Nessim Max Cohen

Moroccan Jew who fought as a middleweight out of France. Born 1941. Fought from 1964 to 1976. Record: 33-9-9 (19).

French middleweight champion, 1971 and 1974-1976. Tko'd in the fourth by Rodrigo Valdez in WBC middleweight title bout in March 1976--Cohen's last fight. It was only the second time that Cohen had been stopped.

Cohen tko'd Jean-Claude Bouttier, gave Willie Monroe and Gratien Tonna their first losses, beat Jacques Kechichian, Jo Gonzales, Mario Almanzo, and Fabio Bettini, and fought Emile Griffith and Eddie Mustafa Muhammad to draws. He lost to Griffith, Bettini, Tony Mundine (in his only other stoppage), and Sammy McSpadden.

Fabio Bettini

Roman middleweight who fought out of France. Born 1938. Fought from 1960 to 1974. Record: 44-30-14 (29).

French middleweight champion, 1971-1974. Outpointed by Tom Bogs in January 1973 bout to fill vacant EBU middleweight title.

A difficult fighter to rate. Bettini was consistently inconsistent. Twice he fought Sugar Robinson to a draw. He beat Nessim Max Cohen (see above) and lost to him; beat Gratien Tonna and lost to him. He held his own with the best middleweights of his day, European and American; until the last fight of his career (a KO at the hands of Tonna), he was knocked out only twice (by Rubin Carter and Bo Hogberg). He was a brawler and a head case, capable of a smashing upset or a crushing defeat.

Bo Hogberg

Swedish junior middleweight. Born 1938. Fought from 1962 to 1973. Record: 36-6-1 (25).

EBU junior middleweight champion, 1966. Tko'd Bruno Visintin in the seventh round on New Year's Day 1966 to capture the crown, then lost it via decision to Yolande Leveque the next month. After Sandro Mazzinghi had taken the belt, Hogberg fought him for it in November 1966, but lost on a TKO in the fourteenth round. Retired after three straight losses.

Manfred Ackers career of futility

Don't know how many of you have run across this guy, but his career is just something to look at. In a 10 year period from 1963 to 73 he fought 72 times winning only 8 fights, loosing 60! How did this guy keep getting fights to continue climbing into the ring! He had only one Knockout, that being by TKO. It came in his 8th and last win in his 65th fight! I kept running across this guy in looking through other european fighters and finally decided I got to rate this guy. Going to do it a little different though. There's actually quite a few of his opponents already rated. Either by myself or others. So, as a continuing contribution to this european fighters venture here, I decided I go through Ackers entire career and rated his opponents who haven't been done it. The guy actually fought some decent, and not so, opponents.

So...first up in Ackers very first fight on May 18th, 1963 was...

Karl-Heinz Troche Rating 1 Germany
Heavyweight 1963-68
7 wins / 10 losses / 0 draws / 2 KO

Birthplace: Eisdorf, Schlesien, Germany

Rating by: Rocco Del SEsto

Troche's career was one of two streaks. He won his first 7 fights, then lost his last 10 fights. Three of the 7 wins were over Manfred Ackers. His first win was over Robert Warmbrunn who was 16-47-3 at the time. The combined records of the other 6 wins were 2-10-1 and most of that was the 3rd meeting with Achers who was 1-7-0 at the time.

AFter the 3rd Ackers win came losses to Lars Olov Norling, Giuseppe Migliari, Ray Cillien, Peter Weiland, Dante Cane, Harry Kneipp, Jo Juvillier, Lothar Stengel, Horst Dreyer and finally Burghard Lembke.

I've not seen and Ackers done by anyone. If there is I missed it somehow. Once all his opponents are rated and actualy quite a few of them are already done, then I'll build his complete career into the scheduler and play test my Ackers rating.

Norman Lewis

This one is for Chris, who likes Welsh boxers. Couldn't find a picture of him, though.

Lewis was a fly and bantamweight. Hometown: Nantymoel, Wales. Height: 5' 3". Born 1923. Fought from 1939 to 1950. Record: 83-25-5 (44).

After making it to the second round of the elimination tournament for the Commonwealth flyweight title, he outgrew the division. In October 1947, Lewis got a shot at the Commonwealth bantamweight title, but was knocked out in fifth by Jackie Paterson.

Manfred Ackers career of futility

After loosing his first two career fights, both 4 round decision to Troche, Ackers squared off for two fights with Adolf Mensinger. Mensinger dispatches Achers for two more losses, these 6 round decisions.

Adolf Mensinger Rating 1 Germany
Heavyweight 1961-64
6 wins / 3 losses / 0 draws / 3 KO

Birthplace: Frankfurt, Germany

Rating by: Rocco Del Sesto

Defeated Robert Warmbrunn twice and Mandred Ackers twice. Lost to Harry Kneipp.

How can you cry through that film clip tribute to Johnny Owen and not like Welsh boxers?

Thanks for all the great ratings David.

And Rocco, will you be rating the guys Ackers beat? It sort of makes me pine for the last version of the board game that had '0' and '-1' ratings.

Manfred Ackers career of futility

After Ackers looses two bouts to Mensinger, he manages to ring up his first victory on March 20th, 1964! Guess who?! Peter Weiland! Weiland is fighting his first pro bout and looses a 4 round decision to Ackers!!

After that it's back to normal for Ackers as he racks up 10 more losses. They are to:
Danillo Zoratti Twice
Roland Graetz
Karl-Heinz Troche
Jurgen Blin(His 2nd career bout)
Buddy Turman
Peter Weiland
Dante Cane
Horst Benedens twice

All these guys are rated, either original in the game or by myself or by David Myers (think did Benedens).

That all happened between May 1964 and March 1965.

Then on April 30, 1965, hold onto your seats, Ackers gets into the win column again!
