World Cup 2010

Today rounded up the main WC qualifying. Courtesy of soccernet.com, the following nations have qualified.

UEFA REGION

Denmark: A 1-0 win over rivals Sweden gave the Danes top spot and they only lost once in a group they were not expected to win.

England
: A defeat to Ukraine aside, Fabio Capello's side were consistently impressive as they won 9 out of their 10 games and bagged the most goals too.

Germany
: With two wins over rivals Russia, the Germans sealed their place with some gritty performances and some dominant home form.

Italy
: Not the most convincing in terms of form, the World Champions struggled away from home, came back from two goals down against Cyprus, and still topped the group.

Netherlands
: Wrapping up qualification early with a 100% record, the Dutch hardly broke sweat and conceded just two goals on their way to the finals.

Serbia
: A shock group winner after holding off France, a 5-0 hammering of Romania showed the world that they are a serious proposition.

Spain
: Arguably the best side in the competition, a classy display saw them maintain a 100% record and not concede a single goal at home.

Slovakia
: Despite losing to rivals Slovenia in the penultimate game, they picked up a win over Poland to seal their place at the top of the group and book their place at their first international competition.

Switzerland
: With a point enough on the final day, the Swiss lost only once - to minnows Luxembourg - during the qualifiers to pip Greece to the post.

CONMEBOL

Brazil: Favourites in the group, Dunga's men made sure of qualification without dominating and struggled slightly away from home.

Paraguay
: Winning seven of their eight home games, Paraguay surprised many by easing through the qualifiers with wins over Brazil and Argentina.

Chile
: Getting to a World Cup for the first time since France '98, their away form saw them score 18 goals and seal their place.

Argentina
: After making a meal of qualifying, including a horrible final run, Maradona's men made it by beating Uruguay away in the last game. More will be expected in South Africa.

CONCACAF

Mexico: A perfect home record and no real surprises in a group they were always going to find easy.

United States
: Managing to beat Honduras on the road, the U.S. also cruised through by virtue of an impressive home record.

Honduras
: In the most dramatic of conclusions on the final day, Honduras beat El Salvador 1-0 but only qualified when the U.S. equalised against Costa Rica with 20 seconds remaining.

CAF

Ghana: Dominant home form from the Black Stars kept them at the top of each of their groups, and they have been tipped to end a 28-year wait for the African Nations Cup title before South Africa.

Ivory Coast
: A commanding qualification from the Elephants, as they did not lose a game in either group stage on their way to the finals.

ASIA

Australia
: Hammering all before them at home, they managed just two goals on the road, but qualified with ease.

Japan
: Finishing as runners-up behind the Socceroos, Japan's excellent early away form pushed them above Bahrain.

South Korea
: Looking to emulate their successes of 2002, they topped both their groups without losing a game and netted 22 goals in the process too.

Korea DPR
: Getting through for the first time since 1966, when they famously beat Italy, Korea DPR finished as runners-up behind their southern rivals as they had a better goal difference than Saudi Arabia.

The following nations may qualify through playoff:

PLAY-OFFS: France, Portugal, Greece, Slovenia.

PLAY-OFFS: Uruguay

TBD (Nov. 14): Algeria, Cameroon, Nigeria.

INTERCONTINENTAL PLAY-OFF: TBD (Nov. 14): New Zealand

Thus far, it looks like we are in for a very exciting World Cup.

If Argentina gets one of the 8 top seeds, it will be a joke. My top 8:

Brazil
Germany
Italy
England

ESPN secures archive World Cup footage

Broadcasting - News - ESPN secures archive World Cup footage - Digital Spy

Quote:
ESPN has agreed a new multi-channel deal with FIFA to broadcast archive matches and programming from over 70 years of World Cup Finals.

Under the multi-year deal, ESPN and ESPN Classic will screen footage from the first World Cup tournament in 1930 right up to the most recent event in 2006.

From today, the channels will screen 150 classic matches, along with 14 official FIFA films dating from 1930 to 2002. Both channels will also carry the hour-long Top 20 FIFA World Cup Moments programme and the FIFA World Cup Stories six-episode series.

Martin Tyler named lead announcer by ESPN. I wish the execs responsible for all the great soccer moves would take over the rest of the network.

I love when this comes around every 4 years. This is my favorite sporting event.

Is Argentina not so good anymore? They have always been entertaining to watch. I always look forward to them, UK, germany, and a few others. Especially England. They always come out on fire. Then by the time they get through the group round and maybe one more, they are always 1 or 2 men short

Argentina's got plenty of talent, but the domestic league is an absolute mess (they delayed the start of the season because the individual clubs couldn't afford to pay their players) and they appointed Diego Maradona as the national team's manager. He might have been the greatest player in the world, but he's got nothing going on upstairs anymore. They just barely squeaked through qualifying.

They beat Brazil and Argentina and finished ahead of Argentina. Is there a better candidate?

Chile finished ahead of Paraguay (only on goal differential, but still), places higher in the FIFA rankings, and has better players and a better manager (Bielsa's the guy who should really be in charge of the Argentinian national team). Denmark and Serbia also look really good, as does Ghana. Cameroon would also be a team I'd put ahead of Paraguay if they can clinch their spot. I'd put Paraguay somewhere around the level of the US and Mexico, honestly.

Serbia had a bad loss to end qualifying. I do like Denmark and the African teams. I had to pick someone. I cant wait for Dec 4 and the draw. I wish we could sim life forward to June.
