AI evaluation of defense
As mentioned here, there should be a way of having the AI weigh players based, in part, on their defense, in order to more accurately account for players in the Mark Belanger mold, where the player's defensive proficiency (in the manager's eyes, at least) made up for their below average hitting.

What I don't understand is that since the Lahman DB contains a csv of all the Gold Glove winners why doesn't Markus merely added a defensive bonus based on that file to his calculated defensive abilities. It would go a long way toward making fielding leaderboards make sense, not perfect but more in line with players expectations.

What do you do with other players of that era such as Ed Brinkman, Freddie Patek, and Jim Mason? They also provided little offensive impact, but their managers kept them in the lineup for their defensive skills. In other words, this is not a problem limited to a single player.
