Do pro athletes in the USA still get paid with checks?

Seems strange to me that in 2012 people would still be getting paid their wages with checks. I'd have thought almost everyone would get paid by direct deposit into their bank account.

Interesting question. I imagine either option's available to them. I did a Google search and per this thread on another forum (StraightDope: "How are pro athletes paid?") it seems at least some do get paid with checks.

Yeah, the only time I ever get a physical check anymore is when a relative sends me $ for my birthday or something.

I haven't seen a paycheck in 15 maybe 20+ years.

I'm curious, what difference do you think it makes?

Well down here in Australia it takes about three days for a cheque to clear after you deposit it while payment by EFT takes 24 hours at the most.

The US was about 10 years behind in electronic banking 2-4 years ago. Great strides have been made but I'd say about 30% maybe more of the people I know still write and receive cheques.

I still get cheques for my dividend payment for shares in the company I work for. No provision is available to me for EFT.

I imagine that if a player authorizes it, 10% of his net pay could be wired into his agent's account as well, thereby avoiding having to write another check.

I don't know about other sports but many Hockey agents also act as financial managers for their young clients. I've heard several players mention that they get an "allowance" (probably big bucks compared to what I make) and never see the paycheck or the deposit.

I have direct deposit with my current employer but i know with other employers i had to wait a few paychecks before my direct deposit would start.
Does the same thing happen to players? Do they receive payment directly from team or do teams pay the NFL and the NFL pays them?
