The Lowly Carolina Hurricanes
The 'canes have the worst record in hockey? What in the world?! Besides Ward getting injured, what's going on down there? I was expecting them to be one of the best in east if not the best and they're the worst in the entire league, even worse than the Leafs.
I wonder if Chappy here still works them.

I can't give you a complete breakdown of why, but basically everything is wrong. They are last in scoring, last in penalty minutes, and 29th in scoring defense. Their entire first line is hurt. Now Cam Ward is out for a month.
It is a mess. And it doesn't appear to have hit bottom yet.

If it makes you feel any better, the zamboni still has a Whalers sticker on it. Or at least last time I saw it, it did.

![]() I followed the Whalers from the WHL days on. My first memory of hockey was going to watch teams from Houston, Birmingham, Indianapolis and Cincinnati with Dad. What? They play hockey in Boston, Montreal and Detroit?!? It was a sad, sad period in Hartford when that liar bastard and bum bought the team, jerked us around and headed South with our Whalers. |

dont' forget the NHL awarding him a Stanley Cup for his troubles in his "newer, better, hockey market" (ya I have no proof, there we go.)
Back on topic (although Bettman baby bashing is quite fun), you know your team is absolutely horrible when even the Leafs are looking down at you. Probably be season over if they weren't in the *shiver* SouthEast division. |

This wave of sorrow coupled with intense hatred will subside until the next time that I am forced to think of he whose name shall not be mentioned. |

- Old, decrepit defense. They let the one talent they had back there (Babchuk) go to Russia. - The fascination with bringing back players whose ship has already sailed (Cullen, Aaron Ward, Cole) - Cole's injury issues. - Rod Brind'amour's roid shipments finally stopped? - The fact that the Southeast may actually be not half bad this year with improving teams in Atlanta and Tampa. That's a lot of "free wins" that went by the wayside. That's just off the top of my head. And yeah, no way have they hit bottom yet. |

Hey, just give the Leafs a chance to catch up, would ya? I'm sure they can take worst spot from Carolina.

I WANTED TO GO TO RONNIE FRANCIS' JERSEY RETIREMENT IN HARTFORD - THE REAL ONE, NOT THE FAKE ONE THEY TRUMPED UP AT A WOLFPACK GAME AFTER THE FREAKING CAROLINA FANS THAT DON"T EVEN KNOW WHAT ICE IS RAISED A STUPID RED AND BLACK JERSEY AT SOME GOD-FORSAKEN ARENA SOUTH OF THE MASON-DIXON LINE.

Didn't think Carolina would be a serious threat in the East this year but am very surprised at how terrible they are.
On a side note, I have a bet with a buddy on who wins the East. I get the two Pennsylvania teams and he gets the field. Nearly a quarter of the way into the season and I'm still feeling just fine about that bet. |

Yes the D blows. Mostly b/c they (Rutherford) sadled themselves with Wallin with a NTC for the last 3 years and couldn't give him away. Pitkanen is extremely overrated and a complete liability. Alberts never has been very good, big hits fairly well but sucks. Gleason needs to learn how to be tougher and make a pass. I am fine with Corvo and Ward but I will agree Ward might be too old but also has to deal with being with Pitkanen on a nightly basis which means a ton of odd man rushes... One thing I will agree 100% is that Jimmy brings back TOO many old Canes and likes to re-sign his own guys WAY too much. However I have no problem with Cullen, he fights and gives MUCH more then most all the players on the roster even those who are only 20. Guy's mention Cole and before he got hurt he was among one of the better power forwards in the league. He scored in all 3 avenues of the game (SH,PP, ES) and he was a killer hitter. He's just a shell of his former self. HE gave them a shot in the arm when he came here last year but sucked in the POs (I would 100% rather have O'sullivan then traded him for Cole). Injuries are hurting them more too. They rely a bit too much on Staal, and hes hurt and was before he missed games, Rod is playing hurt and so is Walker. Just a mess really... Bottom line? It's Not Karmanos' fault its only partly Mo's fault (even tho I disagree with his hiring too), but the fault lies with Rutherford 100%. Sure, he's done some amazing things in the past and pulls off some monster trades (at times), but he made glaring mistakes this summer. He resigned too many of the RFA's, and now the team is full of role players. Which is great to have but you cannot take too many role players and expect them to step up and do things they cannot. Rutuu and Jokinen were fine enough last year in PO's but they aren't going to give you more then 20 each and help in SO and some hitting. You cannot rely on them as much as the Canes do. He also signed the same type of player from FA. Kostopolous and Yelle??? Did they need MORE defensive 1st forwards? I think not. They need(ed) to get a scorer. I know they don't grow on trees but they could have signed a guy who is a PP specialist and not much of a defender. They need someone who can put it in the rice on the PP. Babchuk wasn't going to help anyone, he has an attitude problem and is WAY too much of a pus# for his size. He simply cannot and will not hit guys and for a player his size it's a must. They tried to sign him last year to what he was making but he didn't want it and then that was pretty much it for him with his history with the team they didn't want to be bothered. I think/hope they win some but, more I would rather see a # 1 overall in their future this year to get something exciting on their roster coupled with Boychuk and Sutter. |
