Lightbulb New historical card category - Unsung Heros! Let's collect them!

OK folks, there was a great suggestion that we add historical cards for players who are not quite as great ratings-wise and who would fit in the 40-60 / 100 range (usually historical cards have a card value of 60+).

Let's call that category "Unsung Heros" and collect the players that would fit in there in the following format:

Lahman player ID, Year, Real name, Position

Let's try to have a 50/50 Hitter/Pitcher split, and maybe focus on players who did something great in the playoffs or had one single great game / performance during the season or some other great feat, but were not that good / well known otherwise.

For example, I was a fan of the Braves in the mid/late 90's and for me a couple of examples would be:

lemkema01,1996, Mark Lemke, 2B
blausje01,1995, Jeff Blauser, SS

If you do not know what the Lahman ID of a player is, simply look him up on baseball-reference.com and check the web address of the player page, for example:
https://www.baseball-reference.com/p...lausje01.shtml
-> The text prior to the ".html" and after the last "/" is the Lahman ID of the player.

Fire away!

Cheers,
Markus

OK, I start...

judenje01, 1995, Jeff Juden, P

Jeff Juden did not have a great career, but on August 25, 1995 he had quite a day. Starting against the Dodgers (who sent Hideo Nomo to the mound), he pitched a complete game and hit a Grand Slam (4th inning, off John Cummings, the only GS Cumming gave up in his career). In that same game, Gregg Jefferies hit for the cycle! On top of that, it was one of the first games I ever saw on TV (back then we only got one live game per week here in Germany), and I think I watched the taped replay about two dozen times...

foggjo01 2007, Josh Fogg, P, Colorado Rockies

Fogg didn't have the best stats in 2007 (10-9 4.94 ERA) but there is no doubt he was a catalyst behind the Rockies 2007 World Series run.
The Dragon Slayer beat some of the best pitchers in the majors in 2007, and was 2-1 in the playoffs.

larsedo01 1956 Don Larsen P

Don Larsen was a career 81-91, but he will always be remembered for his performance on October 8th, 1956 when he threw a perfect game for the New York Yankees against the Brooklyn Dodgers in the World Series.

Here are a few I thought of:

kawasmu01, 2013, Munenori Kawasaki, SS
sojolu01, 2000, Luis Sojo, SS
ellisdo01, 1971, Dock Ellis, SP
merklfr01, 1908, Fred Merkle, 1B
snodgfr01, 1912, Fred Snodgrass, CF
gomesjo01, 2013, Jonny Gomes, LF

It would also probably be appropriate/fun to include all the perfect game pitchers.

wambsbi01, 1921, Bill Wambsganss, 2B

Only unassisted triple play to occur in the World Series. While that happened in 1920, that was actually his worst offensive year (and we are talking about a 78 OPS+ batter here); he was rather decent in '21, should be enough for a 40 card. And I always liked his name.

andinro01, 2011, Robert Andino, 2B

Andino is best known as the man who ended the Orioles run of futility, hitting a walk-off single to knock the Red Sox out of the playoffs and begin the Orioles winning ways. They returned to the playoffs for the first time in 15 years the following season. The stretch from 1998-2011 is sometimes referred to as "The Curse of the Andino".

youngde01, 2014, Delmon Young, DH

In the greatest Orioles moment of the 21st century, Delmon Young hit a 3-RBI double with the bases loaded as a pinch hitter, completing the Orioles' incredible Game 2 comeback against the Tigers in the ALDS.

These two kinda go together

weaveje01, 2006, Jeff Weaver, SP

reyesan01, 2006, Anthony Reyes, SP

They were not very good pitchers in their careers, but they both had stellar postseason starts with the Cardinals in 2006 to win the world series.

ellisdo01, 1970, Dock Ellis, Pitcher. During this season he did ok for a 13-10 record. But, the highlight of his 1970 season was when he threw a no hitter on LSD. I know the MLB doesn't allow this type of stuff but I think its amazing that he was able to get it done.

zumayajo01, 2006, Joel Zumaya, RP

Not entirely sure if he belongs here because he had a pretty good 2006 season. But what comes to mind 1st is game 2 of the 2006 ALDS against the Yankees. Up 4-3 in the 7th the rookie flamethrower comes in and pitches a scoreless 1 and 2/3 innings including strikeouts to Jeter, Giambi, and A-Rod. In the offseason he suffers a bizarre injury and is never the same again.

Some of these responses make me think cards celebrating legendary single game achievements would be interesting "insert" cards to find in packs. New ones could be made as things happen in real life, kind of like how when Bartolo Colon hit his first career homerun, a digital card of the accomplishment became a hot seller for a little while.

grimebu01, 1928, Burleigh Grimes, SP
Last pitcher in MLB to legally throw a spitball. Finished #3 in MVP balloting in '28 leading the league in wins, complete games, and shutouts.

washihe01, 1974, Herb Washington, PR
Got into 105 MLB games with the A's while never batting once, being used exclusively as pinch-runner. (I do not know how well this translates into a simming environment)

Also, somebody's gotta take care of the Metsies, and it might as well be me. Some of them might be a bit far off, but … eh:

venturo01, 1999, Robin Ventura, 3B
Hit the Grand Slam Single in Game 5 of the 1999 NLCS as part of the Mets.

jonescl01, 1969, Cleon Jones, LF
Batter in the "Shoe Polish Incident" in Game 5 of the '69 World Series. Apparently hit in the foot by the Orioles' Dave McNally with a ball that subsequently bounced into the Mets' dugout, Jones was awarded first base when the Mets produced a ball with shoe polish on it to proof it had struck him in the foot. Jones then scored on Donn Clendenon's homer to help the Mets rally from a 3-0 deficit and win the game and the series.

youngan01, 1993, Anthony Young, SP/MR/CL
Lost an MLB record 27 consecutive decisions between 1992 and 1993 while starting, relieving, and even closing for some hopeless Mets teams.

youngjo02, 1982, Joel Youngblood, OF/3B
Only player in MLB history to collect base hits for two different teams in two different cities on the same day, hitting a single against Fergie Jenkins in Chicago before the Mets traded him to the Expos mid-game. Joel rushed to Philly in time to collect a late single off Steve Carlton, like Jenkins a Hall of Famer.

chitiha01, 1962, Harry Chiti, C
First player to be traded for himself when the Mets picked him up from the Indians for a player to be named later, only to send him back a few weeks later to "complete" the deal.

Lifetime backup catcher hit a home run off Andrew Miller in Game 7 of the World Series in the last at-bat of his career, making him the oldest player to hit a home run in World Series history.
