William Lindsay

William Hudson "Red" Lindsay was a third baseman with the Philadelphia Bacharch Giants in 1934. The photo is from the seamheads.com website. This player should not be confused with Bill Lindsay (William no-middle-name Lindsay), who was an outfielder-pitcher of the 1909-14 period of the Negro Leagues.

Charles England

Charles England was a pitcher who had a brief stint with the 1946 Newark Eagles. He started two games and lost them both. The photo is from the newly released SABR book on the 1946 Negro League World Series Champions Newark team, THE NEWARK EAGLES TAKE FLIGHT.

Although England's career in the Negro Leagues was fleeting, after baseball he became an honored teacher and coach. Today, there is an intermediate school and a foundation in his name in Lexington, NC. He is also in the Shaw University HOF. He died in 1999.

Vernon Harrison

[ATTACH][ATTACH]This photo (on the left) of Vernon Harrison, like the one of Charles England above, comes from the SABR book,THE NEWARK EAGLES TAKE FLIGHT.

But the case of Vernon Harrison is a puzzling one. He had been on my missing players list as a one-game third baseman with the 1946 Newark Eagles. Despite his being in the book about the 1946 Newark Eagles team, the author of his biography in that book has concluded that he was not associated with Newark that year. The author, Margaret Gripshover, has concluded that the box score showing "Harrison" at 3rd base was published in error, and it should have read "Patterson," meaning Pat Patterson.

But Vernon Harrison had been a pitcher for the Newark Eagles at an earlier time, in 1939, so he was a valid Negro Leagues player.

The photo on the left shows him in his high school uniform. The school was Lincoln High School of Jersey City, NJ. The photo on the right is from seamheads.com. The uniform is unidentified.

Charles Parks

On 12/5/2014, I posted a photo of catcher Charles Parks in a Newark Eagles uniform, but this new SABR book provides us with a much better photo of him. Here it is.
