Phillies Win 3-2 Walk Off

It was a long tough game for the Rockies and Phillies as they went 14 innings to decide the game. It was the Phillies who took it in a walk off 3-2 victory in the 14th.

The Colorado Rockies got into the action early as a Triple by DJ LeMahieu put him in scoring range. He made it home after tagging up on a Todd Helton fly out.

It took until the 6th inning for either side to get any more runs as Pete Alexander and Ubaldo Jiminez shut the game down. It was the Phillies that managed to find the break as Jiminez gave Billy Hamilton a walk before Chuck Klein doubled. Hamilton then made home on a tag up from a Sherry McGee fly out to tie the score. Chuck Klein was bought home from second by a Gavvy Cravath double to give the Phillies a 2-1 lead.

A change of pitching in the 8th by the Phillies gave the Rockies their chance to tie the game as Ellis Burke made home plate. Burke was hit by a pitch from Tug McGraw before McGraw then gave a walk to LeMahieu and also hit Todd Helton with a pitch to load the bases. The Phillies quickly pulled McGraw for Robin Roberts but he gave up the one run after Matt Holliday singled to bring Burke home.

Both sides relief pitching then went to work as the bullpens kept the game tied at 2-2 all the way to the 14th where Gavvy Cravath became the hero with a walk off solo home run that went 417 feet to bring the game home for Philadelphia.

Philadelphia Phillies pitcher Pete Alexander was awarded player of the game after his 7 innings of work saw him give up only 4 hits and 1 run and 3 walks. He raised the leagues top strike out count to 13 as he put up an excellent show of control.

John Denny of the Philadelphia Phillies gets the win, Mike Myers of the Rockies the loss and Robin Roberts of the Phillies is given a blown save.

Pete Alexander spoke to reports after the game saying 'It was a solid team effort and we'll try and keep this momentum going.'

The New York Mets took full advantage of a slow start by the Chicago Cubs and made full use of home advantage to bring home the win, 4-2.

The Mets got going in the bottom of the 1st as Cleon Jones made base on an error. John Olerud was next up at the plate and he took a ball and fouled off to then face a 1-1 pitch. He got a pitch he liked and sent it 360 feet for a 2 run homer to put the Mets into the lead 2-0.

The Bottom of the Second saw the Mets extend their lead as Edgardo Alfonzo doubled to get on base and David Wright then bought him home with another Double. The Mets led 3-0 at this point.

Miami Squelch Brewers Offense in Shutout Win

Name: Game Scoreline.PNG
Views: 44
Size: 38.6 KB

The Miami Marlins pitching and defence was in top form for opening day as they stopped any chances that the Brewers had of scoring a run. They combined over the 9 innings to provide the Marlins with a shut out for a 3-0 win.

It took a while for the game to get going as both sides struggled with the bat. The Marlins finally got things going in the top of the 4th. Gary Sheffield was at the plate and facing a 1-2 pitch when he released a screamer out to the right field that went the distance for a solo home run effort of 405 feet. This gave the Marlins a lead they would not relinquish 1-0.

The top of the fifth saw the second Miami run as Marcell Ozuna, Dan Uggla and J T Realmuto all made base before Ozuna came home on a tag up from a Hanley Ramirez fly out to right field.

The top of the sixth saw the end of the run scoring as Giancarlo Stanton made a solo home run effort, from the lead off position, putting the ball over the fence at 397 feet. This gave the Marlins the final score of the game.

There was further bad news during the 4th inning for Brewer Robin Yount. He decided to argue a call a little to much and ended up being ejected from the game.

Name: Josh_Johnson.jpg

Josh Johnson of the Miami Marlins was the star of the game as his 6.1 innings of work cost him only 4 hits and 2 walks while he picked up 11 K's. This earned him player of the game honours along with the game win.

Ben Sheets had the loss for the Brewers while Bryan Harvey of Miami got the save.

The Milwaukee Manager hosted a feisty post match press conference where he was heard to say' We didn't score, that was the problem.'

Cardinals Top Reds Behind Brecheen, 1-0

In a battle of the pitchers the scoreline was always going to be low. That is how this turned out as the Cardinals managed to squeak home by the single run, 1-0, at Busch Stadium. Both pitchers were in amazing form and it was a shame that either one had to be credited with the loss for this outing.

The only run of the game came in the bottom of the 6th as Rogers Hornsby got lucky. Facing the 0-0 pitch first up for the Cardinals he somehow got one he liked and sent the ball flying 386 feet and over the wall for a solo home run.

Name: Harry_Brecheen.jpg

Player of the game was always going to be a pitcher in this low scoring affair. In the end it was given to Harry Brecheen for his outstanding 7.2 innings of work. He gave up 0 runs and only 3 hits on his way to a walk and 11 strike outs.

A notable mention must go to Johnny Vander Meer who also had an outstanding game. He went the full 8 innings the Reds pitched and put up 15 strike outs to now lead the league in strike outs in a single game.

Brecheen got the win, Vander Meer the loss and Silver King was given the Save.

Brecheen spoke to reports after the game saying 'We played hard and one. Sometimes baseball really is that easy.'

Sierra and the Rangers Overpower the Astros 6-3.

The game was won and lost on the ability of one man's bat as Ruben Sierra opened up his account in style with 2 homers to bring home the win for the Rangers. The final score was 6-3 to the Texas Rangers and the home fans were all smiles as they headed home after the game.

The Astros got off to a fast start as they put Nolan Ryan under pressure early. A few singles in the top of the first saw the bases loaded with Lance Berkman, Cesar Cedeno and Richard Hidalgo all on base. The Astros then put pressure on the Rangers defence as Jim Wynn struck a clean single to centre field. Lance Berkman easily scored and then a throwing error by the Rangers allowed Cedeno to follow him home to give the Astros the lead 2-0.

It took until the third for the Rangers to come to the party. Julio Franco singled before scoring on a Josh Hamilton Triple. Hamilton also crossed home plate in the inning after a Mike Napoli ground out to first. This tied the game at 2-2.

The bottom of the fourth is where Ruben Sierra decided to play as he scored the first of his 2 home runs. Juan Gonzalez singled to make base before Sierra came to the plate. Sierra struck the 0-0 pitch sweetly over the right side fence 384 feet to claim a 2 run homer. The Rangers were not finished as Julio Franco made base again with a single. Adrian Beltre promoted him to second on a hit by pitch before another single by Josh Hamilton saw Franco scamper home for the Rangers 5th run of the game and 3rd of the inning. They now led 5-2.

The top of the sixth saw the Astros try to rally as Jim Wynn struck a single. He moved to second on a Morgan Ensberg ground out before making it home on a Jason Castro single that reduced the Rangers lead to 5-3.

Ruben Sierra was up first for the Rangers in the bottom of the sixth and he took Turk Farrell to a full count before he saw one he liked and struck a solid blow that sent the ball 392 feet across the same right fence as before for his second homer of the game for a solo run to give the Rangers a 6-3 lead.

The Relief pitching shut things down after that to end the game.

Grove Spins 17 K Game

Name: Game Scoreline.PNG
Views: 42
Size: 38.9 KB

The game between the Black Barons and the Oakland Athletics went exactly the way everyone expected as Lefty Grove pitched a masterclass in how to beat a weak opponent. The Athletics took the win 14-0 and were never threatened in the game.

The only surprise for fans watching the game was that it took until the bottom of the 3rd before the Athletics had Bill Holland worked out. Dave Henderson, Eddie Cochrane and Eddie Joost all made base to load the bases before Henderson was bought home by a Eddie Collins single. The bases remained loaded as Frank Baker came to the plate. He took a strike before he got one he liked and launched the ball 371 feet to bring home the leagues first grand slam of the season. Nap Lajoie made base and was then promoted to 3rd as Holland walked both Reggie Jackson and Rickey Henderson to load the bases for the second time in the inning. That was all Holland was allowed to do as he got pulled for Joe Williams. It didn't help as Lajoie scored on a Jason Giambi single and Reggie Jackson came home on a Dave Henderson ground out. The Athletics took a 7-0 lead at this point.

The 5th inning turned into another big one for the Athletics as Nap Lajoie scored a second run after the Athletics loaded the bases again. He came home on a Mickey Cochrane walk. Reggie Jackson and Rickey Henderson came home on a Eddie Joost single. Cochrane got home on an Eddie Collins double and Joost then scored on a Frank Baker single. This took the Athletics lead up to 12-0.

The final runs came in the bottom of the 6th as the Athletics saw Nap Lajoie scored a third run after he hit a triple to get in range. Rickey Henderson bought him home on a single. Henderson himself then scored from a Mickey Cochrane single.

The Black Barons had further bad news after the game as it was confirmed that an injury to Joe Williams will mean he is DTD for the next 5 days with a mild oblique strain picked up during the 4th inning.

The 5th inning saw a 42 minute rain delay.

Lefty Grove pitched 7 wonderful innings as he struck out 17 Black Barons, giving up only 3 hits for 0 runs. This earned him the player of the game award.

Bill Holland got the first of what will likely be many losses if the Black Barons do not improve quickly.

Padres Roll Over Pirates 12-3.

The Experts did not call this correctly as the Padres beat the Pittsburgh Pirates 12-3. Both starting pitchers struggled in the early going and the result came down to which bullpen fared better against the opposition batting.

The Padres took an early lead as Tony Gwynn came home in the bottom of the first on a single from Cito Gaston after he himself had singled to get on base.

The Padres extended this early lead in the bottom of the second as Jack Clark scored after some good team batting and Everth Cabrera came home on a Tony Gwynn Double.

The Pittsburgh Pirates finally got into the game in the top of the third as Russell Martin singled before Barry Bonds struck a sweet 407 foot home run to score 2. This left the lead 3-2 in the Padres favour.

The top of the fourth saw the Pirates get on level terms as a triple by Richie Hebner and a double by Neil Walker saw Hebner crossing home plate.

This didn't last long as Blanton finally fell apart in the bottom of the 4th. Jack Clark singled and Randy Read doubled to put 2 men in scoring position for the Padres and end Blanton's afternoon. The relief pitching of Howie Camnitz did not work for the Pirates as he hit Gene Tenace up first to load the bases before a walk for Everth Cabrera scored Jack Clark. Tony Gwynn then put up a double to score Randy Read and Gene Tenace. A Mark Loretta flyout saw Everth Cabrera tag up and then run for home. Tony Gwynn finished the scoring as he came home on a Gary Sheffield single.

The fifth saw the Padres bring home another run as Cito Gaston came home on a Sacrificial fly by Gene Tenace.

The Padres rounded out an excellent day with the bat in the 7th as Jack Clark and Randy Read made base before Gene Tenace stepped up and blasted one 412 feet for a 3 run homer.

The game ended 12-3 in the Padres favour.

Gene Tenace was voted the player of the game after he went 1-2 with 4 RBI's and 2 runs to his credit including his first homer of the season.

Chris Young of the padres picked up the win in a relief appearance while Cy Blanton got the loss.

The Los Angeles Dodgers put up a solid performance with the bat to beat the Arizona Diamondbacks at Dodger Stadium. The home fans went home happy after the 8-4 opening day victory.

The Dodgers got off to a quick start as Randy Johnson failed to settle in the bottom of the first. Babe Herman and Mike Piazza both made base with a single before being driven home on a single by Duke Snider.

The top of the third saw the Diamondbacks bounce back with a couple of runs of their own. Chris Iannetta put up a double and moved to third on a Matt Williams single. Paul Goldschmidt then showed why he is the star of the team as he hit a 3-1 ball 375 feet for his first home run of the year. This led Iannetta and Williams home for 3 runs.

The top of the fourth saw the Diamondbacks extend their lead with solo home run from Jean Segura that went 392 feet.

The Dodgers bounced straight back in the bottom of the fourth as they showed that they could also hit homers. Justin Turner singled before Jackie Robinson came to the plate. Robinson took 1 strike to steady himself before launching one 369 feet to bring in 2 runs with Turner crossing home plate. A further single by Pee Wee Reese saw Randy Johnson's game end.

The Dodger took the lead of the game back as they worked over Wade Miley of the Diamondbacks in the bottom of the fifth. Singles from Mike Piazza and Harry Lumley saw Piazza to third. Piazza then scored on a Pedro Guerrero ground out double play. Snider made base with a single and then stole second before moving to third on a Justin Turner single. Snider then made a dash for home and was easily in to score the second run of the inning.

The bottom of the sixth saw the final scoring as the Dodgers added a further 2 runs to their total. JJ Putz of the Diamondbacks came in as pitcher but got the same treatment as Miley and Johnson as Pee Wee Reese singled. Putz then hit Babe Herman with a pitch before a double by Harry Lumley saw both Reese and Herman home.

The Orioles have decided to match youth with youth as they bring Jack Kramer in to pitch the opening day game. Kramer has imported in from 1944 and has a record of 16-26 before today's game.

With 2 young starters on the mound the experts had a little difficulty working out who to go for. In the end they decided on Baltimore due to home field advantage and better batting stats.

Here are the starting line ups for the game.

Zack Greinke and the Kansas City Royals had an outstanding game on opening day. They sent the fans of the Baltimore Orioles home with sad faces as they convincingly beat them 6-0 in Baltimore.

The Royals got off to a solid start in the top of the first as Hal McRae was walked before a double by George Brett bought him home.

The top of the third saw the Royals extend their lead to 3-0 with some solid hitting. Carlos Beltran made base with a single. He then moved to third on a Hal McRae single. George Brett then added to his RBI tally with another double that saw both Beltran and McRae home.

The Royals had to wait until the top of the 6th for their next run. Kramer was replaced by Gregg Olson on the mound for the Orioles. This just helped the Royals as Amos Otis thumped Olson's first pitch 466 feet to record his first home run of the season.

The top of the eighth saw the final runs for the Royals as they took it to another Orioles pitcher. Darrell Porter was the first onto base as Jack Powell walked him. He then made third from a Mike Aviles single. Frank White bought Porter home with a single that moved Aviles to third. Aviles then scored the Royals last run as Hal McRae singled.

The game finished with the Royals scoring 6 unanswered runs and a 6-0 scoreline.

This is a great dynasty idea! I was planning to begin a dynasty thread based om my fictional United Baseball League, but it is somewhat similar to your league so I will choose another of the various fictional leagues that I have..

The league I was going to write about begins in 1946 and includes integrated MLB and integrated Negro League teams.

But I will follow your thread instead.

The Detroit Tigers are giving youth a chance on opening day as they pass the ball to Hal 'Prince Hal' Newhouser. Hal Newhouser has imported from 1946 and has a record of 88-70 for the Tigers up to this point.

The Tampa Bay Rays have also gone for youth on the mound for opening day as they opt for Scott Kazmir. Kazmir has only 3 years for Tampa so far and has a record of 22-20 after his 2007 import.

The Experts are all in agreement that the Detroit Tigers should be able to overcome the home field advantage of the Tampa Bay Rays and win the game.

Today's starting line ups look like this
