New York Mets 2015 Season Thread

Matt Harvey just pitched two perfect innings in his first spring outing, struck out three in just 23 (or so) pitches.

I'm all happy!

Regardless of our starting pitching, I can't see where this team should make the playoffs. Because we loaded up on guys approaching 40? Nah.

Edit: And Price smacks Daniel Murphy in the hand. Uh-oh.

The Mets making the playoffs would require a big jump forward from most of the young players while the older players at least tread water. It's not impossible, but I don't think it's probable either.

with the second best starting rotation in baseball.....the Mets will make the playoffs as a wild card team in 2015. you can bet your entire life savings on it. (although of course I won't be doing that.)

Lets go Mets
Lets go Mets
Lets go Mets. !!!

Saw the 3-1 win over the Braves yesterday, where Matt Bowman pitched two innings. I have never ever seen his name before, but I really liked what I saw.

Matthew Bowman Minor League Statistics & History | Baseball-Reference.com

Looks like the Mets' depth for starting pitchers is even deeper than just deep. I wonder why they didn't try to work Bartolo Colon (who is fun to see pitch, but certainly not the future of the team) into a deal for an actual shortstop or corner outfielder without wasting money on Cuddyer.

As it is now, they even have Dillon Gee sitting around just to hand every Met coming to the dugout a cup of Gatorade...

I might follow this thread, which is remarkable if you know where my baseball allegiance has always been. Revile and spurn me if you must.

That said, I will give my plaudits to Wright and Parnell for getting on Syndergaard's case the other day. Well done.

Of course the Mets are going to win it all this year. I've opted to 'root' for them on a trial basis, if they tank or Wilpon does something stupid, I will wash my hands of the Mets.

While I get the message (Don't eat when your team is playing out there), I don't get why this made the front page on MLB.com earlier this week.

Must be a very slow spring.

Yeah, don't eat when your team is playing.

I think one of the noteworthy things about this episode may have been it was the first time (that we know of because it was witnessed by a member of the media) that Wright showed proactive/assertive leadership as team captain rather than merely "leadership by example."

Thank the baseball gods I was on the road when Wheeler hit everybody in sight yesterday...

Can someone reasonably explain to me why MLB.tv doesn't show the televised games for more than one day in advance? I think they should know today which channels are going to televise games on - say - Thursday...

I don't know the answer to this, sorry. I am still trying to get my head around both the Mets and the Yankees being televised on the same local channel this season, WPIX channel 11. There's a lot of history that I will not bore you with, including a flip-flop of the teams between WPIX and WOR channel 9 which, if you lived in the NYC area, you would find remarkable. But both teams on the same channel? Even more mind-boggling.

I'm talking, of course, about the games that their own team networks leave aside from local broadcasting. Frankly, I am surprised that this is allowed (mandated?) anymore. Something like 20 games apiece for the season to be locally televised. Quaint. I hope it always stays that way even though my rabbit ear antennae are long, long gone.

And here we go.

Experiencing general 'discomfort,' Edgin undergoes MRI | MLB.com

That's our only southpaw that has a slim chance of not getting blown up every time he's called upon.

I can remember when WOR televised every Met game except for the west coast night games for free...

Heh, we are both showing our age.

By the way, did you see where Wilpon has already had a sit-down with Collins (and not including Alderson, who was given a contract extension recently) after a lop-sided exhibition loss the other day? That made back-page news in my local newspaper because Collins, I believe, does not have a contract extension beyond 2015 (the Mets hold the option for renewal in 2016).

Well, they got my neighbor, rookie Steven Matz, who's been looking good in camp but according to that article, Alderson will not even consider using him in the bullpen to start the season.

Two pieces of news on Matz:
  • At age 24, he's already had TJ surgery (four or five years ago), so that's out of the way!
  • Everbody and his friggin' brother has a Wikipedia article these days. No major league experience yet, mind you. Say, are you on Wikipedia?

Welcome. Although, I feel a bit funny greeting you thusly as my own interest in the Mets is still in its infancy. I've been meaning to follow them for a long time as my baseball interest (let's not talk about allegiance, which is another matter . . .) can encompass more than one team, I wager. The Mets may be exciting soon. Or maybe not; I hear tell of years of broken dreams and unfulfilled expectations . . .

Like Matt Harvey surrendering almost as many hits as he collected outs today?

I had no expectations for those Mets to begin with, and it doesn't get metter. I mean, better.
