Appeal plays
I thought these were pretty rare, but yesterday I saw two in two games, so I'm now thinking they are much more common but as they're mostly turned down they are usually just glossed over by the announcers and not mentioned. Does anyone know how often they occur?

Quite a bit. Catchers often appeal to the first base ump to see if a batter swung at a pitch or something like that. Thats the most common one I see.

The catcher cannot appeal to the first base umpire. He has to ask the home plate umpire to do it. You see him point, but if the homeplate umpire doesn't ask then nothing is done.
