It'd likely help him compile more plate appearances, but that's not likely to make up the baseline differences.

So for the good of the team, Mauer should not catch too much right now, considering the setup of the Twins. For selfish reasons, he should catch for at least till mid-career before a switch.

The knee injury took away a lot of his power and will end his catching days prematurely as well. Still, an obscene talent.

IIRC, no catcher has won a batting title in 60 years.

Edit: Ernie Lombardi was the last.

Edit deux: And Schnozz did it twice.

His knee will never be "normal" again. They removed the meniscus.

I understand where you're coming from. But, because of his knee problems I'd say moving him to third would probably increase his chances of being someone special because it would lower his chances of having his career cut short or interrupted from further issues with his knee.

From what I've read, with the meniscus removed, it's a bone on bone grind in the knee joint. Not exactly a promising scenario for a long-term career in the crouch.

If that's the case, then I'd push to have him moved ASAP.

I've been on the Joe Mauer bandwagon since 2003, when he moved up from Fort Myers (FSL) to New Britain (Eastern League). He hit .341/.400/.453 in 73 games at AA that season, and took the Rock Cats into the playoffs. Besides several other games he played in, my oldest daughter and I saw their playoff series against New Haven, in which Mauer's Rock Cats were finally eliminated by Alexis Rios' Ravens.

My daughter's favorite player in the Twins system had been Terry Tiffee (he had even more power than Mauer that year, and was the most regular starting position player), but by the end she conceded Mauer was okay too. Mauer was later named Baseball America's minor league POY.

And now Mauer has done it twice; and (will have) won the AL MVP.

Holy blast from the past Batman!

I hope he stays with the Twins.
