Ability to negotiate a player's retirement

I'm in an online league and have a pitcher who is a franchise legend and first-ballot HoF'er. On his last extension I signed him through age 39 (was just a 2-year extension after I had given him a 3-year extension the last time around, so it wasn't like I signed the guy for 10 years) thinking I was safe because he has absolutely no injury history and is a "Greg Maddux-type" pitcher (16 movement & 20 control, but only 7 stuff). Last season and this season, however, he is just falling apart. With a lifetime ERA around 3.20 and WHIP around 1.10, he has posted 4.13/1.36 and 5.37/1.65.

I think it would be realistic to add the ability to negotiate a player's retirement in cases like this. It doesn't happen very frequently in real life, but it does happen where the team will come to a guy and say, "We just don't have a spot for you in our rotation. You can spend the next few years collecting your check while sitting in the bullpen, or we can settle your contract now for a negotiated amount and you can try to latch onto a club through free agency." Obviously, it would have to be very difficult and rare to have this succeed, but if a guy has "Very High" Loyalty and "Very Low" Greed it may be easier to pull off.

I was thinking of a real life example and I know there was a real life, aging first baseman for an American League club and they told him before a season started that he would only be a part-time DH. He didn't want that so they negotiated a buyout and he signed with an NL club to play first base.

Anyway, it's a conversation I would have with a player as a GM in real life so I thought it could be explored for OOTP.

Can't you just release the player outright and the effect is almost the same? You're probably hoping to negotiate the financial hit to the team down a bit, right?

I don't know, I'm usually against any change that makes it easier for the human player in a solo league.

I was thinking along the exact same lines, even releasing the player outright.

But maybe there could be a way to make it easier for the AI to negotiate a player's early retirement, and more difficult for the human.
