Japanese school team hit for 66 runs in two innings

kid is lucky his arm didn't fall off

Quote:
TOKYO, April 17 (Reuters) - A Japanese high school pleaded for a regional game to be abandoned after surrendering 66 runs in less than two innings, local media reported on Thursday.

The coach of Kawamoto technical high school threw in the towel to spare his pitcher’s arm with his team losing 66-0 with just one batter out in the bottom of the second.

The hapless hurler had already sent down over 250 pitches, allowing 26 runs in the first inning and 40 in the second before Kawamoto asked for mercy.

Yikes, 66 runs and only 4 outs. It seems you would expect that if nothing else by accident there would have been more outs made than that.

I think you guys have heard of this story about Matsuzaka too.
Yes, it is crazy, Japanese high school baseball.

[edit] The legendary 3 days at the 1998 summer Koshien

In the quarterfinal of that year's Summer Koshien, Matsuzaka threw 250 pitches in 17 innings in a win over powerhouse PL Gakuen. (The previous day he had thrown a 148-pitch complete game shutout.) The next day though trailing 6-0 in the top of the eighth inning, the team miraculously won the game by scoring 7 runs in the last two innings (four in the eighth and three in the ninth). In that game he started in left field, but came in as a reliever in the ninth inning to record the win in 15 pitches. In the final, he threw a no-hitter, the second ever in a final. This performance not only elevated him to rock star status but also garnered him the attention of many scouts. After graduating from high school, he was taken by the Seibu Lions with the first pick of the 1998 draft, although both the Colorado Rockies and Arizona Diamondbacks of the American Major Leagues also recruited him heavily.[2]

Makes me wonder if we'll ever see a player pitch that much ever in the United States at the professional level.

I'm just surprised this didn't happen to the Detroit Tigers first.

How many of those runs were unearned? Enough to bring the pitcher's ERA to under 400?

Reminds me of my Junior varsity team. Course, my ERA wasnt so bad, merely because most of the runs were unearned. We did lose a couple of games 20something-3.

My finest baseball moment:

It was the championship game, when I was playing at the midget level... or maybe bantam. Anyway. The regulation length is 6 innings. They tie the game in the bottom of the 6th (the score was 26-26!), so I come in with one out and runners on. I strike two guys out. Next inning, the first extra inning, we get nothing. I give them nothing either. The inning after, we score 2, and I hold them for the win, 28-26. It still surprises me that We managed to score 52 runs in the first six innings and managed only 2 in the following two innings. That was memorable.

My friend on the other team tells me that his coach was furious after the game, even going as far as demeaning his players by saying "You guys didn't do ANYTHING right tonight!", to which my friend replied "Well, our hitting wasn't so bad".

We still talk about it several, several years later .

I doubt it. Maybe in 1901, but not now.
