Any opinions on Keith Law's book on baseball stats?

I think the book is called "Smart Baseball." Has anyone out there read it?

I read the sample and didn't feel it was worth buying, personally.

Hmmm. Just wondering. I know it got some good reviews and wondered if it would be worth buying.

After I wrote the above I did a search and discovered that my nearby library has it. Maybe I will borrow it.

I bought the hard cover version of the book. I buy a lot of baseball books so even if I felt it was not great I would have still bought it. With that said, it is a good read but most of the topics have been covered over the years by Bill James, John Thorn, Pete Palmer, Tom Tango and all the good people at SABR, plus many others.

I did enjoy it, but it was kind of like buying a mystery novel and knowing the butler did it. Not much new, just a modern twist. Keith Law is a good writer and the book is very easy to read and understand. Would I buy this book again? Yes. I collect books. Is this one of my top 50? No.

I stopped paying attention to Keith Law in 2006, when he picked the Cardinals to lose on every series that fall. All of them. He let his personal bias get in the way, which is pretty ignorant for a baseball guy.

This is my take as well. I am about half-way through and I like it. Although most of it has been covered, it's a good overview and he is a good writer.
