Orcin's Brave New World

Introduction

After the 2019 season, I resigned as President & General Manager of the Louisville Colonels in the Continental Baseball Association. Technically, my contract was not renewed, but there is no reason to quibble over semantics.

I needed some time to decompress and, in late December, there were no GM positions open for the 2020 season anyway. So, I returned to BNN in a part-time role as a studio analyst for their off-season “Hot Stove League” coverage. As usual, I was assigned to cover the CBA. The big boys work in another area of the studio, covering MLB. I am not jealous, mind you. It’s just a fact.

I talk to the MLB guys occasionally, mainly to satisfy their curiosity about the CBA. It is almost like the two leagues are in different universes, primarily because each operation routinely blacklists any player or coach that works for the other. The rule does not apply to unimportant positions like office boy and General Manager though. Or maybe it does, nobody has ever bothered to test it.

I continued to work on CBA studio coverage during the 2020 season, and constantly addressed the rumors about my next CBA job. They did not realize that I had “the itch”. It’s the same feeling that college football coaches sometimes have about their ability to win at the next level. I am only 46 years old, and I am not ready to retire or coast. Could I have success in MLB?

There was really only one way to find out. I would have to cross a forbidden barrier. It could be a one-way ticket because it was likely that no CBA team would ever hire me again. So it had to be the right situation.

Fortunately for me, the perfect situation presented itself. I will have more on that soon. I will say that I was very nervous about leaving Louisville, the only home that I have ever known. But sometimes, we need to step out of our comfort zone to grow.

First I need to take a few posts to describe the events in MLB from Opening Day 2013 to the end of the 2020 season. Please indulge this interlude as it is necessary in order to provide context for what comes next.

Thank you for reading.

Under The Hood

This league was created with OOTPB 14.6.33 using the MLB Quick Start. Most of the settings are default, including the financials. I simulated the seasons between 2013 and 2020 without taking control of any team; however, I had already decided which team that I would take, and when, regardless of their situation when the time came.

Besides coinciding with the end date of my previous dynasty, the purpose of rolling the league forward several years was to create a semi-fictional environment with the history of major league baseball attached. As I continue forward, this will essentially become a fictional league. Even now, the 2013 players that remain active have been transformed by the player development engine for eight years. Some of them developed as you might expect, and some did not. For all practical purposes, this is a fictional experience.

A word about ratings and scouting…

I will use a 20-80 scale for this dynasty. For those who don’t use it, this scale assumes 50 to be the average with increments of 10 up or down being one standard deviation. The average player (50) equates to about 2 WAR. A score of 40 is about replacement player level. A rating of 60+ is a very good player. A rating of 70+ is an elite player.

My scouting accuracy is set to normal. My overall rating is determined by the following formula: ratings 40%, current year stats 30%, prior year stats 20%, two years ago stats 10%. So stats make up 60% of the overall rating. The overall rating is based on the AI evaluation, not pure ratings (a checkbox on the global setup page). Thus, it is possible in this system for the overall rating to be higher than the potential rating, such as when an average player has his career year. This may be confusing to some, but I like it.

I will probably not quote stars and numbers when talking about ratings in this dynasty, but instead I will use terms like “above-average” and “mediocre” to describe players. I am mostly focused on the overall rating, except prospects will be graded on potential.

And now, back to your regularly scheduled program.

2013 Season

NEWS: Prior to the start of the season, the commissioner rescinded his decision to change the playoff format. Major League Baseball retained its prior format with one wild card team per league, and three rounds of playoffs. Also, the team with the best record will be the host team for all playoff rounds, including the World Series. The winner of the All-Star Game (an exhibition game) will no longer count for anything other than pride.

2014 Season

NEWS: Prior to the season, the National League voted to adopt the designated hitter rule. The increase in interleague play that resulted from the new 6x5 format created a safety concern for pitchers, who were called upon to bat frequently but not regularly. The player’s union was opposed to abolition of the DH, so the only logical solution was for the National League to adopt the rule.

For the first time, we have two totally fictional MVPs. Manny Martinez was drafted by Atlanta in round 1 (#14 overall) of the 2015 draft and traded to New York in July 2016. Rodney Rutledge was drafted by Pittsburgh in round 1 (#10 overall) of the 2014 draft.

NEWS: William Dewitt Jr., owner of the St. Louis Cardinals, passed away in September and ownership of the team passed to his son, 50-year-old Bill Dewitt III. The younger Dewitt has an undergraduate degree from Yale and a MBA from Harvard Business School. He has served as President of the Cardinals franchise since 2006 when his father purchased the team from Anheuser Busch. As President, he was responsible for all business aspects of the team including marketing and finances. Bill Dewitt III is said to be tolerant in management style and charitable in financial matters.

Note: This is by no means the first owner to die, but it is the most significant to our story.

I noticed that in all of the years you simmed to build your league history, I was sadden to see that the Cubs never reached higher than basically .500. I realize that they haven't done much in 105+ years, but this just sucks. :-)

Unfortunately I see where you are headed, so I will have the struggles of following your new team and my favored Cubs.

Oh well, good luck. I look forward to seeing where the story takes you.

Well Orcin, Great Way to Start the Story but I have a feeling what will happen next when we get to the 2020s, I'm planning to see expansion to 32 or 36 teams, I Can't wait for it.

Excellent start ... but what the heck happened to the 2020's Seattle?? ... they certainly have the Vikings' luck ... Looking forward to more of this, mate ...

It would have been nice to see the Mets make the playoffs at least once between now and 2020...

Excited to get into an Orcin thread from page 1

Did you edit the Batter/Pitching Aging/Development speeds at all? Or talent change randomness?

I used .50/1.25/.50/1.25 and TCR=50.

THE PERFECT SITUATION

There is no consensus among the various stories floating around out there about the impetus for this opportunity. Perhaps the truth is a concoction of several events.

We do know that Bill Dewitt III assumed the ownership of the St. Louis Cardinals upon his father’s death slightly more than a year ago. The process of mourning and probate delayed some administrative tasks, such as extending the soon-to-expire contracts of the management after a successful 2019 season. One unconfirmed theory is that Dewitt used the distractions as an excuse to delay the renewals, so that he could have more time to evaluate his management team. GM John Mozeliak had been on the job since 2008. The franchise had been to the playoffs 8 times with 2 championships during his tenure. Mozeliak was clearly not happy about his lame duck status, and he made some veiled public comments about it at various points during the 2020 season.

The “good news, bad news” results on the field only added to the tension. The 2019-20 regular campaigns were very successful for the Cardinals, as they posted back-to-back 97-win seasons and earned two division titles. However, the post-season experiences were frustrating. The team ran into the powerful Los Angeles Dodgers in the LCS and lost both times. The 2020 series ended in a demoralizing sweep, and there was a brief meeting between Dewitt and Mozeliak on the morning after the LCS. Mozeliak left the facility immediately after the meeting without talking to reporters.

Insiders speculate that Dewitt wanted to install his own management team in place of his father’s. Dewitt also had issues with the overall direction of the franchise. The major league team was very competitive, but the farm system had been allowed to decline in recent years and was no longer capable of producing the next crop of young stars. The Cardinals’ minor league organization was rated #23 by the end of 2020, with only one prospect among the top 100. The minor league rosters were glutted with non-prospects. In addition, the franchise had sliced scouting and player development expenses to well below the major league average in order to support a ballooning payroll. The Cardinals have a nice core, but it is essentially the same roster that lost the 2017 World Series to Tampa Bay. The franchise is entering a period of expiring contracts for some older stars and younger players that would form the next core. Rumor has it that Dewitt did not trust Mozeliak to make the right “sign or walk” decisions on this large and important group.

Whatever the motivations, the Cardinals decided to clean house after the 2020 season. The action was known in St. Louis as Black Monday.

Dewitt was determined to find a new GM that was experienced in building a sustainable winning franchise. He wanted someone that would value internal development and build a successful farm system. He found his next general manager in a strange place where no MLB owner had gone before.

Welcome to the St. Louis Cardinals, Mr. Orcin. May we call you Otto? Please ignore that “greenhorn” label next to your name. You may not have any experience in Major League Baseball (MLB), but we know about your 20 years in the Continental Baseball Association (CBA) and as a BNN baseball analyst. Your prior accomplishments are the reason that we hired you to manage our franchise.

We are confident that you will hit the ground running, and begin a new era of success for the Cardinals. We are accustomed to success here and we expect it, but we don’t take it for granted and you obviously don’t either. Your diligence and attention to detail are legendary, almost as impressive as your appetite for espresso. You are probably anxious to get started, so let’s get this press release issued so you can begin your work.

Oh yes… one more thing… we did get a contract signed by this new Special Assistant to the GM that you wanted. His name was Sal, right? I had to check with HR on the job description that you gave us. They were fine with statistical analysis, but a bit puzzled by the job duties described as voodoo and haircuts. I guess you know what you need.

Bill Dewitt III

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

November 2, 2020 (BNN)

Subject: Orcin Tapped to Handle GM Duties for Cardinals

When St. Louis made wholesale changes in the front office after last season, fans were left wondering in which direction their favorite club would head. The hiring of former Continental Baseball Association GM Otto Orcin simply led to more questions.

"I'm the new kid on the block. I know that I've got a lot to prove," conceded Orcin. "When you take over a ball club, you don't have an offseason. There are signings, trades, meetings, arbitration, drafting the right young players. It's a year-round job.

“There are a lot of positives here. We're going to try to build on those and field the best team we can. We will also make the farm system an organizational priority in order to continue the Cardinals tradition of internally-developed stars.

“But let me make one thing perfectly clear. The Cardinals’ team focus is on winning the 2021 World Series. There will be no rebuilding project here. This club is very close to a championship, and I intend to make the necessary moves to allow us to finish the job.”

Heath Bell retires?? He was still around in 2020?

The way I know I have become "old" is that all the coaches are players I grew up rooting for. I was at Phillies - DBacks game this season and I am looking at Gibson, Trammel, Williams, Nagy and I was like wow. I remember when those guys were rookies, lol, time flies...
