Not just any horse, but the filly that finished second. I was just listening to the race on ESPN Radio. Apparently she broke two ankles and had to be immediately put down. Certainly something you don't like to see.

Takes all the enjoyment out of it for me and I don't understand the basic non mention of it by anyone afterwards.

It really makes me feel sad inside and altogether nauseated.

For our enjoyment, these horses are forced to basically put their lives on the line.

This is what? 3 horses in 3 years? I know this happens much more then we hear about it, unless you follow horse racing, but is it time to examine how "necessary" this "sport" is? And I know....money fuels horse racing, and as long as the money flows, the horses will run.

Just sad.

I think its much tougher for those of us who are/have been around horses in their life. They're the most beautiful creatures with complex personalities and just lovely to be around for the most part.

For one horse to die for no reason just hits me hard deep inside.

Kind of like pitbull fighting, but for rich white people.

this "sport" has no business existing in this period of time.

Back in the days when there was an equal chance of a human suffering a life-altering injury in a sporting event as there was a horse in horse racing. This century and the bulk of the last don't/didn't need the sport.

Yeah, it's just a culture thing that people usually don't want to admit how bias are inherited.

Some cultures don't like the idea of eating dogs, and some cultures don't like the idea of eating cows.

Two broken ankles? I've got a hunch the autopsy will reveal drug use of some sort. The ridiculous aspect of this sport is that the punishment for killing a horse is virtually null.

Go out to a local track someday - I think you'll be surprised by the wide variety of people that are there. It's certainly not just for rich white people.

As for the filly, medication is certainly an issue, but it's probably not the main one. Here's what I posted over on FOFC:

I read an interesting article a year ago or so that put forth the theory that another contributing factor was the money involved in the breeding industry now. Since fast horses are worth so much at stud, they're often retired after very few races. Where in the past a good horse would race through his 5 year old season (at least) and the most durable horses would be the ones to make the most money since they'd be able to run consistent races more often - now horses horses are retired so early that durability rarely enters into the equation and the ones with problems aren't weeded out f the breeding pool.

I don't think the point is about if only rich white people are fans.

The point is more about since rich white people are part of the fan group.

It's always OK to be engaged in activities rich white people are approve of, like hunting and horse racing. If rich white people are dog fighting fans, it would have been OK for latinos and blacks to enjoy dog fighting too.

People can't eat dogs because rich white people hate that. However, people can eat cows, regardless of how some brown people consider that a bad thing.

Horse racing still has one of the highest injury/fatality rates of any sport on earth.

The horses are also treated extremly well and if you do any sort of research into the sport on the psychology of horses you will find that they enjoy running and have a sense of competition.

How do they feel about breaking both ankles and being shot on the spot?

Just sad. I don't think you end the sport because of it, that's just silly IMO. But that there are many who act like "it's just a horse" is far, far more ridiculous.

It's a shame.

Quite possibly to most blatant stretch at manufactured bias I've ever seen. Well done.
