An article suggesting that pitching coaches should have more effect on their teams in OOTP
The Baseball Analysts: The Mazzone Effect Revisited
The author makes a strong case with data that having Leo Mazzone for your pitching coach translates to better pitching results (like lower Pitching ERA), and concludes that "Leo's influence seems to extend beyond a simple off-field training strategy for his pitchers, and both starters and relievers benefit from his oversight." Perhaps in OOTP 10 there might be room to model this? |

one of the staff/personnel improvements ive advocated for is for the game to keep track of stats (under "managerial history") for ALL personnel, not just managers. i think its pretty important to know how your pitching and hitting coaches have fared in their careers by seeing how the teams they have been involved with have pitched (ERA/Runs Allowed) and hit (AVG/Runs). if nothing else, such a recorded history would help us in hiring decisions aside from just comparing ratings b/w personnel. if a pitching coach's teams have had ERA's over 5 his entire career, that would make me more reticent to hire him. i would hope that there is some correlation b/w staff attribute ratings and team performance. i wouldnt expect staff to have a dramatic effect on the end results, but i think we should be able to gauge any appreciable effects through tracking these stats.
a side benefit would be the ability to track the history of staff in terms of where they have been employed. right now, aside from managers, the only way to see where a coach has been is to go through the team or league transactions from the past (assuming youre saving them). i know its not a huge deal, but i think its interesting to track the progress of personnel as well as players. btw, i did look into progression of their ratings at one point and yes, over time the attributes do change. as with players, not every coach will improve or some will improve faster/greater than others but it does happen.

![]() and speaking of mazzone, john smoltz had some interesting things to say about him when he left atlanta. its not anti-leo, but certainly a less glowing assessment than others have made. How much do Braves miss Leo? | Braves | ajc.com lets assume for arguments sake that smoltz is right. in OOTP terms, if the game works like we think it should, mazzone would have a very high Teach Pitching attribute but his Handle attributes would be average. its just difficult to say if this thinking is correct, since its not easy to isolate coach attributes from random player development fluctuations, injuries and related elements, not to mention that we dont have an clear understanding of how strongly these ratings impact player stats/attributes and development.
