Why is AI using RP as SP?

This has happened to me twice now where, as far as I can tell, I had a rested and healthy pitcher in the rotation and the AI skipped them and started a reliever in their place. The reliever wasn't even an emergency SP. It was a left specialist with 25 stamina. So we get crushed that game and our bullpen was completely wiped out.

I have it to set to a 5-man rotation strict with occasionally start highest rested.

The strange thing is, as far as I can tell, the next man in the rotation was fully rested so why put in a RP if they were going to skip him?

I've noticed some weird stuff like this too. Because I don't take over a team, it's harder for me to spot, but it is very strange to see Rollie Fingers or Sean Doolittle make multiple starts in a season. Maybe try switching to "start highest rested" and see what happens. That's what I'm thinking of trying for the coming season in my random debut league.

if they aren't recovering in time for their next start, either a pitch count could help OR it may be a result of a setting that doesn't jive your with rotation size.

make sure the ~average stamina guys that don't throw until their arm falls off in previous start is recovering to 94-100% by their next start, if not, it is definitely a settings related thign that you can fix.

stats and ai settings page- - Drop-down box for pitching stamina -- NOT the LTM.

e.g. for modern it's "very low", if i recall... that is a 5-man rotation... 4 days off required to recover.

"Low" = 4.5-man rotation. the "upper" stamina guys, that also don't throw "too many" in last outing will recover with just 3days off, while the lower stamina guys will still require 4 days off between starts no matter what they do in previous outing.

i would guess the next step is perfect for a "4-man" rotation league... and may or may not do the 1/2-man step from there on out, as i've never used those settings.

certain you can get it down to a 3-man rotation via recovery time, if not mistaken. maybe furhter? only ~5 notches for it, eh?

"5" - "4.5" - "4" - "3.5" - "3" ?? very low, low, normal blah blha, blah blah... if 4 options exist, id lop off the 3.5 guess.

Its a 5-man rotation in 1995. Its also an online league so we advance seven days at a time. Unfortunately I cant see what their stamina was but they should have had 4 days off. Sometimes five bc I have had off days.

I changed setting from strict occasional highest rested to just strict. We'll see if somehow he was bumped up for a start but one day later he and the guy behind him were fully rested so its weird.

This should only happen in "strict" rotations when the scheduled starter is not rested, then he will be replaced by a RP who is able to start (in order to preserve the current rotation). On any other setting the game will look for a replacement in the rotation first.

Another possibility is that the AI skips a starter and replaces him with a RP shortly prior to the end of the regular season if the team has already clinched, so that the top of the rotation is rested for the playoffs.

That's pretty clever AI. Hat tip.

Note with that one, sometime in the last year, we did make a change where the AI used to do that automatically all the time if you've clinched, but now will use player strategies to set that up. So, for example, if you are playing as manager or you control your pitching strategies, this will NOT happen automatically. However if you are not in control of your rotation, then your AI manager WILL set the top couple guys in your rotation to bench them at the end of the season if you have clinched.

Do note though that strict rotations need a little more care, since if you screw up the order, we're strict about them So you might see a guy pitch with 60% fatigue.

What is the cutoff to skip the starter? The next day both the scheduled starter and next guy in the rotation were fully rested (100%). It seems unlikely that they were both too tired to pitch. It was once in April and once in May. It was also the 4th and 5th starter in the rotation.

I've seen the AI Dodgers twice make Jensen a starting pitcher. And he was basically incredible. Both in OOTP 19.

This was so annoying. As he was basically unhittable for 4 innings every game.

Maybe the guy came in as a reliever during an extra inning game between starts? Something like that?
