Lincecum busted for pot

San Francisco Giants ace Tim Lincecum cited for marijuana possession - ESPN

Keep it in your house, and then there is no problem. Don't know why you would risk speeding with a pipe and weed in your center console though.

Will this subject him to increased scrutiny from MLB with regards to drug testing?

Oh, and if you're surprised by this you were probably also surprised to learn A-Rod did roids.

I thought weed was more or less legal in California?
There are more marijuana clubs in California now than in Starbucks.

And why should marijuana even be groups with PEDs? If anything marijuana is a performance depressing drug.

No, no there isn't, and it shouldn't be.

He was arrested in Washington state so California's laws are irrelevant anyway. Under 40 grams in Washington might as well be legal, it's just a minor misdemeanor carrying only a fine. In this case he's getting hit with a $622 fine, but when he goes to court, it'll probably be reduced and possibly dropped. In the end, there's a chance he pays more for driving 74 in a 60. Not a big deal at all.

And really, are you surprised?

I think the ticket is mostly for the marijuana. That one is $250~$1000 fine for under 40 grams, and the traffic ticket shouldn't be that expensive unless it's in construction zone.

Yeah, that's what I thought.

Yeah, that's what I thought.
It's actually very likely.

According to this article, there are around 800 cannabis clubs in Los Angeles.

http://www.nytimes.com/2009/10/20/us/20clinic.html

That's way more than the number of Starbucks in Los Angeles. It's hard to pin down the total number of Starbucks though, if you want to count licensed stores, like those in Targets or grocery chains.

It's the similar situation in San Francisco:

Ed Rosenthal: SF GATE: More Medical Marijuana Dispensaries than Starbucks in San Francisco

Please note that the San Francisco number is from months ago. There are probably even fewer Starbucks and even more cannabis clubs now.

But of course, both San Francisco and Los Angeles cannabis club numbers include estimates of illegal ones. So it's hard to pin down the real situation.

Those are government numbers nonetheless. Not some crazy out of thin air numbers.

The cited fine was strictly for the possession of weed and the pipe, it didn't include the price of the speeding ticket.

To update what I said previously, his plea agreement would drop the drug possession charge and hold the drug paraphernalia charge, a $250 fine. It awaits approval from a judge, but pretty standard for a cooperative first time offender. He also has to pay $122 for speeding.

Maybe I read a difference source. Most articles I read said that includes fines for both possession and speeding. I would guess it was $250 for marijuana, $250 for drug paraphernalia, and $122 for speeding.

Yeah, that's what I thought.
Bill Maher mentioned it on his show last month quoting out of a newspaper.
Here is a blog article from the SF chronicle. I would have to think that this trend holds true across the state.

City Insider : Marijuana hotspots vs. Starbucks -- who wins?

That is from last Nov
The article Maher quoted is probably much more recent.

Marijuana is de-facto legal in California now. California continues to lead the US is terms of progressive legislation.

But a lot of that is largely moot since I did not bother to read the article and all of this happened in the state of Washington.
However what I said is true about cannabis clubs vs Starbucks

My money is on your thinking being wrong. There are cities and towns that have no dispensaries. Bakersfield for example because the Sheriff ran all the dispensaries out of town after his son was arrested for possession.

Bakersfield is also a small city with less than a dozen Starbucks. If the Los Angeles numbers are true, then there is a 500~600 surplus of cannabis clubs just in Los Angeles alone. That's enough to make up the deficit for 50 Bakersfield already.

Or we can look at it this way. Some court data I found on the net showing there were 1400 Starbucks in California in 2006.

According to the city, there are about 800 cannabis clubs in Los Angeles right now.

It really shouldn't be hard for the total number of cannabis clubs to be more than Starbucks.

But of course, 1400 didn't include the licensed ones.
