in the top of the 13th. With the bases empty, the center fielder drew a walk, which would prove important in the New York win.

"This kind of game is tough on the heart," said winning manager.

The Los Angeles Dodgers bested the New York Mets, 7-6, at Dodger Stadium. Dusty Baker was named player of the game. He went 3 for 4 with a home run and 2 singles. He scored 2 runs and drove in 3. Bob Welch got credit for the win, improving to 8-8. He allowed 4 runs on 3 hits in 6 innings. Steve Howe converted his 23rd save in 29 tries.

The Pittsburgh Pirates bested the New York Mets by a score of 6-4, with shortstop Vance Law getting the main credit. On the day, Law went 2-3 with 2 home runs and 2 walks. He drove in 4 runs and scored twice for the Pirates. The Pirates bumped their record to 57-50 with this latest triumph.

Law had a game-changing home run in the top of the tenth. On a 0-2 curveball from Terry Leach, he banged a 3-run home run to right, giving the Pirates a 6-3 lead. It was the 6th home run of the year for Law.

"We'll grab a cold one tonight and go after another win tomorrow," Law said.

The New York Mets went down to defeat to Larry Christenson and his Philadelphia teammates. The final score was 4-1 in favor of the Phillies. Warren Brusstar converted his 6th save in 6 tries. The Phillies bumped their record to 59-56 with this latest triumph.

A defensive lapse proved costly in the contest. In the top of the sixth, with Philadelphia trailing 1-0, John Vukovich was at the plate when Philadelphia scored 2 on an error. The miscue enabled the Phillies to go in front, 2-1.
