Yeah, I think the Zito signing was better than either the Darren Dreifort or the Mike Hampton FA moves. I don't like comparing position players to pitchers, but the Pirates signed Pat Meares to a 4-year, $16M contract in the mid-90s and I'd rank Zito above that in that at least Zito is above replacement level. Still, this is damning with faint praise if ever that phrase existed.

Luck may be part of it...but his 5 walks in 96 batters faced is pretty damned good, as well as ZERO home runs allowed.

RE: Barry Bonds. The Giants can sign him starting May 1, right? I can see it now and I can see the Giants putting all the banners back up for him, having him play the rest of the year, reaching another milestone or two ... than having him retire at the home finale.

The Giants aren't going anywhere...why give Bonds 300-400 PA's, when they can use that to develop a younger player.

OK, fine...then play the scrubs and save a hell of a lot of money.

Use the money to purchase the contracts of some excellent prospects.

I wasn't advocating the Giants signing Bonds, more pointing out that they're already blocking youngsters by playing those 2 guys, and Ray Durham, and likely Omar Vizquel when he gets healthy.

SF needs to ditch that group of old guys and let their current scrubs play to see if any of them will stick at the MLB level.

Oh, and they need to fire Sabean, like 2 years ago.

I'm not sure anything is worse than the Mike Hampton deal to me. As a Mets fan, I went from being disappointed that they didn't sign him to relieved that they weren't stuck with him.

Give it time, there are still five years left on the Zito deal.

When he's 31 and throwing 79mph fastballs, reevaluate.

If he is 31, and throwing 79mph fastballs, then he is already selling insurance.

Yes Zito is crap-o-la and I really didnt like the signing at the time but if he can just be a aveagre pither id frickin be happy, we already have Cain and Lincecum, Lowry...if hes healthy....and Sanchez who is showing hes a true starter finally....hell Zito isnt a bad #3 or 4 pitcher.....just not a 3 or 4 pitcher that gets paid 18mill a year bahaha....yes im crying inside

Denny Neagle's deal was crap. Kevin Brown's turned out to be alot of dead salary weight. But yea, Zito is not worth near what he got.Why did SF sign a pitcher anyways? I would have gone after a big bat to help ease the loss of Bonds. They have plenty of good young arms, it was a really really stupid move.

Zito loads the bases with nobody out to begin his start against Cincy.

RBI base hit, pop out, RBI base hit with a 2nd run scoring on a bobble in the outfield, 2 run single.

5 run first inning, 1 out recorded.

Well given my screen name I figured I'd weigh in.

Yeee gods, what's happened to him? I mean, some of his years with the A's were so-so in the W-L category but in one of those it was more due to poor run support than terrible pitching. But ever since he went to SF he has been bad. And now what? No one is going to trade for him with his performance and contract. Guess you have to really think long and hard before forking over 7 year deals. Still, I'm disappointed.

Has there ever been a good long term deal on a pitcher?

Mike Mussina wasn't a bad deal.

He's playing through an extension now so I don't count last year and this year.

Hitters might be more consistent but 7 years is too long IMO for a deal for most. It's hard to say where you'll be in 7 years and being that locked in I think is bad.
