Franchise Legends Player Claim: Joe Cronin

Until I started this, I always thought of Joe Cronin as a member of the Red Sox. But after reviewing his career, I think I could very well be wrong. The old Washington Senators (who became the Twins), have a strong claim here.

Joe Cronin

The debate: Twins vs Red Sox

The numbers

Tenure: Twins 1928-1934, Red Sox 1935-1945

WARP 3: Twins 55.3 vs Red Sox 57.6

Championships: None

All-Star: 2 appearances for Twins, 5 for Red Sox

Awards: 3 Top 10 MVP finishes for Twins, 2 for Red Sox

Top 5 Seasons (WARP3): 12 (T), 11.9 (R), 11.3 (T), 10.6 (R), 10.2 (T)

Um, given the fact he never actually played for one of the two teams entered is a good indicator of where this needs to go.

To me that's like saying the Twins can't claim Walter Johnson either because he only played for the Senators, or that the Dodgers can't claim Campanella because he never went to LA. It's a franchise that moved.

I guess we see this differently. Cronin and Johnson were Senators and Campanella a Dodger. I understand what you mean, but Walter Johnson never heard of the Minnesota Twins, therefore he was a Senator.

I can see what you're saying...if I were to expand this to include the Senators as separate from the Twins, that would certainly be the case. I guess I just wanted to keep the universe from getting too unwieldy, and didn't want to have to draw lines between the Milwaukee Braves and Atlanta, the New York Giants and San Francisco, Brooklyn and L.A., even the St. Louis Browns and the Orioles. So I kept those franchises contiguous despite the moves. Also, since I'm planning to add a pair of Negro League teams at the end, I just feared having a 40-team league. Maybe when it's all done the way I planned it, I'll go through and do an "expansion" set that will break these down a bit further. But to promise that before I've even completed the initial base set would be irresponsible on my part...I've seen other roster debacles here, and don't want to cause my own

There's no "wrong" answer here, that's the fun of it. I appreciate your feedback and explanations.
