Lightbulb Alternate Skin for HiDPI Users

Jeff,

I appreciate the issues with HiDPI screens (Retina etc.) have been discussed previously on here, and whilst you're aware of the issues, adding native support isn't necessarily a high priority, which is understandable since it'd take away resource from fixing bugs and implementing new features etc.

With that in mind, could I recommend an interim fix—would it be possible to provide an alternate skin for FHM4 that's based on the one from FHM3?

The heavy font used in FMH4 has had a somewhat negative effect on legibility, and compounds the issue of lack of support for HiDPI. Let me demonstrate...

Notice how the text in the shot from FHM3 is more legible? The individual characters have more definition to their shape, and therefore appear cleaner and crisper. If you stare, just for a short while at the second shot, you'll actually notice characters bleeding into each other, which is a result of the heavier font with less definition and the brighter white used.

It appears FHM is already set up to support multiple skins—there's a Current Skin option in the Interface settings—and having a poke around in data/skins/default it would appear as though skins are built primarily around the QT CSS file default.qss. I've run a diff against that file from FHM3 and FHM4 and it appears as though the majority of changes are replacing a hardcoded font name with a variable (that I'm hoping it configurable somewhere!) and some font size tweaks.

What do you think—is this something you'd consider?

As a footnote, when I mentioned this to Adam on Discord he mentioned the HiDPI user base is considered to be relatively small, but as I pointed out to him the MacBook has had a Retina screen since 2012, and the iMac since 2014, so the base might actually be bigger than first anticipated.
