That would be cool, I'd love to see him pitch. He's a bit old for being that low in the minor league system, but I'll be rooting for him

*sigh* A-Rod fouled a ball off his foot yesterday, Tex got nailed in the elbow on Tues, Cervelli has a strained hamstring from Wed's game I think and the list goes on. This week has been the week of bumps and bruises. Not exactly what I want to see right before the season starts in Boston.

Let's talk about the opposition. USA Today predicts the AL East:
1. New York Yankees 2. Boston Red Sox 3. Tampa Bay Rays 4. Baltimore Orioles 5. Toronto Blue Jays Their writeups: Orioles: Brian Matusz is the best young pitcher I’ve seen in Florida this spring. . . . Kevin Millwood will be good for the pitching staff. He’ll help those kids a lot. But he won’t repeat last year’s stats (13-10, 3.67 ERA) based on who he’s facing in the AL East. And they should move Jeremy Guthrie all the way to the back of the rotation. . . . I’m impressed by how hard Miguel Tejada is working at third base. . . . They need Brian Roberts (slowed by back injury) back. You can’t have Ty Wigginton as your everyday second baseman. Red Sox: Boston has a pretty awesome rotation. And as usual, Tim Wakefield is a valuable commodity. . . . Jon Lester is the real ace of this staff. . . . They have to figure out who’s going to get the ball to Daniel Bard and Jonathan Papelbon, but they have plenty of options. . . . Dustin Pedroia and Kevin Youkilis are going to have to do a lot more than in previous years. Yankees: The infield might be the best all time in baseball. . . . If there can be an underrated player on the Yankees, it’s Robinson Cano. . . . I would make Sergio Mitre the fifth starter. Phil Hughes and Joba Chamberlain in front of Mariano Rivera would be lights out. . . . It’s hard to imagine an outfield (Brett Gardner, Curtis Granderson and Nick Swisher) this weak on a team with a $200 million payroll. . . . And who’s going to catch with Jorge Posada probably needing to catch even less this year? Rays: Tampa Bay’s front-line guys — B.J. Upton, Evan Longoria, Carlos Pena, Carl Crawford, Jason Bartlett — are outstanding, but this team must decide who’s in right field. . . . Sean Rodriguez has been hitting fastballs all spring, but he’s still swinging and missing at a lot of breaking balls. . . . Pat Burrell looks old and maybe done. . . . Kelly Shoppach is the perfect catcher for this rotation. Their stuff is as good as anybody’s in the game, and Shoppach can run the game for them. . . . They have gaps in the bullpen. It’s a fire drill once you get to the sixth and seventh inning. Blue Jays: Toronto has lost too much
starting pitching to not end up with a bullpen in turmoil . . . I like Brian Tallett, Scott Downs and Jason Frasor, but if they have to keep Tallett in the rotation, that’s going to add to the wear on the bullpen. . . . Kevin Gregg is pitching tentatively. . . . They’re better off with Jose Bautista at third base. That way Edwin Encarnacion isn’t throwing the ball into the seats. |

Actually, those were "capsules." Further down the page, which I saved, are the team writeups. I'll post one every day or two. Discuss at will.
NEW YORK YANKEES Where they are strong: There are plenty of choices, but the most remarkable collection is the infield. First baseman Mark Teixeira tied for the league lead with 39 homers last season. Shortstop Derek Jeter and second baseman Robinson Cano became the first doubleplay combination to both have at least 200 hits in the same season. Third baseman Alex Rodriguez drove in 100 runs despite missing the first month. And the foursome’s totals for 2009: 112 home runs, 373 RBI, .310 average. Where they are weak: The outfield could be unusually unproductive for such a quality team. The only returning starter is right fielder Nick Swisher, who hit .249, 25 points lower than any other 2009 Yankees starter. He has company now, because that’s what Curtis Granderson hit for the Detroit Tigers. Granderson and 2009 Yankees backup Brett Gardner probably will share left and center, but manager Joe Girardi hasn’t determined who will be where. The numbers say: Turn off the Yankees’ power and you can beat them. They barely win one in three games when they don’t hit a home run, going 12-23 in 2009. That means they were 91- 36 when they knocked the ball out of the park. Of course, the new Yankee Stadium produced 237 homers last year, most in the majors, and didn’t have a homerless game until June 18. Victory looks like: Staying healthy and not showing the age that is creeping up on key players. The Yankees have paid well to collect talent, and general manager Brian Cashman says they’ve created more payroll flexibility than usual so they can fill needs during the season if necessary. Says Cashman, “I’ve got to Aug. 31 (the postseason-roster deadline), when all the phones are put down, when all the pens are put down, to put together the best team.” |

Interesting article on ESPN New York, I didn't realize these two had been like this. I remember a couple of seasons ago A-Rod was on Mike & the Mad Dog and said everything was OK.
ESPN New York - MLB - A-Rod and Derek Jeter are on the same page for the New York Yankees - ESPN New York |

Well, with the Yanks' loss Girardi is now on the hot seat and the Yankees are going to try to get Jake Peavy, Heath Bell, K-Rod and Brian Fuentes to make sure they never lose again.

Yeah, I was thinking the same thing. And the fidgeting was overboard. I kept thinking he was wishing he had a cheeseburger in front of him instead of the Red Sox hitters.
Them Chamberlain was just as bad with it. It looked like half of them (the bullpen) were on coke. |
