Arbitration improvement
I would suggest that you should be able to see what a player files for in arbitration. Currently it seems that the only way to see what a player wants in arbitration is to offer him an extension. The problems with that are that he doesn't always want a 1 year extension, and also your owner will not allow that 1 year extension if you don't have the money for it. This forces you to go through with an arbitration hearing without knowing how much the player is demanding. It would be more realistic if the player's arbitration filing was available like in real life, and that a deal should be able to be worked out before the hearing without it being considered an extension.

Great suggestion. You can also look up in his contracts screen to get an idea what the arbitration value might be, but that's not actually what you are looking for.

Right. And really, the owner is kind of screwing himself in this situation. On the one hand he says that you don't have money for an extension, but ends up costing himself more money at the end of the arbitration hearing when you could have worked with the player and met in the middle.

you've got this all wrong. i have been involved with probably 80 arbitration cases, all on the player's side. the challenge in arbitration is trying to see where the team is filing. it is just a guess. you look at past comparable players and try to find players that support your submittal, and then you try to find players that the team will use to support their number.
but it is always a blind exchange. there is a conference a coupe of days before you submit your number with all agents and the union to just go over everything and make sure that there are no surprises. it is fun to get the team's numbers and take a look to see how close you were. some agents file high numbers because they want to have negotiation room. but if you file too high, the team can just ignore you and go the hearing and win. if you want to be aggressive, you have to file closer to the player's real value. whomever is closest to the mid-point of the value in the arbitrator's eye wins. so to be more realistic in this arena, a system would have to be based upon actual awards from previous seasons for other players. as is, we just see what looks to be an arbitrary number. there is no real 'game' in that. |

No, I don't have it all wrong. Teams and players come to terms on 1 year contracts through negotiation and the exchanging of terms, and avoid the arb. hearing all the time. You can't do that in this game for the reasons I outlined above regarding ownership restrictions. Just want it to be realistic.

yes, you do have it all wrong. the only time you see the player's number is AFTER the blind exchange. you do not get to see their number and adjust your number off that. you have to do that beforehand.
