The biggest part of being a manager,IMO, is motivation. Johnson could handle the egos well which I think was a bug part of Torre's success.

I don't think so. Donnie made it abundantly clear after last year he held no ill feelings towards the Yankees and hoped doors could remain open in the future, which they were. The Yankees invited him back for the last game last year and he's done things for The Yes Network since then.

Never once, with all the press about the book, did I hear Mattingly's name brought up with Torre's and tying the two together that way.

Donnie would have no ego's in his locker room either. I think he would be alot like Torre in that aspect.

I think the thing about Johnson is that he is considered past his prime and is not much of a strategist. Ken Rosenthal really blasts him in this recent article about how he managed Team USA in the WBC:

Quote:
Actually, as poorly as Davey Johnson managed, the people at USA Baseball who appointed him should be even more embarrassed.

Johnson was once a great manager, a master handler of bullpens, the cocksure leader of the 1986 Mets. But he's 66 now, and his best days were behind him when the Dodgers fired him in 2000.

FOX Sports on MSN - MLB - Team USA ill-served by Johnson

And this story is from the LA Times just before he was fired by the Dodgers:

Quote:
Dodger officials were upset because they believe Johnson should have managed more efficiently in late-inning situations, sacrificing to advance runners.

But that's not Johnson's style.

Although Johnson is under fire for his strategy and didn't improve his position during the previous two series, he said he doesn't plan to change at this point.

He will stick with what helped him become baseball's winningest active manager no matter what others think.

"All of a sudden to reinvent the wheel isn't going to win any more ballgames," Johnson said. "Maybe in somebody else's mind it will, but not in my mind."

Chairman Bob Daly and General Manager Kevin Malone have encouraged Johnson to manage more aggressively.

They want to see the Dodgers do more of the "little things," though Johnson said the team wasn't built to do that.

Johnson relies on home runs and execution, trusting veteran players to perform in key situations.

If this is typical opinion of Johnson these days, I would say Pena and Mattingly would have nothing to worry about as far as he is concerned.

Ken Rosenthal is the Colin Cowherd of print. He says things just to get a reaction sometimes. And if he was criticized for not bunting enough... I agree though that Mattingly would be an excellent choice.

Pena was one of the three interviewed for the job (with Girardi and Mattingly). He was considered the odd man out as no one expected him to get the job over the other two.

However, sources said that the Yankees were extremely impressed with his interview. It was one of the reasons the Yankees and Girardi asked him if he stay as bench coach. And Pena, being the great guy he is, said yes.

When it comes to Mattingly, I think it depends on where he feels wanted. I bet if Torre can convince Dodger management to have Mattingly be his successor, Donny will stay in LA. If that happens, I'd be surprised if the Yankees don't give Pena another serious look.

Stealing home has to be up there with triple and grand slam as the most exciting plays in baseball. Why, dammit, did it have to be against the Yankees?

Don't fool yourself, if Mattingly was given the chance to manage the Yankees now he would jump at it.

Haven't they made it that getting a triple is even harder than before as it doesn't count if there is an error or fielders choice. Having said that, I do believe that Ortiz has actually legged out a triple this season

You're welcome. Speaking of welcome, how about you returning the favor and making Phil Hughes' debut tonight a pleasurable one?

LOL. That could be a confidence builder, indeed!

What, did the ball get stuck under the tarp or go down a drain hole?
