The notion that the Hall of Fame is for players who've accumulated the highest level of "fame", how does one measure fame by the way, instead of performance seems fanciful.

Going back to the post in this thread (by whom I forget) about their personal account of an interaction with Mike Mussina, I read this today:

Quote:
Cito Gaston's least favourite human being, former Oriole and Yankee starter Mike Mussina has called it a career after 18 seasons and 270 wins. So the debate now begins, whether or not 'The Moose' belongs among the greats of the game in the Hall of Fame. I say NO. His career win total only ranks him 33rd all-time and if Bert Blyleven with 287 wins and 3,701 strikeouts (fifth all-time) can't get in with his numbers then Mussina's doesn't quite cut it either. Plus, in my 16 seasons on the baseball beat, I never came across a more condescending athlete than Mussina. I witnessed him talking down to many sportswriters and broadcasters.

I'm curious as to what it was exactly that pissed Cito off about Mussina, but it sounds like it wasn't just a person here or there. I wonder if the Moose was even a clubhouse cancer.

Now whether someone is a great guy or jerk should or shouldn't matter to getting into the hall, I don't know, but I thought I'd pass this on nonetheless.

Cito's dislike of Moose probably happened at the All-Star game at Camden Yards in 93. Mussina got up in the pen to warm up and try to force himself into the game. Cito wouldn't bring him in. There were a bunch of t shirts around Baltimore that said,"**** Cito".

How many players worth about 130 wins over replacement in their careers still aren't HoFers?

The guy seems like a lock to me. Very good career over many years...
