Hard to tell from the video highlights but how far must the runner from first have got to be thrown out from a deep fly ball to centre-left taking into account the wall-climbing/high-five delay?

Is there a category for Flied Into Double Play?
Not knocking Manny but anyone who gets put out at first base by a relay throw started in Left Field by Manny deserves a great big bucket of derision poured all over them.

I was looking at the Red Sox history... and I'd have to say Red Sox fans need to enjoy these WS while they can.
They won 5 WS before 1918, then nothing for 86 years... they've won 2 before 2018 now, so it appears they'll win 3 more in the next 10 years and then have another 86 year drought. ![]()

Not bad at all! I wonder how many fans get to see their teams win 5 WS titles in their lifetime. (Other than the Yankees fans) The best part is, I will not have to know that the 5th one will be the last one for me, won't I? ![]()

Nice couple of wins on Saturday.
![]() Okajima shut down because of his wrist problem, Buchholz to DL, Colon does not accept to be a RP... All of a sudden, DFAing Tavarez does not look like a greatest move for us. ![]()

Colon will be starting on Wednesday by the looks of it.
Another good win tonight. I haven't really been looking at the standings but we've finally got back above the Rays. I can't believe though that the Yankees are down in 5th...

Ortiz had a couple of good looking HRs. I guess it was just one of those early season, Japan trip related funk he had for the several weeks. I am not concerned about him anymore. I am not surprised about the Yankees' struggles at all. I think they have tried to rebuild their starting rotation with the young pithchers like Hughes and co, but have not been able to come up with the convincing results yet. 10 out of their 40-man roster are on DL right now, (You remember Pavano? ) including A-Rod and Posada. However, just like the last year, we will see them again in August/September, at the games that really count. I do not think they will stay at the bottom for long... ![]()

I can't get over how good Masterson looks, and with Lester & Bucholz starting to put it together, and Beckett & Dice still in their twenties. What a future rotation we have set up.
To think that four season ago we were still trying to get over the hump. Now we have two titles and a flock of great youngsters to keep us rolling, nevermind the money to bring in help whenever it's needed. Amazing. |

Wakefield. ![]() I have been his fan since that 1992 NLCS, when he was still a Pirate.

That man can pitch until he's 90 if he wants to.

An interesting thing to try would be having Wakefield as a middle 'starter' - I wanted to put reliever but I don't think long or mop-up will be his forte.
If in 2009 we have long trips and the off-days don't help the starters, they could go 4.1 or 4.2 (I know statistically speaking it precludes them from a W but as long as the team wins I don't care which name it goes against), and let Wakefield pitch between 2.1 and 3.1 innings depending on the need for Oka to setup for Paps. He's done long relief stints before (ALCS 2004 Game 3 ) and he could do that 3 days out of 5 no problems whilst the rotation recovers.

I do not know about that.
After all these years, his age finally started to show, I think... And my question is, CommishJoe, will he still be in the rotation in 2009? Beckett, Matsuzaka, Lester, Buchholz, Masterson, all still in their 20's in 2009, 3 of them in early 20's. And Wake lost his caddie, you know...

Hard not to like Wake, I remember there was one summer in the mid 90's where he was near unhittable for quite a stretch (I'm sure there were other such stretchs and huge games he threw for us, but that was one that sticks out to me). He's been such a gamer for us over the years. He's definitely one of my favorites as well. |

That year was magical in a way... That was the last year of my time in Boston and they just kept winning the games. I went to Fenway to see the games probably 15 times that year. Great memory.

That was the one, nice call. I just was looking on baseball reference dot com and that brought it back. Thanks for nailing down the year. I remember that summer well too. I went to several games that year too, we used to head down on the weekend and get bleacher seats or scalped if we were feeling particularly rich. Remember the days when you could head to the park the day of the game and get tickets. ![]() |

I hear it is not so anymore. There was no such a thing like Red Sox nation, no Pedro yet, and we had players like Clemens, Hanson, Sele, Vaughn, Valentin, Naehring, Greenwell..., and Canseco! It is amazing Wake has been on the team all these years...

And if the MLBPA had their way he probably wouldn't still be on the Red Sox. They absolutely hate the way that he has a rolling team option contract. But Wakefield doesn't have a problem with it, so why should the MLBPA? Maybe not every player is driven by just money alone...

Playing for a long time, got a couple of WS rings, and earned enough money to be able to have whatever he wants, and still be a nice guy. I wish I was a knuckle baller! ![]()
