It's a stress fracture of the ninth rib, and he won't even be allowed to pick up a baseball for four weeks according to MLB.com - that seems a bit harsh, because a lot of things that you pick up in normal life are probably heavier than a baseball and thus would be off-limits as well.

Bruney, Rasner, what's the difference?? They even have the same # of letters in their last names. Can't you give a country hick like me a break???

Seriously though, I'll eat crow about the Hughes injury. Personally, I wish I was right, but I can just hope that he heals up quicker than expected and that this was throwing him off.

What's to eat crow about? You were just reading the same speculation in the media that we all were, about how an injury could be fabricated to cover up the embarrassment of sending him down. As far as his injury goes, I really am more upset about that than I should be, I guess. I mean, how do you break a rib pitching a ball? Overthrowing like you never did before due to major league pressure and failing for the first time in your athletic life? That's all that I can think of, and it does not make me feel any better about his physical or mental capabilities.

Yes, that was surprising. I would have bet the ranch that somebody would claim him just to stick it to the Yankees. I bet Cashman owes a few more favors this morning.

Yea I'm very glad Chad cleared. It would have been bad if ol Joe would have had to jump back behind the plate again.

I can see the broken rib happening. Maybe not stretching right, over-extending on a pitch, or reaching for a grounder. Ribs can be sensitive. I, the pitcher, backed up a throw at the plate and got trucked by a runner. My ribs were hurt for weeks. Probably broken but I never went to a doctor.

Till this day, if I don't stretch right it'll hurt after a few piches.

With Hughes' injury history, I'm not surprised.

By the way, for those that have been watching the YES broadcasts, I have to say that I was impressed with their evaluation of Kennedy. It was spot on. The way they were talking about his reluctance to throw over the plate but the fact that he actually has good control.

It's wy I'm not extremely worried about him. He's a corners-guy and he isn't getting any calls. His pitches are just off the black.

To me, Hughes has been struggling worse. He is all over the mound with no true direction. Kennedy just needs to stop trying to be so fine (oh yea, he's hot. woo hoo!)

With all due respect to Molina, that is a very good idea, Astros. I bet "ol Joe" could still do a job.

Tomorrow, my last trip to old Yankee Stadium. I don't figure to make it back there again this season, tix are hard to come by and it's a hike and a half. So, this is it. I'm bringing extra hankies for my farewell to the grand old lady.

I bet Joe could still catch as well. I thought maybe they can activate him too, lol.

Where do you live man, I didn't know you were close.

Out on the Island. About 2 1/2 hours by train and subway, but no way I'm driving in with construction going on next door. Every night they tell you to take public transportation - it must be a real mess by car these days. But, I was determined to get there this year to say goodbye to the Stadium and I was lucky to have a friend of a friend with an extra ticket. Gonna take lotsa pix, buy lotsa beer (not driving, just need to stumble onto the train without falling into the platform gap), bellow the bleacher creature roll call, rub the Bambino's monument for luck, everything I can pack into one last trip. The new stadium will be only a few hundred feet away, I guess, but it will never be the same as old Yankee Stadium.

Have a great time, I plan on going a few times this year as well. I'm only about an hour tho.

Thanks, did. My buns are still thawing (a bit of hyperbole; it was chilly though; funny, but it was even colder on the ramps after the game with the wind whipping through) but it was well worth the trip.

It was great hearing the fans chant "Moooooooooooosssss" after every strikeout, which was three times in the sixth. Damon's homer was just below us - I had forgotten what a home run looks like when it's coming straight at you.

Yankee hits in abundance for a change meant not even missing A-Rod from the lineup. Embarassing moment: Asking my friend why they were bringing in Rivera (#42) to pitch the ninth with a five-run lead when it actually was Veras (#41). I blamed it on failing eyesight, which it may have been, really.

Some clown in a Boston Red Sox jersey was playing the crowd and they were giving it to him good. Good-natured for the most part, but I was amazed how so many people can quickly pick up on something as small as one person in a crowd like that.

I frequently listen to Yankee games on WCBS 880 AM Radio and at home games I notice the sound of somebody clanging something metal, usually to the rhythm of "tap, tap . . . tap, tap, tap, . . . tap, tap, tap, tap, ["Let's Go" - you know the chant]. This drives me a bit nuts at times because it goes on all . . . game . . . long. And it must be very near the WCBS Radio booth for me to hear it that clearly.

Around the eighth inning on a cold day the crowd naturally thins out, to the point where now I could hear that clanging from across the stadium. I briefly toyed with the idea of going over there to wrap the horseshoes around the kid's neck (that's the mental image that I always have had, a kid with horseshoes), but I surpressed it. Only because the Yankees were winning; if not, then perhaps I would not be typing here right now (j/k).

Anyway, after the game we take a walk up River Avenue to shop, which leaves me considerably poorer. I hear the clanging coming from an open pizzeria storefront up ahead. That's it! I'm going to kill that kid, Yanks Win 6-1 or not!

I get up there, searching for my murder weapon, when I see him. Not a kid, but one of those fan-loved (I guess; I hope) eccentric personalities. Named Freddie, he's sitting with his homemade sign in front of the pizzeria, banging a spoon on a large frying pan, which looks like he's been banging away at it for years.

Suddenly the hate drains away from me. Now that I see who he is, and what he's making noise with, I can't be angry any more. From the grin on his face, he seems quite happy with himself and the world and simply wants to celebrate by banging on his frying pan. I think he would have been doing that even if it were Mariners Win 6-1!

He turned his smile upon me and I smiled back. For some reason, I feel good about what happened; from now on, when I hear him on the radio clanking away at Yankee home games, I don't think it will bother me any more.

Poor old Blue Jays... In the 'actual results' table they are 5th in the AL East , but using Expected Win-Loss they are 1st...

On May 5, 2007

Boston 19-10
Baltimore 14-16
Tampa 14-16
New York 13-15
Toronto 13-17

May 5, 2008

Boston 20-13
Baltimore 16-15
Tampa 16-15
New York 17-16
Toronto 15-17

one year apart, teams in same order and Baltimore and Tampa have the same record as each other...

A lot closer this year. 4.5 from 1st to last, 5.5 from 1st to second last year.

Well, not quite Wiki but I did get some hits in a Google search on him so you know what you are talking about. I never heard of him! Glad I have now, though. "Clank, clank . . . clank, clank, clank . . . clank, clank, clank, clank, Let's go!"
