Astros Avoid Sweep, Beat Red Sox

The Houston Astros avoided dropping to 0-3 to start the year, beating the Boston Red Sox 4-3 at Fenway Park last night. Josh Beckett turned in a masterful start for Houston, pitching six innings and allowing just two runs, earning the win. Troy Patton, Ron Davis, and Scott Kazmir all pitched scoreless innings in relief, with Kazmir earning the save.

The Astros jumped out to an early lead in the first when Carl Crawford scored on a RBI single by Anthony Rendon. Rendon scored later in the inning on a sacrifice fly from Tyler Naquin. Houston scored again in the second on a RBI groundout by Chuck Knoblauch.

"Our bats didn't do anything special, but they did enough to win, and that's what matters," Astros manager Larry Dierker said.

The Astros are one the only teams not to homer through the first three games of the season, but Dierker says that isn't reason to worry.

"We're gonna win ballgames with pitching, defense, and speed. I think you saw that today," Dierker said.

Houston was aggressive on the basepaths in the win. Crawford, Naquin, and Jason Bourgeois all recorded steals.

The Astros will head home to Houston to take on the New York Yankees today. Andy Pettitte will pitch for Houston and Marcus Stroman will pitch for New York. The Red Sox will head to Minnesota to take on the 0-3 Twins. Tim Keefe will start for Boston and Ben Hendrickson will start for Minnesota.

Seattle Upsets Baltimore In Extras

The Baltimore Orioles dropped their first game of the season, losing at home to the Seattle Mariners in extra innings. The game was even until the sixth inning, but Seattle scored three runs in the top of the frame to take a 4-1 lead. Baltimore would come back to tie and send it to extra innings, but Ed Kirkpatrick drove in John Olerud on a single to give Seattle a 6-5 lead, which was the final score.

"We've got to pitch better. We can't rely on our bats every game like we have so far," Baltimore manager Cal Ripken Sr. said.

The Orioles lead the American League in Runs Scored (46), .AVG (.448), and .OBP (.489). They're also tied for third in homers with five.

The win improves the Mariners to .500. Evan Meek (1-0, 3.86) earned the win. Zach Davies (1 SV, 3.60) picked up the save. The two teams will return to action today at Camden Yards.

HALE OUTDUELS SAUNDERS, BRAVES WIN

Atlanta Braves starting pitcher David Hale pitched a complete game shutout on Thursday night, lifting the Braves to a 1-0 victory over the Washington Nationals. The win improves Atlanta to 4-1, placing them one game behind the Florida Marlins in the early going of the 2018 season.

Hale allowed six hits and walked one hitter while striking out two batters. His performance was enough to outduel Joe Saunders, who pitched seven innings, allowing one run on three hits and two walks while striking out six.

Atlanta scored the deciding run in the bottom of the 7th inning when Tony Phillips doubled home Luke Appling.

"David threw the ball really well and it feels great that we were able to win this for him," Appling said.

ST. LOUIS DROPS LA

The Los Angeles Dodgers, who look like they will be a powerhouse in The Hometown Project, lost their first game of the 2018 season on Friday night. The 4-2 road loss to the St. Louis Cardinals dropped them to 5-1. Ryan Howard's two-run homer in the third gave the Cardinals the lead, one they wouldn't surrender.

"We play 162 games for a reason. This isn't a sudden death league," Dodgers manager Sparky Anderson said.

The Dodgers took an early lead in the top of the third, but the Cardinals answered right back against Los Angeles starter Walter Johnson, scoring three runs in the bottom half of the frame. Johnson took the loss, pitching 6 1/3 and allowing four runs on nine hits. Max Scherzer got the win for St. Louis, pitching six innings and allowing two runs. David Phelps earned the save, his second of the season.

"We're 2-4, I'm not throwing any parties," Cardinals manager Earl Weaver said.

St. Louis begins a three game set in Santo Domingo later today. The Dodgers will head to Miami to take on the currently undefeated Marlins.

Twins Still Winless, Bullpen At Fault

The Minnesota Twins have fallen to 0-7 and remain the only team in baseball without a win, losing to the New York Yankees 4-3 at Yankee Stadium. The Yankees won on a walk-off single by Carl Yastrzemski.

"It feels good to help our team win. Hopefully we keep doing it," Yastrzemski said.

Reliever Steve Comer picked up the loss for Minnesota. Jack Morris started the game, pitching six innings of scoreless baseball and exiting the game with a 3-0 lead.

"We got to Frankie [Viola] early and that really allowed me to settle in and pitch confidently. It's too bad we weren't able to pull out the win," Morris said.

The Yankees and Twins will square off yet again on Sunday. Chris Reitsma takes the mound for Minnesota, while Eddie Lopat will take the ball for the Yankees.
