1895 SOUTHERN ASSOCIATION

Teams:

Atlanta Crackers
Chattanooga Warriors
Evansville Black Birds
Little Rock Travelers
Memphis Lambs/Giants
Montgomery Grays
Nashville Seraphs
New Orleans Pelicans

Chattanooga dropped out mid-season and was replaced by the Mobile Bluebirds

Schedule Characteristics:

SCHEDULE type="ILN_BGY_G108_T8_C_" inter_league="0" balanced_games="1" games_per_team="108" start_month="4" start_day="25" start_day_of_week="5"

Teams play 108 games. Teams play each other either 12 or 20 times.

Season starts on April 25 and ends on September 2. Weekday games start at 3:00. Weekend and holiday games start at 1:00. July 4 double-headers start at noon and 3:00.

The published schedules in both The Sporting News and Sporting Life have Evansville playing a home game on Sunday, June 23 and Little Rock and New Orleans playing Sunday home games on September 1. That seemed implausible to me, as those are the only Sunday games on the schedule and Sunday ball was prohibited in most southern states until much later. Both papers, however, reported Evansville (and New Orleans) playing home games on June 23 (by the end of the season, it was evident that the schedule had been rewritten, so the accuracy of the scheduled September 1 dates can't be verified). As a result, I didn't move the Sunday games.

Southern Association 1895.lsdl

This is another schedule where teams in unofficial "divisions" play each other more often than teams in the other "division." So I went ahead and made a divisional schedule with the following characteristics:

SCHEDULE type="ILN_BGN_G108_SL1_D1_T4_D2_T4_C_" inter_league="0" balanced_games="0" games_per_team="108" start_month="4" start_day="25" start_day_of_week="5"

Atlanta, Chattanooga, Evansville, and Nashville are in the Eastern Division. Little Rock, Memphis, Montgomery, and New Orleans are in the Western Division. Teams play divisional rivals 20 times and teams in the other division 12 times.

Southern Association 1895 (mod div).lsdl

NOTE: in order to load the modified schedule correctly, you'll need to uncheck the "Hold All-Star Game" box on the League Options page. Also, this is an unbalanced schedule, so make sure the "Use Balanced Schedule Format" box on that page is also unchecked.

Would anyone happen to have a 1981 American Association schedule? Any format would do, doesn't have to be an OOTP schedule.

Thanks

I have one in OOTP format. Give me a bit to find it and I will post it here.

This has not been used yet by me but I assume it works, if not I will look at it to make sure it will work.

Minor League Schedules

I have converted 81 schedules from text format to OOTP format. These are from the Le Grande Orange collection posted on this thread. I am working on AA, IL and PCL sets now and will post them. After I complete these files I would happily do more if LGO posts more schedules in text format. The last three sets are large (181 total files) but I will get them done as soon as possible. I am replaying the 1920-1939 AA in another game and used these files for my replay.

EDIT: Update 1- American Association schedules(25) 1960-1997 uploaded 1-8-2018

Sorry about the delay

I have been a bit busy and have not worked on the PCL files 1977-2004 yet. I started working on them tonight and I noticed that I did not have any of the files for 2005-present. I have OOTP18 and only current files are in it. I called the guy that talked me into buying this great game and he says his version (ootp14) has the older schedules. He sent them to me and I would like share them in case others do not have the older version of the game and would like to play minor leagues in a historical league.

There are a total of 206 schedules in the zip files. With these added the pcl, and il will have schedules 1977-present when I complete the pcl 1977-2004 (up to 1986 now). I did not check the lower leagues but they will have at least 2005 to present.

When done with the 77-pres pcl I will only have 54 older pcl season and 39 international league and all of the 93 are in a format in excel that can be converted (takes about 20 minutes per file). These will be uploaded when done.

When I started converting LeGrande Orange files there were a little over 240 files in this thread, the modern OOTP will add 206 and I will have converted another 230. This will bring the total to 676 schedules and I have it down pretty much where it does not take much time to convert and if LeGrande Orange posts more text files I will convert them to them to lsdl files.

Outlaw Jim: Thanks so much for doing this. I am eager to enter all of your schedules in the master list, but I still need you to provide the basic information for each of the schedules:
  • League name
  • Year
  • Number of divisions and teams
  • Number of games

I don't have every minor league schedule, but I do have a lot of them, either as originally published in chart form (paper or PDF) or as text files with the dates in a chronological list (which makes it easier to convert to OOTP's format).

For those interested, I also have as played minor league schedules covering the last four seasons (a result of a research project in which I have been engaged).

I am very interested in getting some of these from you - if possible grouped by league. I would like to build a full history of some of these seasons with your schedules and the data that I find at BR and other sources in a gaming sense.

If you do post some of your schedules in the text format I have spreadsheets to do the conversions from text to tables and then I have spreadsheets to convert to lsdl format. I also could do them from paper or pdf because I have a spreadsheet for this purpose also. I enter home team, away and date and then I import into the two processes above. Takes about 10 minutes data entry. I would be interested in helping to give these to the community. There is some manual processes to do this but if I wanted to learn VB or C I could put this into a program possibly. Takes about 20 minutes to convert each file(less if I did not put the BR links and standings into the lsdl file), a program would convert these in about 30 secs.

The one issue I do have concerns about is do many people use these files. I pretty much use them in another game to create homebrews and in OOTP I don't use them to supplement an historical season but to create a standalone season. I hope people use these because I put a bit of an effort in creating the tables and spreadsheets. Also for seasons that I do not have a schedule for I have been researching Baseball-Reference for the games and league setups and I take a different year and sometimes league file and use the files I converted. Not a perfect solution, but it works.

I am sorry this is lengthy, it was just a surprise to see your post. Your schedules really got me hooked on doing research on the older minor league seasons and history - Thank you!!!!

Oh, I am sorry. I just forgot about this. I will get a list for you after I compete the current set of PCL files. Then for each update I will add to the list and send it with the update files I do.

PCL 1977-2004, Schedule Lists

I have the LGO update 3 ready along with the full schedule list of the files in update1-2 and the original LGO upload. Also I am uploading the complete minor leagues supplied with the game (found more files). I am doing this because the files in the past couple of seasons only had 2 years of minors. A friend of mine has purchased many versions of the game and gave me 2005-2015?? schedules. So the new players will not have all the files, so I thought they could also be made available here. The OOTP schedules alone are over 200 schedules.

The only files I have left to do are PCL files 1904-1976 (54 files), excluding the ones already done and IL files 1920-1976 (39 files), excluding the ones already done on the boards here. It may be a short while because I only do them when I can make the time and sometimes life gets in the way....I will create a schedule list with each update I send up.

I sure hope others use these. I actually have used a couple, but I don't use them in historical leagues. I create a stand alone season when using the minor leagues

Let me know what you're looking for and I'll see what I have on hand. If I don't have it, I may know where to find it (i.e. the particular issue of The Sporting News or other publication).

A caution about the schedules, particularly for the older ones: I have not checked them all to ensure the schedules are correct. In the older eras, when league schedules were made by hand, sometimes the schedule maker made mistakes, and these were not caught until after the schedule was agreed upon and published. (The 1920 International League schedule had such an error, but the clubs involved played it the way it was scheduled anyway.)

I have an Excel file as well, though it works manually. First, enter in the number of games for each match-up given on the published schedule chart, and it generates in list form the proper number of rows for each match-up. Then one types in the date of each game for a given match-up. That results in a chronological list by match-up, which can then be easily re-sorted into a chronological list by date.

I have some notes about minor league schedule formats, particularly as it relates to the 1980s through the early 2000s. One thing that might get overlooked is the calendar length of minor league schedules: these used to be very tight (i.e. the length in days was equal to or less than the number of games); in the early 1990s these were loosened to the present 152 days for 140/142/144 games.

I know the feeling.

I've got more things I want to research than I have time to do. My ultimate dream would be to see a Retrosheet-style website for the minor leagues, where one could review the day-by-day standings for each minor league in a given season...

Minor League Schedules

Obviously I have the a good amount of the common league schedules done and I am working on getting the IL and PCL completed. But what I would like to add to the collection here are the leagues no one remembers. I literally spend hours just looking at BB-Ref minor league seasons and it just blows my mind with the number of leagues.

So anytime you have any time or if you have schedules already organized by league. I would like to have schedules that I can put in a pack chronologically. It doesn't matter the league. So many of the leagues that have schedules here are only represented with a few seasons. I guess my mission is to fill in some of the gaps. I played 14 seasons with the AA and although I did not have every schedule I created fictional schedules based on the schedules before the season and after. Randomized the numbers in the schedule. I did annotate in my notes for the seasons that the schedule was not the seasons schedule, but was a schedule that represented how the schedules were done in the era. Not perfect but it works.

So anything you have I will do a bit at a time so that it is no burden on you and it gives me time to complete the schedules I have yet to do. I did take a few months off from doing some of these, but when I do them I can do about 10-12 a day before I need to just step away and do other things. I have 92 left that I am putting into three 31 schedule updates mixing PCL and International League in each update. So I am looking at about 8-11 working days, probably will have these done in about a month.

I just hope people are using these, they are so cool and I use them in a few fictional leagues I have. I like to keep my leagues at about 16-20 teams and I mix schedules for each subleague from different minor leagues schedule. Love playing the AA and when I finish plan on doing the PCL next 1903-1957 in the game as a MLB league competing with the AL/NL and 1920-1939 with the Negro Leagues.

Any how you post I'll do them - little know leagues would be nice if you have schedules. Also I have a friend who played in the Twins organization. Had great numbers, but a bad attitude. I would like to get some schedules from the Midwest League circa 1975-1990 mainly, but any thing 1956-2003 would be cool.

James

?? LeGrande Orange

I was looking ahead to think of what I would be interesting to replay and I think I would like to have schedules for the Southern Association and the Western League. Just looking at BBRef, these leagues would be great to replay. Not really looking for the independent Western League but the league schedules up to 1958, and the Southern Association up to 1961. I was wondering if the game allows for custom databases in the lahman format to be used in a historic replay. If so I will create the database from the stats available. At minimum I would like to see the above leagues along with the PCL, IL and AA at least 1920-1960-ish in a database.

So if you get time can you see if you have any WL and/or SA schedules.

Thank you,

James

LGO Update 4 available

After taking a little time off from processing the minor league schedules from the LeGrande Orange text files I have a new release. The files in this update include the PCL files that I had from 1903-1929 and the IL files from 1920-1929. Not all seasons are included and some of the files are already on the board here.

I have two more updates (64 files) left to do. Then next collection will include the PCL and IL from the 1930-1959 period. The final update collection will feature the PCL and IL from 1960-1976. I do hope some will enjoy this to replay some of the minor league seasons or use these unique schedules in your fictional leagues.

Just to let everyone know, there are gaps in the season schedules for minor league teams prior to 1960 in these collections. Some leagues are not so bad others have larger gaps. If you are playing a season and do not have a schedule, I can create a schedule for you, or you can use a different years schedule. If I create one, it will not have the same matchups that you would have if you used another season. I would just find seasons around the season and determine the # of games and how the schedule is formatted and create one. This is not an issue 1960-present with only a few missing in the higher classification leagues. Again I will not post any fictional leagues here on this thread, and really don't like the option much, but if anyone is replaying history and it isn't here a fictional, but realistic schedule may be an option.
