Ping: Spritze or Gambo

I love the Gambo/Spritze database. I also love tinkering with the Gambo/Spritze database. If one wished to tinker with a database, the correct procedure in previous years was to remove the historicaldatabase.odb file from the database so as not to overwrite one's tinkerings and use the remaining Master.csv file. This year, it would appear that is not possible, as the game simply refuses to import the Master.csv file unless the historicaldatabase.odb file is still present. This has rendered tinkering (even with the two databases that ship with the game) unpossible. I am using the GSOOTP12 database and it does import correctly when imported in its original form, but I can't figure out how to get it to import the way I want it to. Am I missing something or am I S.O.L. in terms of playing the game the way I want to this year?

Looks like the latest version requires the odb file.

That is a less than optimal situation for tinkerers and tinkering in general.

Not very happy at all.

I tinker therefore I am.

Thanks Spritze. Any idea as to why that might be? Perhaps the database has become a little too large and cumbersome with all the recent additions to it. Whatever the case may be, it cannot import a thing before it gives up and says: "Error, database failed to import". Maybe Markus knows what's up and can look at it when he gets back from his much deserved vacation. Until then it's back to pristine, unfettered databases for me I guess.

Ya know....the new random feature needs to read the entire db and that is what the ODB was developed for so I betcha by golly that may be why it is now required.

D'oh! You're probably right. That would make the new random feature both a blessing and a curse from this perspective. It's great to see the random historical players getting what they want, but it would be a shame if this is the price that had to be paid to get it.

All right, well, to whom can I send my csv files over at OOTP to create an .odb file for me?

Or just post the instructions on how to create it ourselves. I have both MSOffice 2010 and Open Office 3.3 installed on my computer so I'm ready to go.

It is not a database file of any sort so those helpful items installed on your computer are not as helpful as one might assume. It is a special secret OOTP file consisting of special secret squirrel sauce that no one knows the recipe for except that Markus fella.

Yes, I know.

But it should be that easy.

Let's hope Markus will either put the special secret squirrel sauce to work one way or another or make one of those tiny little adjustments that would allow for the absence of an odb file, and not deprive us historical simmers who like the tinkerings of an external db...

I imagine you could create a squirrely historical database the same way; just replace any of the needed csv files with the ones you want to use and run the "create historical_database.odb" utility.

The key is having the developer tools enabled, something that's not well documented and which I can't explain very easily. Perhaps Spritze can help with this.
I hope he can because I haven't the foggiest idea how to do what you're saying it's possible to do. That's probably on me because I'm not too computer smart. The sticking point about the historical database is that it's a snapshot of everyone of the csv files all in one super humongous file, and that's why it enables the database to import so swiftly.

Has anyone submitted an official ticket for this yet?

Maybe we all should.

I may eventually, but for now I've gone back to OOTP11 in order to enjoy playing the game again, and temporarily avoid the frustration that has been OOTP12 and OOTP13. It's been a frustrating two releases for me with my 1878 draft issue and now this not being able to mod the database for a historical game. Once I get back in the groove and my frustration's down to a manageable level, I can see myself dealing with it, but right now, I just wanna play and not deal with this crap. Childish? Perhaps, but if 11 works for me, I'll go with it for now.

This has been ticketed

AND

Markus promised to create REAL HISTORICAL 19th Century Play which if done would make much (but not all) of the futzing around currently unavoidable avoidable.

Might do the same. Where can I get V11? (JK, I know where to go.)

All I want is to start a 1973 season, using my modified Spritze HS DB, and without seeing 1,900 minor league players angry. I don't think that's asking too much.
