Retirements

I know players announce retirements at the end of a season, but how about having popular players announce retirements at the beginning of the season - within the story lines, of course.

There would be a personal message: You have been informed by... and then the following story line:

<Name of team's> fans were saddened by the news today, that <Name of Player> has announced he will retire at the end of the season.

<Quote from Player> "After so many years playing this sport, it's time to move on. I've had a great time playing for <Name of Team> and the fans here in <name of City> are the best in the world. Now I want to spend more time with my family

During his X year career, <Name of Player> has a batting average of .XXX which is 5th all time, and he ranks X on the list of Home Runs with XXX.

A ceremony will be held for <Name of Player> before the last game of the season.

(Wow!, I just wrote my first news story for OOTP)
This would obviously only be for players who have played for a certain number of years and have achieved a certain number of accomplishments. Then. after the last game of the season:

There were hugs, tears, and cheers as fans bid <Name of Player> Adieu. In his speech before his last game, <Player Name> said,
"I've had a great career here in <City>. I'm grateful to so many people who've helped me along the way. Most of all, I'll miss you, the fans."

Following the game <Team> retired <Player's> number.

*OR*, if a team's player gets inducted into the Hall of Fame, there could be a storyline about a ceremony for the player and a storyline about a retiring the his number, etc.

I was inspired by re-watching this after so many years. So classy and elegant.

October 1, 1983 Yaz retires. - YouTube

(Editoral comment: Not like the awful ceremony that fat bozo Charles Steinberg planned for Derek Jeter. To all you young Red Sox fans out there, THIS is what Fenway Park was and still should be. Thanks to Lucchino, Henry, Werner and Steinberg, it has become a total clown show.)

(Do me a favor. When you get to the part where John Kiley plays "My Way" on the Hammond X-66, turn the volume up as loud as you can. THAT is Fenway Park)

This exists already. It's rare I have had maybe 3 in the last 10 yrs in my EBL vs MLB league but the game does have it.

Really? Jeeze, I wish it happened more. I saw the lifetime home run leader of my 50 year league toil in the minors forever toward the end of his career, then quietly disappear into anonymity. You wouldn't think it would happen to a player like that.

That's a flaw in the aging curve, AI eval or some connection with the retirement switch. Old and formerly great players should not play in the minors for more than a part of a season. The impetus to retire should grow each year after 36 maybe 38 for real superstars when the decline is permanent.

Albert Pujols sat on the FA list for 2 yrs before he retired.

Yup, essentially what we need in 16 is more respect for the vets. Code it so the popular players and the superstars bow out gracefully, with a running storyline.

Makes it much more realistic.

They have it in the game but I swear it is always no name players who announce their retirement early.

I have yet to get even a one time all-star do this unfortunately. It's a boring storyline when Joe Backup Catcher for 10 years announces it.

Yeah, I wish there was a better storyline to follow for players who were a huge part of your organization when they announce their retirement.

Hopefully at some point during the season so there is a story line about their "farewell tour".

Something akin to Derek Jeter or.... Yaz... see the link in the first post. I guess the criteria would be how popular the player is. Players who are popular Locally and/or Nationally should get the coverage.

If it's already in the game, I have NEVER seen it. It should be more prominent for players whom you've grown attached to.
