Can a player's morale affect fielding

Playing as the 2019 Cardinals, I have a very unhappy player in shortstop Andrelton Simmons, whom I acquired in an offseason trade with the Angels.
The team is bad, 58-71 in late August, and he started making trade demands in May/June.
His happy/sad faces are all negative accept for role and chemistry. All other traits are normal.
Offensively, he started off poor, batting around, .200 but has picked it up to where he is now hitting .267.
But it's on defense, which is why I acquired him, that I noticed an issue.
He's got an 80 rating with a range of 75 and error rating of 65.
But I see an awful lot of balls that end up being just out of his reach.
For example, recent game against the Cubs it's 3-3 in the eighth inning runners on second and third with two outs and Rizzo up.
Shift is on, he is positioned directly behind second base. Ball is hit straight to him, he doesn't move, ball rolls through him for a single (not an error) that essentially wins the game for Chicago.
Was this a lack of effort because he wants out?
Or just an anomaly as we should not pay all that much attention to how the sim looks. Just the results it spits out.

My instinctual response is to say not to put too much stock in what you see (3D is so very much improved, but still will deceive you on a pretty regular basis) but rather do a deeper look at his fielding stats to see if anything is looking wrong or surprising at this point.
I have no idea about the answer to your overarching question.
But I wouldn't draw too many conclusions from just watching the 3D representation of play during games.

Yeah the animations aren't always synced to the sim. But morale can mess up players especially if you don't have any captains. I would look for a bench captain and drop him on the team.

Team chemistry often forgotten but its a big part of the sim
