Then he is a complete and utter idiot and should be suspended for life. If he doesn't know the rules of his game - and more specifically, some of hte only plays that he plays on, he shouldn't be playing that sport.

Not saying he shouldnt know the rules but you are being naive if you think players know all the rules. Even coaches dont know them all or else they wouldnt make some challenges.

It was punt coverage and he was unaware of where the ball was, it's a 15-yard penalty for kick catch interference, that's it. It's football. The players who came on the field after the play should be disciplined, like TB#54 who randomly started shoving Panthers players.

He leapt with the specific intent of hitting him as high as possible. His intent was to harm, not make a football play.

I don't think his intent was to harm, I think it was to make a good solid special teams play. Did that Chiefs lineman intend to tear up Brady's knee last season, no he was trying to make a solid play on defense. You see it one way, I see it another. We can debate this until we're blue in the face, but football is a violent game and people will (do) get hurt.

I chose 3 games, but primarily due to that returner being on my fantasy team.
If he wasn't, I'd lean towards 1-2 games.

The two plays aren't even remotely similar. One was an unfortunate result to a football play, the other was intentional thuggery.

No intent to harm...I might be able to buy that.
Good special teams play? No way. There is a rule (one in which a Special teams guy taht is the gunner should know...just like a QB would know they can't throw it when passed the line of scrimmage), that is to protect the safety of these prone guys. This guy, should not be playing the game if he is running willy nilly to make a "good special teams play". Isn't there a rule (or is it only college) that says a player has to stop their forward momentum when waiting for the ball to come down?

for those saying it wasn't that big a deal and he shouldn't be suspended, you really need to see the replay. smith called a fair catch and wesley just slammed into him at full speed, lunging into his upper body, aiming for his head, no intent to slow down or avoid the hit.
any special teamer knows you cant touch the return before he gets the ball, especially not if he has called a fair catch. im sorry but he needs FAR more than a 1 game suspension. the fact that wesley didn't realize he did something wrong and was acting like he was correct in what he did shows the panthers ST caoch either isn't doing his job or wesley doesn't belong in the league |

I tried to see a fair catch signal...but couldn't. If there was he called it way ahead of when Wesley would have been able to see it since he had two blockers to get past.
I agree the ball wasn't there yet and the call on the field was correct. But you also have to remember, Wesley was flying down there at full speed and it looked like he was barely ahead of the blockers. EVerything was so fast. Its hard to say it was blatant premeditated aggression. |

The only reason I don't agree is that Wesley lowered his shoulder as he hit Smith. If he'd wrapped him up in an ordinary tackle, I for one would feel a lot more forgiving about it. There was no reason to bring Smith down in the manner that Wesley did.

As for going for his head i have to question what video you guys are watching. Nowhere did he bring his arm up to hit Smith in the head. I dont think he was trying to hit Smith helmet to helmet. He just lowered his arm & shoulder into Smith's chest. An illegal hit yes. Dirty nah. If thats dirty then a lot of past players should be in prison for assault. |

I don't think that's relevant. The rules have been tightening up a lot throughout the years. What's normal could be considered dirty now.
