Overall, not a bad opening series. The Jays look to have a pretty tough pitching staff, so it's not too surprising that the Yanks only scored 8 runs. Still, they won 2 out of 3 and the pitching staff looked pretty strong. Great outings by Hughes & Wang. Chamberlain and Rivera giving us a 1-2 punch we haven't seen since Rivera and Wetteland. The only bad outing was by the guy who we all expected it from, Mussina.

I'm looking forward to seeing what we can do against the up and coming Rays. Should be a very interesting series.

I think we can all agree that last nights result was probably not what anyone was expecting. After seeing our 6-3 loss I saw the 13-4 score for the TB-NYY match and thought that sounds about right until I realised it was a TB win. Was surprised to see Kennedy's line and also the shelling that Hawkins received especially after his last outing against a 'stronger' side.

Yeah, I'm waiting for Terpripken to show up and brag (I'm surprised that he has not updated or started a new Rays thread).

It's been said many times before, but I will say it again: One of the great things about baseball is that you play it almost every day during the season, and each day brings a brand new game and a new beginning. Until you are 10 games out of first place, of course.

Hawkins stank again but don't forget our good friend F********h who gave up a three run homer to the first guy he faced. Two of those runs were charged to Hawkins.

I'd say the Yankees still need to sort out their bullpen and one or two positions in their starting rotation. The kids are key, of course. I remember thinking last night that it would be a miracle if all three of those baby bombers actually turned out to be great pitchers.

It's ok. The more Hawkins and Farnsworth suck - and this isn't too hard for them - the more we'll see out of Ohlendorf, Traber, and eventually Patterson.

Wang has got to be the most underrated 19 game winner. Even in my fantasy league he was being drafted as a 3rd or 4th starter...
He looked great today...glad to see him use all 4 pitches effectively and mix things up.

The thing with him is that he does not seem comfortable with the pressure of being a #1. That's partly my observation (imagination?) as a fan and partly what I have heard whispered about (so to speak, as if media is even capable of whispering).

So, after the first week of baseball, the Yankees and Red Sox are fighting for last place in the AL East. Who would have guessed that Yeah it's cold, but it does speak to the Jays and Rays both getting better. Those teams could definately make the AL East race VERY interesting.

As for our first week, I'm very impressed with Wang. Good to see him throw like the ace we need. Chamberlain is throwing like he wants to stay in the pen However, I would expect him in the rotation after the all-star break. Especially if Kennedy doesn't shape up. Patterson or one of the other kiddies is going to be pressuring management for spots in the pen before long.

The offense is sluggish, but that's Ok. It's very early and it's the pitcher's month. It's good to see the Yanks winning these pitching duels though. A stat I saw was the Yanks were 6-36 last year when scoring less than 4 runs. We've already won 3 games that way this year. To me, that's a great sign.

It's scary to think that we need a good outing from Mussina in order to avoid losing the series to the Rays.

Well, that's it for my miscellanious ramblings on Monday morning. Back to work I go

Wang has no problem being an ace. He ran into some problems in September last year, and they carried over into the post season. They've worked with him with pitch selection, and is now mixing up his go to pitch so its not as predictable. Young pitchers sometimes fall into patterns, luckily they nipped this in the bud ASAP!

Man, as good as Joba looks in the pen, I am excited to see how he can do as a starter. I agree with Joe, it'll probably be right after the all-star break. There is no need to rush him, other then the fact that Mussina is, well, Mussina. Kennedy will be fine, not sure if you all caught that game, but the umpire was giving him absolutely no calls. Really, it was awful. I can see how that can be wearing on a young SP making his first start in what could be his first full season. Don't rush to judgment on him.

As far as the pen goes, man, it looks like the kiddies will be the go to ones and Farnsworth and Hawkins will become the mop up dudes, lol. I was sad to see them send that guy down when they activated Pettitte. Correct me if I am wrong, but I think they signed Hawkins for a one year deal.

I like how Girardi has managed the pen so far as well. I already see an improvement Tho, in all honesty, I could have managed the pen better.

Anyone who said Giambi getting injured before Mussina gets pulled wins the pool!!!

Here's an interesting article on leaving Chamberlain in the pen this year:

Joba belongs in bullpen -- Baseball, Kyle Farnsworth -- Newsday.com

My favorite part:

Quote:
If you take away Chamberlain's ability to locate, the movement on his fastball and his variety of pitches, you know what you get?

Kyle Farnsworth.
He's got an interesting point. With the way the bullpen is this year, they might actually end up using him for 140 innings out of the pen. Does it make sense to leave him there the entire year then bring him into the rotation next year?

Really, I wish you guys would respect my sensibilities by using the polite way to refer to that man: F********h. Please use the correct number of asterisks.

Hawkins, on the other hand, will come around and be better than what we have seen so far, I think.

And I agree with you guys that Chamberlain has to go to the starting rotation at some time in the near future. Much as it would be comfortable to see how he would do in the long run as set-up man and closer, his up-side potential is such that we cannot overlook the possibility of his being one of the greats if he can do for 6 or 7 innings what he's doing now for 1 or 2.

They have enough pitching talent on the team and down on the farm to make up for his absence from the bullpen. Anything to keep from using F********h (that's 8 asterisks, count'em) as anything but a mop-up guy.

OMG, they scratched Kennedy because of anticipated rain and decided to wipe out the pen instead. I gotta wonder what Girardi was thinking on this one.
