Wow, it's hard to grasp that a guy who played with Jimmie Foxx and Lefty Grove would still be alive as of a couple days ago, but there he was. RIP.

I read another obit just now that said Doerr was the "the last surviving major league player from the 1930s, having begun his career with the Red Sox in 1937." The very last one.

Maybe I'm sentimental tonight, or maybe I'm in my own dotage, but this photograph floored me just now. Read the caption.

Freddie Parent, shown in his playing days in the other photo, was born in 1875 and lived until he himself was almost 97. He played in the first World Series in 1903.

Until this past Monday, the lives of these two men who met in Fenway Park that day in 1968 spanned the entire history of Major League Baseball.

Bobby Doerr was the athlete every parent would like their child to be. He was an exceptional human being.

He was a central character in David Halberstam's book The Teammates. Read it if you get a chance, he couldn't have come off like a nicer guy
