I think we need a new thread for Pat Venditte and his switch-pitching. He hasn't pitched yet, since Charleston got spanked yesterday, but oh well...

Unlike a lot of people I think he has an outside chance at getting to the majors.

By the way, as long as he is playing baseball and it doesn't exist, I will campaign for switch pitching in OOTP...

Lol, there are various users who would explode if those 2 players were in OOTP.

I've edited the title to spell pitcher correctly.

Is Venditte doing anything against the rules? If not, then by the hammer of god, there is no grounds for complaint if the game allowed switch pitching.

Obviously the Japanese example is different, because firstly it's Japanese baseball, and not real baseball, and she's female, and females have no place in real baseball.

Who knows what would happen if a scout found a dwarf hobbit in Ghana who could switch-pitch and use a submarine, side-arm and over-arm delivery?

what if the switch pitcher was against the switch hitter. How long could they go back and forth switching?

There's a video somewhere of what happened in Venditte's pro debut.

The rule now is that the pitcher has to "Visually indicate to the batter umpire and any runners which arm he intends to pitch with". So the pitcher chooses first. After at least one pitch both the batter and pitcher can switch once.

Some time ago, there was a boy on the Mexican team in the Little League World Series that switch pitched I believe. Does anyone no of other examples? Frankly, this fellow is only the second reference to it that I have ever seen.

I also seem to recall Mizuno coming out with a switch glove - in the eighties maybe? I'd imagine that there was a reason other than 'because' for doing so.

From what I've read, there were a handful of switch pitchers in the 19th century. As many here will know, Greg Harris threw left handed once.

Switch pitching is a useful skill, but difficult to learn. I do think more people should try though...

I was not aware of the 19th century instances - is there a link anyone has to something on that? Interesting topic.

Larry Corcoran in the 19th century switched pitched because of an injury.

It's interesting to note that he was one of the first pitchers to use signals with his catcher.

Ball three is low and outside.

It was mentioned in the facebook group for Venditte. I'm not sure where they came from.

Tony Mullane was one of the names mentioned.

My catcher (later moved to OF) in high school could throw with both arms. But he wasnt really much of a pitcher. (though he did pitch on occasion in Pony League, always righthanded)

Tony Mullane is the most famous. But, it seems there is only evidence that he did it in the same game 3 separate times. (but given 19th century records that doesnt mean that he didnt more)

Icebox Chamberlain was the other one in the 19th century he did in 2 games.
