The Official 2011/12 NHL Thread

It's tough not watching any hockey for a while, but I always look forward to Free Agent Frenzy. The draft is first though and the last minute wheeling and dealing is a lot of fun. Already been some moves in:

To CBJ
Jeff Carter

To PHI
Jakub Vorecek
2011 8th Overall Pick
2011 68th Overall Pick

-----

To LAK
Mike Richards

To PHI
Bradon Schenn
Wayne Simmonds
201? Second Round Pick

Paul Holmgren must have a big man-crush on Bryzgalov to go to these lengths in order to sign him, but at least the Carter deal is great for both teams. Surely he could have dumped some of the lesser guys though. They need to get some youth in there but the captain and a 30+ goalscorer? Or maybe the rumours are true and Pronger just hates them. Or his wife hates them. They're not from Edmonton are they?

I feel a little bad for Carter though. He signs a lifetime deal in the one place he wants to stay and gets shipped off just weeks before the contract kicks in. On the bright side he has a ton of co-eds to invite to his parties now.

Any thoughts on the draft? Any standout players you guys are hoping your teams pick up?

I'm a Pens fan and I feel like writing Philly mgmt a letter thanking them.

Why do you trade your C and A, in order to sign a goalie in Bryzgalov who is 31 years old to a 9 year deal? When your 22 year old goalie was just as good in 2010-2011?

Doesn't make sense at all.

Bryzgalov for 9 years = fail

MG was the NHL Draft on tv over here last year ? And more importantly is it on this year ? I think I'll make a bit more time for hockey this year.

I think it has been on ESPN America for the past several years, and it is on tomorrow at 14:00. The NHL Awards from this past week is also on at 12:30.

Seeing as the CBA expires in September, perhaps we should wait and see if there'll actually be a season first, given what's going on in the NBA and NFL.

That's next year. The player's association took the option for another season. I don't see many problems then anyway.

They all need to grow up, if they did it over here there'd be heads on spikes.

Ah, I missed that. I was wondering why things were quiet on the labour front.

Besides, they will be fine when it comes time to negotiate. The players and owners both know they cannot afford a lockout/strike for even 1 day in the NHL

To TOR
John-Michael Liles

To COL
2012 2nd Round Pick

I like this one for Toronto but I'm wondering what the Av's have planned now to let him go cheaper than I would have expected.

Maybe so. But sometimes stupid things end up happening anyway.

Nice amount of action at this year's draft. Setoguchi gets moved three days after signing an extension; Chicago gets some more cap room; the Sens make a gamble on Filatov; Regher going to the Sabres may mean a an official rebuild in Calgary.

Today is like Christmas for me. I love the first day of Free Agent Frenzy. Any thoughts on where Richards will end up? Kaberle? Vokoun?

In the past couple of days there were some trade and sign deals done. Wizniewski ends up in Columbus (good offseason for them so far), and Ehrhoff in Buffalo. Both getting six and ten year deals respectively. Jagr should be returning to the NHL but not with Pittsburgh who are lowballing him. Habs and Wings are still in the hunt there.

It's not just the UFAs today of course but restricted free agents. There could well be offer sheets thrown around but I seriously doubt the Lightning won't match any offer sheet Stamkos likes.

Matthieu Garon wins the 2011 race to sign first. 2 years at $1.3M per in Tampa Bay.
Jamal Mayers in Chicago for one season: $550K. They've made some odd moves this Summer.
Ben Eager is an Oiler. 3 years, $3.3M over that time.
Theodore has another new team, the Florida Panthers.

Also, Detroit has given up on Jagr.

Jovanovski goes full circle by returning to the Panthers, his first NHL team, for four years and $16.5M. Still not at the floor even with Marcel Goc's $1.7M/3 year deal.
Andrew Brunette moves to Chicago for the year at only $2M. That's a good deal.
