Barry Zito

I'm watching the D'Backs-Giants game right name, and Barry Zito is pitching. I like this guys as a person, but his contract may turn out to be one of the worst signings ever... with his current stuff, he'd need the control of a Moyer to succeed, but we all know Moyer is one of a kind.

Sorry Giants fans, this contract may cripple your franchise the coming years.

I'm listening to the game, and he has walked the bases load with nobody out. He then got 2 outs before giving up a 2 run single to Brandon Webb.

I still hold that Darren Dreifort was the worst long-term signing ever. Zito, at least, had a track record and is healthy enough to pitch, Dreifort got a huge payday based almost exclusively on potential and then spent what seemed like most of the duration on the disabled list.

Barry Zito spending most of his contract on the disabled list would probably end up being the best situation for the Giants.

It's truly laughable to me that Brian Sabean was given a contract extension.

Zito is still a below average inning eater. He's still at least as valuable as Kyle Lohse.

i dunno...he's @ 87 pitches in the 5th inning. not much of an innings eater when he's getting torched.

Or you should say he already lasted 5 innings despite not pitching very well. He pitched into the 6th inning in 70% of his starts in 2007, and ended up with nearly 200 innings pitched. His ERA wasn't good, but that's pretty much fits the definition of a below average inning eater.

Maybe he can have a talk with Gaylord Perry.

ANyhow, with the money saved on not keeping Bonds you'd think the Giants would have at least signed a couple of players that could at least pretend to be hitters capable of being used in the lineup above the 6th spot, to a 1 or 2 year contract.

Maybe they can just use that money to sign Barry Bonds to a 1 or 2 year contract?

A 1-year contract for Bonds would be very smart IMO.

I have my fingers crossed for Oakland to do just that, especially if Jack Cust continues to make last season look like a flash in the pan.

In general or for the Giants? I don't know if he is worth much to them, as he has no future and probably couldn't get them to .500.

If he was making $4.5 million like Lohse, I'd agree.

I have been a Giants fan for over 35 years.

There is ZERO chance Barry Bonds is re-signing with this team. Never going to happen - WAY too much baggage.

As far as Zito here is pretty much the reaction of every Giants fan to the signing:

1. first day - We signed him - Great! We need an established pitcher to help the youngsters
2. second day - we paid him WHAT!?!?!?!?!?
3. third day - and no one else was offering even half that!?!?!?!?!?
4. fourth day - you know Sabean is an idiot.
5. first day of 2007 spring training - wow he doesn't look all that good - I am pretty sure I could hit that 82mph fastball
6. first day of 2007 season - uh, yeah
7. everyday since - you have got to be kidding me

Zito is the single most untradeable entity in sports right now. You couldn't find a single team that would take on his contract if you asked for nothing in return.

Barry Bonds is arguably the best FA signing in the history of the modern FA era, Zito is arguably the worst.

and the worst part of it all is he is just going to get worse and worse as his contract goes up. We are in the books for him until 2013!!!!!

Zito may be an overpriced untradeable flop, but at least he knows the correct way to wear a uniform involves stirrups

I'll bet Sabean is really wishing that Dave Littlefield was still employed as a GM....

The one good thing Zito's done in San Francisco is bring stirrups to the Giants. I love him for that.

I would rather have Lohse this year than Zito, even at the same salary.

How 'bout some love here for Lohse? To this point, he has pitched brilliantly for the Cardinals.

Lohse indeed has been a surprise. And I have always liked him. But, I'd rather wait more than 3 weeks before I feel he has turned a corner. If he is still effective in mid-June, I'll agree.

I don't see what's so special about Lohse this year. It seems he's just lucky with balls in play.
