The option to do away with owners
In our online league it has become clear this whole deal with owners controlling the budget is BS. I pay my $35 so I can have the latest version of the game to OWN, NOT BE A GM, BUT OWN my online team. Yet I have a computer owner who steals money from my cash and tells me how much money I can spend now and in the future on my team and will approve or reject trades and contracts. OK, Markus, if you want me to continue paying for this experience, please give me the ability to run my team completely from the top to the bottom. And no, the option to turn off owner control of finances does not work, at least in our online league.

Here are some screenshots from our league that Kurt is talking about.
First, the financial setting that owners have no say over our budgets. ![]() Yet when I log in as one of the owners and try to make a free agent offer, this happens.

I thought I remembered seeing this in OOTP 8 or 9. Though the popup mentions the owner, I believe this is simply telling you there's not enough money in your budget.
A few easy ways to check: 1) Reset the AI owner to be as fiscally friendly as possible. (I don't have the game open in front of me) If you do this and the trade goes through, then you're absolutely right and this needs fixing. If you do this and the trade still won't go through, then it's not the AI owner. 2) Edit in enough cash to change the team's budget so they could pay for the contract. Now does it go through? Though less definitive, that also points at a budgetary issue and not the AI owner. |

If the individual GM's set the budgets, then the game should not generate a budget for any of the teams. I think there's a good bit of the financial engine that needs some tweaking, and I've been kicking around some ideas that I need to put in the suggestion box.

I've always been under the impression that "turning off financials" means money does not exist in the OOTP universe. If this is wrong, well then silly me. I've never touched that option.

That's exactly what it means. If you turn financials off, there is no cash. Then again, if the idea of your league is the GM can do what they wish without any kind of restriction, then that may be the option for you.
If financials are on, there WILL be a budget determined by such things as market size, media contracts and so forth. IIRC the budget is there to prevent teams from going into the negatives. Perhaps I don't understand what you're looking for: I checked OTBA, and there appears to be free agency. What stops a GM from buying up as many contracts as they want? Bidding wars? Well, what tells a GM when he needs to stop bidding if there's no budget? In the pic posted it appears the team could not complete the trade due to lack of money. I would assume this means that deal couldn't be offered to a free agent either. I'd say if you want absolutely no limit, you can either turn financials off (in which case you'll need to come up with rules for salaries and free agency - bidding points is an option) or raise each team's market size to 20, fan loyalty to 100, and increase media contracts. Expect salaries to balloon however... |

The problem is that the GM's aren't allowed to spend all of the money that the team has at their disposal, even though the settings are supposed to allow just that. Then again, I'm one of the league's cheapest cheapskates, so I just about never run into budget issues.
