Jamie Moyer gets spring training invite at the age of 49

Jamie Moyer agrees to minor league deal with Colorado Rockies - MLB - SI.com

Quote:
DENVER (AP) -- Jamie Moyer has agreed to terms on a minor league contract with an invite to the Colorado Rockies' spring training, pending a physical.

The 49-year-old lefty didn't play last season after undergoing Tommy John surgery on his throwing elbow.

Moyer has played 24 major league seasons, starting with the Chicago Cubs in 1986. He went 9-9 with a 4.84 ERA for Philadelphia in 2010.
Moyer is 267-204 with a 4.24 career ERA.
I'd like to see him play some more, and I think if anyone can it'll be Moyer.

Somehow I'm surprised this isn't the Mets.

They must still consider Moyer a "big name" player.

To this day, I'm surprised they haven't tried to get players like Jarrod Saltalamacchia, since he's a "big name" too. *rimshot*

Seems like he's done ok so far in ST:

Chicago White Sox vs. Colorado Rockies - Recap - March 11, 2012

Quote:
Jamie Moyer is less than a year away from being as old as the number on the back of his uniform, 50. Yet the crafty left-hander is back on the mound, trying to make a comeback after having Tommy John surgery.
Moyer is competing for a spot in Colorado's rotation and was solid in his second spring training outing. He allowed a run in three innings and a Rockies split squad beat the Chicago White 5-2 Sox on Sunday.
"I feel pretty healthy," Moyer said. "It's mind over matter. I want to play. I believe I can play."
John Danks , who is expected to be Chicago's opening day starter, struggled with his command, walking four and allowing three runs - one earned - in three innings.
Jason Giambi went 2 for 2 with a double and a walk for the Rockies.
Moyer tried out a cutter Sunday, throwing it twice. One cutter resulted in a ball. The other resulted in a base hit. He said he needs to build his endurance, and arm strength will help
him throw the cutter. Moyer missed all of last season after having elbow reconstruction surgery.
With a fastball in the low 80s, he has pitched 24 seasons in the majors.
Moyer struck out two and allowed three hits. He struck out A.J. Pierzynski in the third inning on a two-seam fastball after throwing him changeups.
"I've kind of looked at my whole career as a spring training invite," said Moyer, whose spring ERA is 1.80. "I've always approached spring training as I have something to prove."

Now the big question... if he were to play 2-3 more seasons and gets to 300 wins does he belong in the HOF?

If he stays healthy he might trouble Satchel Paige's record yet lol.

Yeah but Satchel only pitched 3 innings for a publicity thing. I doubt Moyer would come back at 59 just to beat him if he wasn't in condition to pitch effectively, because he probably feels Satchel deserves to have his name on the record.

Well yeah. I was mostly joking, but was more looking at it as he might pitch for 9 more years lol.
