The Phillies and the NCAA need to be smacked hard

Seems like a tie for jerk of the year so far in 2014. I'll give the Phillies the edge for their institutional childishness in ratting out a 5th round draft pick who decided to go back to school. The NCAA is no better since they lost a case, Oliver v NCAA back in 2009 but still seem to have some restriction on the rights of people to retain legal advice when negotiating contract offers.

I can't understand the Phillies though. What were they thinking? I'd love to find out if one of the prospects they did sign in the past violated the same NCAA rules. They could open themselves up to a significant lawsuit if their actions are found to be in retaliation or in an effort to intimidate. Good luck signing prospects this year.

As for the NCAA, I always associate it with a bad smell. Organized crime never had it so good.

The Phllies did the same thing to their 6th round pick Jason Monda as well. Absolutely disgraceful Hopefully the prospects and agents are taking notice and Philly will never be able to sign another draft pick!

I hope some agents decide to stick together and stick it to the Phillies. This is expected from the clowns that run the NCAA but this is below the belt on the Phillies side.

The Phillies have been the most mismanaged team top-to-bottom since Pat Gillick retired and Mike Arbuckle was snubbed for the GM job. Stuff like this is just no surprise at all anymore.

Hmm...

The way you end your amateur career (in the U.S. at least) is to declare eligibility and hire an agent You're not allowed to change your mind. Otherwise the NCAA becomes a tool for use in professional contract negotiations. If the NCAA is to remain an amateur athletic organization, that cannot be allowed.

When a player comes out early, then he has to live with the best contract he's offered. The player can hold out, but he can't go back to college.

The kid's agent is to blame. He promised the kid more than he could deliver.

The problem with that thought is that players don't declare their eligibility for the MLB draft - it's predetermined. As long as a player meets the criteria, they can be drafted:

Quote:
To be drafted a player must fit the following criteria:
  • Be a resident of the United States, Canada, or a U.S. territory such as Puerto Rico. Players from other countries are not subject to the draft, and can be signed by any team (unless they are current members of college teams in the aforementioned countries).
  • Have never signed a major or minor league contract.
  • High school players are eligible only after graduation, and if they have not attended college.
  • Players at four-year colleges are eligible after completing their junior years, or after their 21st birthdays.
  • Junior and community college players are eligible to be drafted at any time.

^^^ This.

Ruben Amaro, Jr. acts like a spurned ex-lover half the time and acts to harm other people and their careers without regard for impact on the club. And the people he likes? Well, it's like Oprah! HERE'S A CONTRACT! AND HERE'S A CONTRACT! Oh, we don't need another 37 year old outfielder? HERE'S A CONTRACT!
