MLB Postseason 2014

Just thought it'd be nice to have one place to discuss the entire postseason.

So, A's and Royals... way to start the play-offs with a thriller! Stealing 3B while down one with one out in the bottom of the 9th! Wow! Gutsy call. No offense to A's fans, but I was really pulling for the Royals. That town hasn't seen a play-off win in a long time.

My predictions:
ALWC: KC over OAK
NLWC: PIT over SF
ALDS: DET over BAL
ALDS: LA over KC
NLDS: LA over STL
NLDS: WAS over PIT
ALCS: DET over LA
NLCS: WAS over LA
WS: DET over WAS

If we had to lose (and we always do in the postseason) I'd rather it have been to the Royals than any other team. Can't hate anyone on that team really. Even Jarrod Dyson and his jiggitty jiggitty at third base. Hey you're kind of an ass but my god, the Royals.

If the A's would have held on to win, would Ned Yost be employed today? That move bringing in Ventura didn't make much sense.

He was so fired if the A's won. Might still be, depending on what happens in the ALDS but that game might have saved his job.

from a biased perspective, would enjoy an '85 rematch of the I-70 series with STL/KC, but this year's Cards just aren't giving me that winning vibe; so from a realistic view, I'll go with a beltway series:

NLWC: PIT over SF
ALDS: LA over KC
ALDS: BAL over DET
NLDS: LA over STL
NLDS: WAS over PIT
ALCS: BAL over LA
NLCS: WAS over LA
WS: WAS over BAL

SF over PIT 8-0. And now the play-offs start in earnest.

That game was a microcosm of the Pirates 2014 season. Terrible starting pitching and an inability to hit lefthanders. Then parading a pile of middle relievers out there because Hurdle is saving Watson and Melancon for the next game, apparently. Of course, if the Pirates starting pitching had been as good as, say, the Phillies, they would have won around 5 more games and the division.

Well, there goes my hopes of a PIT-KC World Series . I'll be rooting for either BAL or KC from the AL and WAS from the NL. Basically, I'd like to see some fresh faces in the World Series.

Short of a no-hitter, Bumgarner was as dominant and as precise in his command as any pitcher I've seen this year. Very few teams could have done anything against such pitching.

He was completely on, and the Pirates didn't seem too interested in trying to work the count from the outset. While they aren't as good against lefties as they are against righties (which is weird when their best players are right handed) that was a pretty good example of a guy with his best stuff shutting down an elite offense. And a guy (Volquez) who had a decent string of starts against awful teams being exposed, although a 3.08 ERA in PNC Park in a league with a 3.6 ERA isn't exactly ace material to begin with. The Bucs biggest offseason priorities should be re-signing Martin (although they're going to get worse at catcher next year even if he stays), salary dumping some starters and bench players, and then going out and getting a couple aces. It's a huge disappointment that Huntington wasn't able to turn the Pirates depth on the bench and in the rotation into at least one solid ace at the trade deadline.

Ned is crazy. Maybe he's crazy like a fox, but maybe he's just crazy. The Ventura move proves it. (Has he never heard of Rick Ankiel?). That was so stupid. Inexcusable. Especially when you have Herrera, Davis, Holland, Frasor, and for that matter Finnegan down there (even though he'd be my last choice of the pen because he's a rookie...but he was nails in 10th, 11th). They've won despite Ned this year. And that ridiculous "play" where Butler was supposed to wander off first to distract Lester, who doesn't ever throw to first anyway, while Hosmer steals home? (That was the design, apparently). Nuts. Costly. Potentially crushing.

That said, this team plays like its hair is on fire. They make contact and run like maniacs.

And I'm not complaining!

Tonight may be tough one for Vargas.....

And Pittsburgh just had the misfortune of facing a pitcher having a night that he was going to win that game no matter what. Nearly unhittable.

I figured the Pirates would win that one. That'll teach me not to doubt SF, especially in even-numbered years.
