I could get behind homeplate tickets for every home game for about 9,000 years making that much money.

I hope he can feed his family with this much money.

Aren't you a Twins fan?

I guess he could've gone to play for the Yanks.

Yeah...but that doesn't mean I can think it's ridiculous how much money athletes make.

More or less ridiculous than how much actors or investment bankers make?

Apples and oranges, IMO.

Actors get paid a salary by a studio that makes its money from direct product sales; theater tix. DVD's, cable, etc.

Investment bankers get a salary and bonus dependent on performance directly from their company.

Athletes, and clubs, make much of their income from media revenue. Now, a company like ESPN makes money from charging everyone who watches cable or satelite about $5 a month, whether they watch the channel or not. Then ESPN sells commercial time. Companies buy this time and pass the costs on to its customers..again whether they are sports fans or not. Players and teams receive involuntary public subsidy.

Studios pay actors from money received from other movies also. I don't know anyone who likes Nicholas Cage movies, but he still gets paid.

Baseball is a multi-billion dollar a year industry. Who should keep the money? The owners? I have no problem with the salaries these guys make. They generate the revenue, they get the money.

Honestly, I think it's good for Mauer, good for the Twins, and I'm glad that he won't wind up playing for the AL East superpowers.

As a White Sox fan, well, I think you can all probably guess how I feel.

But you dont have to pay to watch all the movies when you only see one. Sports gets lots of revenue from this unfair pricing scheme.

Already have, moving to a new stadium and all.

If this is as simple as pass the cost, then I should be able to make big money by just creating a channel, charging big money, and then simply asking the cable companies to pass the cost to the public for involuntary subsidy.

To believe that's how things work is just silly.

Thats how it does work. ESPN has the Disney muscle to force it down the cable companies throat.

And they can do it because this is what the consumers want. You don't see Disney forcing any other channel on the cable companies in the same way, not with the same kind of bill.

And it's not just ESPN. Fox Sports Net, with obviously much worse programming than ESPN, is the 2nd most expensive basic channel right behind ESPN.

It's just a fact that sports channels are very very important for cable companies, because consumers want them way more than anything else.
