Injuries during Spring Training

How come when a minor league "invitee", who isn't on the 40 man roster, gets injured I can't just send him back down to the minors? Why must I put him on the ML disabled list? Is that an actual rule in MLB? Seems like I should be able to just send him back to the minors so that he can be put on the minor league DL by the appropriate manager.

I believe this is because the MiLB DL exists only during the MiLB regular season, which is after ST.

That's fine but I shouldn't be forced to place a guy who isn't on the 40 man roster on to the MLB DL which then puts him on my 40 man roster. I should just be able to demote these guys back to the minors and their manager can put them on the ML DL if needed once their season starts. Instead I now have a guy who is prematurely on my 40 man and will need to have an option used on him when he comes off so I can demote him back to the minors.

If they're not on the 40-man roster, I believe you should be able to demote them. I'm fairly certain I've been able to do that in the past.

Just confirmed this in ST with several players.

I thought I was able to in the past as well but this last time it didn't let me.
